Idea type: Competitive Terrain

While there's clear interest in your idea, the market is saturated with similar offerings. To succeed, your product needs to stand out by offering something unique that competitors aren't providing. The challenge here isn’t whether there’s demand, but how you can capture attention and keep it.

Should You Build It?

Not before thinking deeply about differentiation.

Your are here

Your idea of creating a platform for quick community feedback on everyday decisions falls into a competitive space. There are already many tools that offer similar functionalities like polls and real-time feedback. The high number of similar products (n_matches=28) confirms this. This isn't necessarily bad news; it shows that there's demand for this kind of service. However, it also means you need to think very carefully about how your product will stand out to capture and retain user attention. Engagement for similar products is medium, which means people are looking for this type of solution, and your challenge is to provide a unique experience that addresses user feedback effectively. Think hard about how your platform will differentiate itself and carve out a niche in this crowded market.

Recommendations

  1. Begin with an in-depth competitive analysis, focusing on the shortcomings of existing platforms. Several similar products faced criticism around delayed response times, a lack of detailed feedback mechanisms (like comments and drawings), and the need for more nuanced opinion gathering. Identify what these platforms are missing and how you can directly address these pain points.
  2. Focus on a specific niche to differentiate yourself. For example, you could target designers seeking feedback on their work, or foodies deciding where to eat. Tailoring your platform to a specific audience allows you to better meet their needs and build a loyal user base. This focus will help you avoid becoming a generic feedback tool and offer more value to your users.
  3. Prioritize a seamless and intuitive user experience. From the similar product discussions, ease of use and a straightforward setup process were consistently praised. Ensure your platform is easy to navigate, quick to set up polls, and offers real-time feedback. Remove any friction points that could deter users from actively participating. Also, consider direct integration with other social apps.
  4. Incorporate detailed feedback mechanisms beyond simple polls. Users have expressed a desire for features like comments, drawings, and the ability to annotate images. This allows for more nuanced and in-depth opinions, providing more valuable insights for decision-making. Think about how you can implement these features in a user-friendly way to foster engagement.
  5. Develop a strong brand and marketing message that clearly communicates your unique value proposition. Given the competition, it's crucial to stand out with a compelling brand identity that resonates with your target audience. Highlight what makes your platform different and why users should choose it over the alternatives. In the TinyGiny example, the name was an issue, be thoughtful with your brand.
  6. Gather feedback early and iterate rapidly. Engage closely with your initial users to understand their needs and pain points. Use their feedback to continuously improve your platform and add new features that address their specific requirements. Building a loyal community of early adopters can help you refine your product and build momentum. Upp.Vote and Features.Vote are great examples to check out.
  7. Consider how you will moderate content and ensure data quality. One similar product Pollster received feedback that basic demographic information collection might be needed. Also, explore different incentive models to encourage participation and ensure data quality.

Questions

  1. Given the existing competitive landscape, what specific underserved need or user group will your platform cater to in order to carve out a sustainable niche?
  2. How will you balance simplicity and ease of use with the desire for more detailed and nuanced feedback mechanisms like comments, annotations, and drawings?
  3. What strategies will you employ to ensure high-quality participation and prevent potential misuse or manipulation of the feedback system, ensuring reliable and trustworthy results?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

I made a tool to instantly ask 100 real humans to pick between 2 images

Some weeks back I posted about the system that I developed to distribute small tasks or questions to tons of people very quickly. As a demonstration I have now built this simple website that lets you gather preferences between two images from at least 100 real people in just a few minutes (no AI! I get humans by integrating with a few apps for a little bit of monetization - e.g. like Duolingo). I built the system to help annotate data for AI, but I thought it would be cool to build a tool that anyone could use to get real human feedback - free, no signup! Feel free to use it however you like, e.g. to figure out which outfit to wear or which image to post on your social media. You can upload two images, supply a criteria or question to rate them on, and in less than a minute responses will start flowing in. Due to some delays in the system, you are currently likely to see responses coming in also for some while after the first 100. I am currently working on more audience targeting features. Let me know what kind of features you would think are cool, and let me know how you would like to use the tool!

Users commented on a tool for quick human feedback on image preferences, comparing it to Mechanical Turk and expressing a need to understand the target audience. They found it easier to use and appreciated the real-time access to human opinions. Questions were raised about the employment of 100 real humans. Users also suggested a feature to pick between two images and encouraged voting.

Users criticized the Show HN product for delays in response time after the first 100 interactions, a lack of clear comparison with Amazon's service, potential limitations to the US or English-speaking users, insufficient explanation about the use of 100 real humans, and difficulty in finding images for selection.

TinyGiny - Collect feedback on designs easily

TinyGiny helps you select the right visuals based on votes from your colleagues or customers. You create a poll, upload the assets, decide whether you want users to rate every option or pick just one and share a no-hassle voting link with them - that's it.

Users have noted that the product's name and logo initially resemble a 'mini vajayjay'. Feedback suggests a need for more detailed user feedback mechanisms, including comments and drawings. There's interest in the form functionality and comment annotation capabilities. The product, TinyGiny, is appreciated for aiding in the challenging process of gathering feedback on visual products.

The primary criticisms revolve around the product's name and logo, which some users find potentially inappropriate or misleading.
