Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea for a shorts video generator targets a crowded market. We found 27 similar products, indicating high competition. The overall engagement for these products is low, with an average of 2 comments per product launch. This suggests that many solutions already exist, and it might be difficult to stand out. Several competing tools, like 'Shorts Generator' and 'I built a simple tool for making short form videos' have received negative feedback regarding functionality, or unappealing thumbnails. This confirms that the idea falls into the 'Swamp' category, which implies that many have tried and failed to deliver a compelling solution. Because the buy signal is not strong, unless you offer something drastically different, you might find it hard to make a dent in this market, and even harder to monetize your product.

Recommendations

  1. Given the competitive landscape and the 'Swamp' category designation, deeply research why existing solutions haven’t resonated with users. Identify their shortcomings in terms of functionality, user experience, and content quality. Explore the negative feedback from similar products, and use this to inform how to make your product better.
  2. Rather than targeting the general market, identify a very specific niche or user group that is currently underserved by existing shorts video generators. This could be based on industry, content style, or technical skill level. For example, focus on generating content for educational videos, or building a tool to automatically convert blog posts into short videos.
  3. Consider focusing on building tools or integrations that enhance existing video editing platforms or services, instead of creating a standalone product. This could involve developing plugins for popular video editing software or creating APIs that allow other platforms to integrate short-form video generation capabilities. This could be a quicker path to market and provide a useful service without directly competing with the many products in this 'Swamp' category.
  4. Explore adjacent problems in the video creation or marketing space that may be more promising and less saturated. This could include tools for video SEO, thumbnail optimization, or A/B testing video content. This gives you the opportunity to build a product that complements existing solutions and addresses unmet needs in the market.
  5. Before investing significant time and resources, create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with a unique selling proposition (USP) and test it rigorously with your target audience. Gather feedback and iterate based on user input before committing to further development. Don't build a full-fledged product without understanding if there is an audience.
  6. Analyze the pricing strategies of existing short-form video creation tools. Determine whether you can offer a more compelling value proposition by providing more competitive pricing or unique features at the same price point. Consider freemium or tiered pricing models to accommodate different user needs and budget levels.
  7. Given the feedback that some existing products have usability issues, focus on a clean, intuitive interface that is easy for beginners to use while still offering advanced features for experienced creators. Provide excellent customer support, address user issues promptly, and actively solicit feedback to improve the product.

Questions

  1. Given the existing solutions in the 'Swamp' category, what specific problem are you solving that others aren't, and how will you ensure that your solution is fundamentally different and more compelling?
  2. How will you measure the success of your product beyond just user acquisition, and what metrics will you use to determine if users are truly finding value in your short video generation tool?
  3. Considering that several similar products have received negative feedback for functionality and UI issues, what specific steps will you take to ensure your product provides a seamless and enjoyable user experience from day one?

I made an AI short-form video generator for TikTok

I made an AI short-form video generator for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Everything is automated: script, narration, images, captions sync and the editing. It reduces time to create faceless content from hours down to minutes, and efforts for the user down to a prompt. Think ChatGPT to create short-form videos. Before getting into how it's built, let me give some context. Here's how I go the idea. While scrolling through my YouTube feed, I suddenly started noticing more and more fully AI generated content.More precisely, I'm talking about the script, the narration, the images, the captions… It all seemed like it was made using OpenAI, StabilityAI and other popular models.I dug deeper and got to learn how there are people making money off of faceless channels and theme pages that are essentially social media accounts centered around 1 specific topic (memes, motivational content, travel, etc.)I got the prototype done within 2 days. And I'm not gonna lie, I was kinda shocked how good this all was.I ended up using Next.js hosted on a VPS with SQLite as the database. I also started using Linear to keep track of all tasks and it was such a breeze to work with their Mac app.The pipeline is a bunch of Python scripts calling APIs.The biggest technical challenge that I foresee is how much RAM combining 1 video takes. I'm using ffmpeg and it goes up to 1.1Gb per video. I'll definitely have to look into compressing the AI generated images beforehand and also eventually store them probably on Cloudflare to free up storage space.

Generate Viral Shorts Using in Browser TTS and WASM

31 Oct 2023 Video

I used a combo of Transformers.js + FFMPEg-WASM to be able to create a flow of going from Text to Audio to Video. Let me know what you think.Currently the biggest issues are the slow performance but it still isn't too bad for short videos (under 60 seconds).
