Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market with your vegan, soy-free protein bars. Our analysis places this idea in the 'Swamp' category, meaning there are similar solutions out there, but none have really taken off. With 4 similar products already identified, competition is present. The engagement for similar products is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. This suggests it's going to be difficult to get traction. Given this landscape, it will be crucial to stand out significantly to succeed.

Recommendations

  1. Deeply research why existing protein bars haven't fully satisfied the market, particularly focusing on vegan, soy-free options. Understand the specific taste profiles, textures, and ingredient combinations that resonate with consumers in this niche. For example, you can look at the negative feedback from similar products, where users have explicitly mentioned chalky taste. This should be addressed as a core product requirement.
  2. Identify a very specific niche within the vegan protein bar market. Instead of targeting all vegans, consider focusing on athletes, people with specific dietary restrictions (beyond soy), or those seeking protein bars for a particular time of day (e.g., breakfast, post-workout). Focus on a smaller market to get your initial customers, and then expand from there.
  3. Explore creating tools or resources for existing protein bar brands or retailers, as opposed to directly competing with them. This could involve developing a flavor pairing guide, a protein calculator, or a co-marketing strategy. Offering valuable content can build trust and brand awareness, paving the way for potential future product launches or collaborations.
  4. Analyze adjacent problems in the health and wellness space. Perhaps there's a greater need for vegan, soy-free meal replacements, protein-enriched snacks, or dietary supplements. By shifting your focus to a related but less crowded area, you could increase your chances of success. Remember that you can use your specific formulation in all kind of different products, like powder or shakes.
  5. Prioritize a robust taste testing and feedback process during product development. Given the low engagement metrics, you really need to work to improve the taste. Don't be afraid to iterate on your recipe and solicit honest opinions from your target audience. Also, consider if the protein can be obtained from rice, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, quinoa, amaranth, or nutritional yeast to create a tasty and unique product.
  6. Develop a compelling brand story that goes beyond just the ingredients of your protein bars. Communicate the values that drive your company, your commitment to sustainability, and the benefits of your product. Also, make sure to be transparent about your ingredients, sourcing and manufacturing.

Questions

  1. What unique selling proposition (USP) can you offer that truly differentiates your vegan, soy-free protein bars from existing options in terms of taste, texture, ingredients, and target audience?
  2. How can you ensure transparency in your supply chain, ingredient sourcing, and manufacturing processes to build trust with health-conscious consumers?
  3. What specific strategies will you employ to generate buzz and engagement around your brand, considering the generally low engagement levels seen in similar product launches?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

The primary criticism is that the product is in an early testing phase, suggesting it's not fully polished. Users emphasize the need for ongoing user feedback to guide further development and improvements. The launch seems premature, highlighting the product's incompleteness and reliance on user input for future iterations.

Project to Sort/Filter Protein Bars

05 Aug 2023 Food & Drink

After showing my sideproject https://ff.bitlet.org/ (NYC restaurant menu search) to a friend, we decided to narrow down the scope and build something similar for protein bars that can be monetized with affiliate links. We always found ourselves looking at macros when buying protein bars, and that was not easy to sort/filter on online shipping website.Looking for feedback, thank you!

Users expressed dissatisfaction with the taste, describing it as 'chocolate flavored chalk.' Additionally, there was a question raised about the disclosure of affiliate links.

The product has been criticized for not listing the taste, with one user describing it as 'chocolate flavored chalk.' Additionally, there is a lack of affiliate link disclosure, which has been pointed out as a significant issue.
