Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

The idea of an AI-powered travel planning app falls into a crowded space, which we call the 'Swamp' category. We found 30 similar products, so the competition is high. These types of apps aim to simplify travel by using AI to research and generate itineraries, considering factors like flight prices, hotels, tips, and language. However, the average engagement for similar products is low (3 comments). The similar products we looked at didn't have any meaningful buy or use signals either. This suggests that many of the existing solutions haven't quite hit the mark, and users might be struggling to find one that truly meets their needs. To succeed, you'll need to offer something fundamentally different from the existing sea of mediocre apps.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by deeply researching why existing travel planning apps haven't achieved widespread success. Analyze user reviews, identify pain points, and determine the unmet needs that your app can address uniquely. Look at the discussion and criticism summaries, and you'll find that many users have concerns around accuracy, transparency, and the level of personalization offered by these AI travel apps.
  2. If you decide to move forward, identify a specific niche or group of travelers that are currently underserved by existing travel planning tools. Instead of trying to be everything for everyone, focus on catering to the unique needs and preferences of this target audience. Examples could be sustainable travel, budget backpacking, or adventure travel for families.
  3. Explore the possibility of building tools or features that integrate with existing travel providers and platforms rather than creating a standalone app. Providing API access, integrations with booking platforms, or integrations with niche travel services (e.g. adventure travel, group travel, etc.) might be a viable strategy.
  4. Given the crowded market for AI travel planning, consider exploring adjacent problems within the travel industry that might offer more promising opportunities. This could include areas like personalized travel insurance, AI-powered customer service for travel agencies, or tools for managing travel logistics for remote workers.
  5. Closely examine how AI is integrated into your app. Many users are skeptical of AI-driven recommendations and want to understand the underlying logic. Be transparent about how the AI works and give users control over the parameters that influence their travel plans. Make sure you avoid the issues reported by other users such as a lack of detailed information regarding implementation, features, and UI as well as the accuracy of recommendations and limitations concerning travel planning.
  6. Prioritize accuracy and up-to-date information. Address criticisms of similar products by ensuring that your app provides reliable data on pricing, availability, and local conditions. Incorporate user feedback mechanisms to continuously improve the accuracy of your recommendations. Users have complained about limited availability, the absence of specific regions, and incorrect information.
  7. Implement features that directly address common user concerns with AI travel planning. This could include options for increased customization, booking links, additional information, and a more intuitive call-to-action (CTA), as suggested by users of similar platforms. Make sure to fix the problems of the generated itinerary lacking value and customization. Users also reported issues with the call-to-action (CTA) links leading to 404 errors, slow generation times, and a need for more autocompletion features and visual aids.
  8. Monetization should be carefully considered. Since it's hard to get people to pay (no net positive buy signals among the competitive products), think of alternative ways to support the development cost besides direct payments. Use affiliate marketing, but don't make it too obvious.

Questions

  1. What specific, underserved niche within the travel market will your app target, and how will your AI-powered features uniquely address their needs in a way that existing solutions don't?
  2. Considering the low engagement and lack of positive 'buy' signals for similar products, what innovative monetization strategies will you employ to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of your AI travel planning app?
  3. How will you build trust and transparency into your AI travel planning app, giving users confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the recommendations it provides, especially in light of criticisms around data accuracy and logical reasoning in competing products?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Tripnotes.ai: Intelligent Travel Planner

