Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Creating restaurant menu design software with an online platform positions you in a crowded space. We found 13 similar products, suggesting high competition. While a high number of similar products increases confidence in understanding the market, it also means it's harder to stand out. The average engagement for these products is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. This indicates that while the idea has been explored, it hasn't necessarily captured significant user attention or generated substantial buzz. Given this landscape, consider whether your solution offers a truly unique value proposition that differentiates it from existing options.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly research existing menu design solutions to understand their shortcomings. Analyze user reviews, identify unmet needs, and pinpoint areas where current offerings fall short. This will help you identify opportunities to differentiate your product and offer a more compelling solution. The similar product discussions highlight that many users expect convenience, easy menu updates, and visually appealing designs.
  2. Focus on a specific niche within the restaurant industry to cater to a clearly defined audience. For example, you could target small, independent restaurants, cafes, or food trucks. By specializing, you can tailor your features and marketing efforts to resonate with a particular group, making it easier to gain traction and build a loyal customer base.
  3. Instead of directly competing with existing menu design platforms, explore opportunities to provide tools or services that complement their offerings. For example, you could develop plugins or integrations that enhance the functionality of popular platforms, or offer specialized design services for restaurants using those platforms.
  4. Based on the user feedback from similar products, it's important to ensure your initial product has very clear instructions and a functional demo. The Google account login was a major point of contention for one of the reviewed products, so consider removing that hurdle in your own product.
  5. Before investing significant time and resources into development, validate your idea by creating a simple prototype or MVP and gathering feedback from potential users. This will help you identify any major flaws or areas for improvement, and ensure that your product meets the needs of your target audience. Use this feedback to rapidly iterate and refine your offering.

Questions

  1. What specific pain points of restaurant owners are you addressing with your menu design software that existing solutions aren't already solving effectively?
  2. How will you acquire your first customers and achieve sustainable growth in a competitive market with established players?
  3. How will you differentiate your platform beyond just drag-and-drop functionality to create a truly compelling and sticky user experience?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

I built a digital menu creator that uses AI

Hey HN,I built Leader Menu, which is a digital menu creator for restaurants (or any type of business owners really) who need to showcase what they offer in a digital way.It also has some AI features that allow you to just upload a picture of your menu and automatically digitalize it.Would love to receive some feedback!

Users have requested account-free or email-based access and a built-in working demo within the app. Additionally, a Leader Menu feature has been created for easy digital menu creation.

The main criticisms are that the product requires a Google account to use, which some users find inconvenient, and that it gives the impression of being hastily put together or lacking effort.

Digital Menus for Food Businesses

22 May 2024 Food & Drink

Hi community!I built a web application for small restaurants to manage their food menus digitally. It allows managers and owners to edit their menus and share them with customers via QR codes.A few months ago, I waited 10 minutes for a physical menu at a Korean restaurant. This experience seemed unproductive for both customers and businesses. Many local businesses either create their own static pages or lack digital menus altogether. I believed these businesses would benefit from an easy way to put their menus online.I'm happy to hear any thoughts!

Is the menu viewing functionality working?
