Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea of a website that lets users virtually try on clothes using the Gemini API places you in a crowded market, specifically within what we call the 'Swamp' category. There are already around 15 similar products out there, indicating high competition. Engagement with these existing solutions is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. While it's encouraging that existing solutions have demonstrated positive signals towards people actually buying these kind of products, this is also a double edged sword that means you're going to have to fight hard to differentiate yourself. People have tried similar solutions, and you'll need a compelling reason for them to switch to yours. Given the landscape, successfully breaking through will require a fundamentally different approach or focusing on a specific, underserved niche.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly investigate why existing virtual try-on solutions haven't achieved widespread adoption. Analyze user reviews, identify pain points, and understand the limitations of current technologies. Focus on understanding what users truly dislike about current solutions to identify potential gaps in the market.
  2. If you decide to proceed, narrow your focus to a specific, underserved group within the fashion market. For example, consider focusing on a particular body type, age group, or style preference. Tailoring the virtual try-on experience to a niche audience can increase the relevance and value of your solution.
  3. Instead of directly competing with existing virtual try-on platforms, explore the possibility of building tools or services that enhance their capabilities. This could involve developing AI-powered styling recommendations, improving the accuracy of virtual garment fitting, or creating integrations with e-commerce platforms. Think of how you could become an asset to current solutions rather than competition.
  4. Consider looking at adjacent problems within the fashion or e-commerce industry that might be more promising. Perhaps there's an opportunity to use the Gemini API for personalized style recommendations, automated product tagging, or visual search. Exploring related challenges might lead to a more viable and less competitive business model.
  5. Given the competitive landscape and the struggles of existing solutions, carefully weigh the potential rewards against the required investment of time and resources. It might be prudent to save your energy and capital for a different opportunity with a higher likelihood of success. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
  6. Based on the discussions from similar products, focus on ease of use and instant feedback. Users have praised solutions that are simple to navigate and provide immediate results. Ensure that your website is intuitive and the virtual try-on process is seamless.
  7. Prioritize mobile and cross-browser compatibility. The launch of the website for similar products was considered fantastic because of its accessibility across different devices and browsers. Ensure that your website works flawlessly on various platforms to reach a wider audience.
  8. Explore the versatility of AI showcased by similar extensions. Users appreciate the increase in freedom and performance that website uploads from anywhere provide. Consider allowing users to upload images from different sources to try on clothes virtually.

Questions

  1. What specific technological advantage does the Gemini API offer over existing AI solutions used in virtual try-on applications, and how will this translate into a demonstrably superior user experience that justifies switching from established platforms?
  2. Given the low engagement observed in similar products, what innovative strategies will you employ to foster a vibrant community around your virtual try-on platform and ensure users not only try the clothes but also share their experiences and provide valuable feedback?
  3. Considering that many users value ease of use and instant results, how will you balance the complexity of AI-powered virtual try-on technology with the need for a simple, intuitive user interface that doesn't overwhelm or confuse potential customers?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Virtual Try-On, 1 click Chrome extension for visualizing clothes on you

31 Aug 2024 Fashion

We created a Chrome extension to let you virtually try on clothes from popular websites like Nike and Amazon using your own photo (I also use it for my kids - as a parent, they are the one I mostly buy clothes for).Key features and motivations:- One-click visualization on supported websites: no more downloading and re-uploading images -> this was really the flow I wanted and that other extension or website do not offer right now. I see something I like, I click, and that's it. - Use your own picture as the model - Works for tops, pants and dresses on multiple clothing sites (does not work for shoes or accessories)We used this AI to build the engine: https://idm-vton.github.io/ While working on it there was a new cool one (Kolors) that has been released and that we would like to try as well in the Future (anyone has been using it?)It's a weekend project built with my friend Kalkidan from Ethiopia, currently in beta. We'd love your feedback!

I build a chrome extension to try on clothes before buying

Hi HN,I built a Chrome extension that lets you try on clothes virtually in any e-commerce store. The entire product was built over the weekend using Cursor editor's multi-compose feature. How It Works: - Captures the product image directly from the webpage using GPT-4. - Uploads your photo to Cloudinary for AI processing. - Uses the Kolors model from Hugging Face via the Gradio API for the try-on. - Stores images in your browser cache for faster performance. To use it, you'll need to set up your OpenAI and Cloudinary API keys in the extension settings. Here is a demo video: https://x.com/shyjal/status/1830824363303805278Please give it a try and let me know your thoughts.