Hey HN,We're excited to announce the public beta preview of Tripnotes, an intelligent travel planner that mixes a custom recommendation engine, our own data, and a bit of GPT to help you find the right places to go while traveling. Our team has been working hard on this project for 6 months, and we're excited to finally share it with the HN community. With Tripnotes, you can keep track of all your notes about travel when planning to visit a city. Paste in article URLs, videos, emails, text messages, any other text, and if you need some help with research, ask our Concierge which will provide useful recommendations and itineraries for the city in question - with a fallback to GPT for things we didn't quite understand. If you're not ready to dive right in, here are a few short highlight videos:https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1619047755271536640https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1621172173598756864https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1623703548545445890https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1638010661694234625All the places by Tripnotes are from our own database, but we rely upon GPT to understand the intent of the incoming prompts, as well as to help with the prose in our response to ensure the place descriptions fit what's being asked for.Since we tweeted about our preview release on Monday, we've had over 15,000 people come and try at least one prompt, with over 40,000 unique notes generated from prompts about cities all over the world. We'd love for you to give Tripnotes a try and let us know what you think. The "unauthed" version is open to everyone. If you're interested in using the full version, please join our waitlist. The full version maintains a history of your notes and allows you to edit the text and auto-highlights any text you write/paste in on the fly, which can be useful for pasting recommendations from friends (say via SMS or Email) and having them auto-highlighted and mapped. You can also paste in links from articles, websites, blogs, even Tiktok or Youtube. We scrape those urls, gather the list of places that are mentioned, and then show them on the map along side the rest of your note. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback, so please feel free to leave a comment or reach out to us directly. Thanks for your support!

The product is praised for its usefulness in travel planning and regular updates. However, users have reported errors in closures and descriptions, and there are concerns about the app siphoning data from phones.

Users raised concerns about the sources and updates of the database, reported errors in closures and descriptions, and expressed worries about the app siphoning all data from their phones.

TripClub – Plan Travel with AI

Hey HN! This is Will and Riley from TripClub (https://tripclub.ai/). TripClub helps you plan and visualize your trips while giving you recommended itineraries to anywhere in the world based on your input. We began working on this when we couldn’t find a good solution to plan trips with friends, and found that most people we knew used something like google docs along with 24 tabs for researching places. Also, with the recent progress in generative AI, we found that we could now create detailed trips based on any input you’d like, and turn these into visually appealing itineraries. As you may have suspected, we primarily use openAI models for trip generation on the backend. We put the recommendations into an interactable map and itinerary. After creating a trip, you can add your friends so everyone can collaborate on editing the various places on your itinerary.Right now every aspect of the app is free and we hope to keep it that way. However we haven’t built in a source of revenue at the moment and are fully bootstrapped, so this could change (we plan to make revenue on hotel bookings in the future). We’re looking forward to hearing any of your comments, questions, and feedback!

Users provided mixed feedback on a travel app, noting an unrealistic bicycle tour itinerary and suggesting improvements in suggested times. Positive remarks include excitement about a specific bicycle tour and the ability to use the app without signing up. A bachelor party itinerary with continuous drinking was mentioned, and one user requested a demo trial without the need for sign-up, while another agreed to try with an email account.

Users criticized the product for an unrealistic itinerary, issues with trip details, and a lack of consideration for hangovers, implying an unrealistic assumption of continuous drinking. They also noted that suggested times were impractical, results were not visible, and there is a need for change. Criticisms included non-local date/time settings, insufficient information, and a lack of full responsiveness.

Users appreciate the landing page and free trial of the AI itinerary planner but suggest improvements such as more customization options, booking links, additional information, and fixing the call-to-action (CTA) button.

The generated itinerary lacks value and customization. Users also reported issues with the call-to-action (CTA) links leading to 404 errors, slow generation times, and a need for more autocompletion features and visual aids.

I made tool to plan your trips

09 Jul 2024 Travel

My second startup is a tool to help with traveling.I love traveling, but keeping everything organized can be a real headache. It's tough to remember flight times, hotel bookings, and daily plans. I used to struggle with messy notes and missed details.I looked for solutions, but nothing really worked for me. I used simple notes, but I always missed something when I tried to access them, like when I wanted to visit a place or eat somewhere. I even tried popular apps like "TripIt" to arrange all my trips, but the interface was too complex and had too many details to fill in.I wanted something where I could save all my dates, location names, and especially important notes like:Eat in the old cafe in Paris. Visit the river in Florence.Where I can fill in fields if I wanted or just leave them empty. That's why I made. It's a simple tool that helps you keep all your plan details in one place.Check it out, and let me know what you think!Happy travels!

TripPlanss is praised for simplifying travel organization and being easy to use. However, some users experience anxiety due to inconsistency in the tool's name.

Users criticized the tool for having inconsistent naming conventions, which caused confusion and hindered usability.
