Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea falls into the "Swamp" category, meaning there are existing solutions, but they aren't particularly loved or successful. Given the high number of similar products (n_matches = 9) already available, competition is fierce. These products don't generate any significant engagement (avg n_comments = 1), implying that most people don't even bother using them at all, let alone talking about them. This suggests that entering this market would be challenging, especially since existing similar products received criticism for lacking features, being overpriced, and sometimes being of questionable legitimacy. You need to think very hard if this is the right approach for you.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly investigate the reasons why current solutions in this area have failed to gain traction. Understanding their shortcomings will be crucial in determining whether your idea has the potential to succeed or is simply replicating existing problems. Look at the criticisms from existing similar products - that is invaluable information.
  2. If you decide to proceed, identify a very specific niche or user group that is currently underserved by existing solutions. Targeting a smaller, more focused audience may increase your chances of creating a product that truly meets their needs. What is unique for this specific group that nobody else cares about?
  3. Instead of directly competing with existing solutions, explore the possibility of developing tools or integrations that enhance their functionality or address specific pain points for those providers. By working with them, you might have a higher chance of success than going up against them directly.
  4. Consider adjacent problems that might be more promising and less saturated than the current one. Perhaps there's a related issue that hasn't been adequately addressed, offering a better opportunity for innovation and market entry. The adult industry is full of adjacent problems.
  5. Based on the landscape and the challenges, carefully weigh the potential rewards against the required effort. It may be wise to conserve your resources and focus on a different venture with better prospects for success. Don't be afraid to abandon this idea if it doesn't seem viable.
  6. Given that existing solutions are criticized for link rot (broken links to blocked content), ensure that your product has a robust and constantly updated mechanism for identifying and blocking inappropriate content. How will you maintain an accurate and comprehensive list of sites, and how will you deal with dynamic websites whose content change frequently?
  7. Address concerns about content filtering. Some existing solutions were flagged for triggering content filters unintentionally. How will you design your filtering mechanism to minimize false positives and ensure that legitimate content is not blocked?
  8. Explicitly state your product's limitations regarding platforms like Twitter. Users of existing solutions have expressed confusion about whether or not certain social media platforms are blocked. Be upfront about what your product can and cannot block, to avoid misleading potential users.

Questions

  1. Given the low engagement with existing solutions, what specific features or functionalities will differentiate your product and make it significantly more appealing to users? Why will users choose your extension over existing ones, and what problem will you solve better?
  2. Considering the criticisms about link rot and the dynamic nature of adult content websites, how will you ensure that your extension's blocking capabilities remain effective and up-to-date over time? What is your plan for long-term content maintenance?
  3. How will you address the potential privacy concerns associated with accessing a user's camera and monitoring their facial expressions? How will you communicate your data collection and usage policies transparently to users, and how will you gain their trust?

Temporarily lock yourself out from your phone, computer or account

25 Feb 2024 Productivity

Hi HN,with lockmeout.online, I created an online time-lock service aimed at locking yourself out of distractions and help you to focus on important tasks and activities.During the pandemic I noticed that I could not stay focused when reading a book for an extended period of time anymore - my mind was consistently urging me to check my phone or social media. Other productivity apps did not help me much, as my mind was still playing tricks on me ("Who cares what the usage report says", "I can bypass the block easily by just doing XYZ...").Therefore, I came up with the idea of an irreversible (but temporary) solution: Changing your phone unlock code or account password, and putting it into an online time lock - impossible to bypass or revert until a certain timespan has elapsed. I myself noticed that once my mind was convinced there is no way to bypass the lock, I could focus on complex tasks and experience slow-paced, mindful moments again.

The comments include a humorous comparison to a shock collar device and a reminder that life exists outside.

I built a Chrome extension pornblocker,it featured on Google webstore

26 Apr 2024 Chrome Extensions

I wanted to share the rollercoaster ride of creating and launching my Chrome extension, "PornBlocker," which is now proudly featured on the Google Web Store. This journey had everything: a dream, unexpected roadblocks, dramatic turns, and an eventual sweet victory. The story begins about two years ago. I was a recent CS grad with a burning passion to make a difference. The internet, as we all know, can be a wild place, especially for younger audiences and individuals trying to avoid specific types of content. That’s where my idea for PornBlocker began. The goal? To develop an extension that could automatically block adult content, ensuring a safer browsing experience.Initially, I thought the biggest hurdle would be the technical side—building the extension. Little did I know, the real challenge would lie elsewhere. I dove headfirst into coding, spending countless nights converting coffee into code. After three months of rigorous testing and tweaking, PornBlocker was ready. Or so I thought.I excitedly launched it on the Google Web Store, expecting immediate attention and downloads. That’s when I hit my first major roadblock. The extension was there, but it was practically invisible. No downloads, no reviews—nothing. I was devastated. Had I missed something crucial? Was my effort all for naught?Determined to find out why, I started reaching out to users on forums and social media. The feedback was eye-opening but hard to swallow. Users liked the idea but found the extension clunky and the user interface unintuitive. It was back to the drawing board.Over the next few months, I revamped everything from the UI/UX to the underlying algorithms. The second version was sleeker, faster, and more user-friendly. With bated breath, I re-launched it. This time, the response was slightly better. People started downloading it, and some positive reviews trickled in. But then, another turn.Just when things seemed to be picking up, a competing extension was released, boasting similar features with a bigger marketing budget. It was crushing. My download numbers started dwindling as the competitor scooped up users. It felt like all my hard work was going to be overshadowed.Refusing to give up, I doubled down on what I believed was my extension’s USP: privacy protection. Unlike my competitor, I made sure that PornBlocker didn’t track user data. I emphasized this in my marketing, reaching out to privacy advocates and getting involved in online communities that valued anonymity. My efforts paid off slowly but steadily. The big break came when a popular tech blogger who champions digital privacy reviewed PornBlocker. They praised the extension's ability to block content without compromising user privacy. This review went viral, and suddenly, PornBlocker was back in the game.Downloads surged, and feedback poured in. More improvements were made, turning users into evangelists who recommended the extension to others. The climax of this journey was receiving an email from Google acknowledging the positive impact of PornBlocker and featuring it on the Web Store’s main page.Looking back, this journey taught me more about perseverance and user feedback than any coding bootcamp ever could. Every setback was a setup for a greater comeback. It wasn't just about building a successful product but about pushing through failures, listening to your users, and standing by your core values.Thank you for letting me share my story here. If you’re curious about PornBlocker or have any questions, I’m here to chat in the comments!https://pornblocker.co

NoFap: I created an extension to block porn websites

20 Apr 2024 Chrome Extensions

The NoFap Extension is a browser tool designed to block access to pornographic websites. Unlike other blockers that require users to add URLs manually, this extension automatically bans such websites without the need for user intervention. It provides a simple and effective solution for those seeking to limit their exposure to explicit content online.

Users reported an error code indicating content filtering issues, and expressed concerns about the longevity of adult content sites. There was a mention of the product's scope, representing a small fraction of porn sites. One user recommended Mullvad's DNS servers as an alternative solution. Questions were raised about the product's ability to block platforms like Twitter, and at least one comment was flagged for review.

Users criticized the product for triggering content filters, having a small representation of adult sites, suffering from significant link rot and ad-heavy pages, and for being unclear about its ability to block Twitter.
