Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space in the app market with your idea for an app that locks certain phone features to help users curb specific habits. Our analysis indicates this idea falls into the 'Swamp' category, meaning there are existing solutions, but none have truly captivated users. With 23 similar products already out there, you'll face stiff competition. Engagement with these apps, as measured by average comments, is low. It's a tough market, and standing out will require a fundamentally different approach. Don't get discouraged; this just means you need to bring something truly unique to the table, or consider a different path altogether. But based on the metrics, the main issue will be how to get users to actually care about using your app for the long term.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by thoroughly investigating why existing app-blocking solutions haven't achieved widespread success. Dive into user reviews, analyze competitor strategies (and failures), and identify the unmet needs or pain points that your app could address. This will help you avoid repeating past mistakes and potentially uncover a niche where your app can truly shine. For example, research the criticism in similar apps, such as how some apps contribute to the distraction they aim to solve.
  2. If you decide to proceed, resist the urge to create a generic app for everyone. Instead, identify a specific niche or demographic that is currently underserved by existing solutions. This could be students struggling with social media during study hours, individuals recovering from addiction, or parents seeking to limit their children's access to certain apps. Tailoring your app to a specific audience will make it more appealing and increase your chances of gaining traction.
  3. Instead of directly competing with established app stores and developers, consider creating tools or features that integrate with or enhance their existing offerings. This could involve developing a plugin or extension for popular productivity apps, or partnering with existing wellness platforms to offer your app as a complementary service. For instance, you might build a feature that allows existing parental control apps to have more granular control over specific apps.
  4. Explore adjacent problems that might be more promising and less competitive. For example, instead of focusing solely on blocking apps, you could develop a comprehensive digital wellness platform that incorporates features like mindful usage tracking, personalized recommendations, and community support. Or you could look into an app that helps people build better digital habits, rather than just restricting access.
  5. Given the challenges and competition in this market, it might be wise to save your time, energy, and resources for a different opportunity. There are countless other problems waiting to be solved, and your skills and passion might be better suited to a different project. Remember that knowing when to walk away from an idea is just as important as knowing when to pursue one.
  6. Explore ways to incorporate accountability and community support within your app. Users may be more likely to stick with their goals if they have a support system or face consequences for breaking their commitments. Consider integrating features like shared progress tracking, group challenges, or accountability partners to enhance user engagement and motivation. For inspiration see the Antisocial app's penalty system.
  7. Clearly articulate how your app differentiates itself from existing app-blocking solutions. What unique features, benefits, or approaches does it offer that others don't? Whether it's a more intuitive interface, a wider range of customization options, or a more effective blocking mechanism, make sure your value proposition is clear and compelling.

Questions

  1. Given the existing solutions in the market, what is the one key, fundamental difference that will make your app stand out and become a user favorite, rather than just another forgotten app-blocking tool?
  2. Considering the low engagement observed in similar products, how will you design your app to foster long-term user commitment and prevent users from simply uninstalling it when faced with immediate temptation?
  3. How can you proactively address potential loopholes or workarounds that users might discover to bypass your app's restrictions, and ensure that your app remains effective in helping users achieve their goals?

Fitlock – Block apps until you reach your daily fitness/health goals

05 Jan 2024 Health & Fitness

Introducing Fitlock, the privacy-focused app designed to empower users in curbing screen time and enhancing fitness through the utilisation of Apple Health and Screen Time features. Fitlock's innovative approach involves blocking apps and websites until users achieve their daily health and fitness objectives. Here's how Fitlock operates: users can establish a personalised schedule to block specific apps at chosen times of the day, adjusting the strictness level of the block to suit their preferences. Once the user's schedule is active, the blocked apps remain inaccessible until they successfully meet their health and fitness goals. For instance, a user might set up a schedule to restrict social media apps daily, unlocking them only for 30 minutes each time they reach 2000 steps within the specified timeframe.Beyond its core functionality, Fitlock boasts additional features like progress tracking over time and a range of strictness levels to cater to diverse user preferences. It's worth noting that Fitlock is currently exclusive to iOS, but stay tuned as there are plans to develop an Android version in the near future. I'd love to hear your questions/feedback.

App Lock by Lilucat – Hide apps and lock videos and photos

25 Sep 2024 iOS

Hey HN!I’m Kevin, co-founder of Lilucat, a small indie team passionate about building privacy-focused and user-friendly products. Today, I’m excited to share one of our most popular projects: App Lock by Lilucat. What is App Lock? App Lock lets you securely lock and hide apps, photos, and videos on your iOS device. It’s designed to enhance privacy, protect sensitive data, and prevent unauthorized access. Here’s what it can do:Lock any app instantly with your PIN or Face ID (password unlock coming soon). Restrict device configurations, like blocking app installations or removals, preventing in-app purchases, and more. Hide apps completely—hidden apps aren’t just removed from the home screen, they’re invisible in the App Library as well. Why use App Lock? Whether you’re safeguarding financial apps, securing personal data, or controlling what kids can access, App Lock provides an extra layer of privacy. It’s especially helpful for those in regions where using certain apps might put them at risk. While iOS 18 introduced Face ID app locking, App Lock offers a more comprehensive solution—on iOS, hidden apps can still be found in a folder in the App Library, whereas with our app, hidden apps remain completely invisible unless unlocked through App Lock. We’ve built this app with privacy at its core, and we’d love your feedback to keep improving! You can find more info on App Lock by Lilucat here: https://lilucat.com/app-lock/Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas!

Barrier – Social Lock, an iOS Tool to Reduce Screen Time

09 May 2024 iOS Social Media

Hi HN,I’ve developed an iOS app called Barrier - Social Lock, which is all about managing and reducing screen time on social media and other addictive apps. I built this as a personal crusade against my own social media overuse, using Apple's Screen Time API to keep apps in check. The deal is simple: apps get locked and then re-locked after 10 blissful minutes of use. Now, when it’s time to unlock an app, there’s a twist: you’re subjected to a 30-second ad. No escape, no alternatives. Why? Because I figured the only thing more annoying than a digital detox is having to watch an ad. It's my sneaky way of adding a bit of a deterrent, and honestly, because everyone loathes ads, it adds a layer of comedic misery to the ordeal.I'm really keen to get your feedback on Barrier: Are there features you think could make it even better? Any annoying bugs I should squash? I'm all ears for any feedback that can help make Barrier the best buzzkill for app addiction. Also, I’m curious to hear from other indie devs on your app promotion adventures. How do you get the word out about your iOS apps? What’s worked, what hasn’t?For anyone game to try Barrier or interested in offering feedback, you can check it out at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/barrier-social-lock/id64482444.... Looking forward to any insightful suggestions!

Freedom - iOS app blocking made easy

17 Aug 2023 iOS Productivity Apple

Add iOS Apps to Freedom blocklists, and you’ll be able to block distracting apps during Freedom sessions. Sync across all devices - Freedom will block distracting apps and websites so you can focus, be more productive, and build better screen time habits.

The product launch received positive feedback, with users congratulating the team. Users are interested in its potential to aid with focus, reduce distractions, and promote mindfulness. There's also interest in future features geared towards mindful productivity.

The primary criticism is that despite its purpose, the product contributes to the distraction caused by notifications and the habit of constantly checking apps. This suggests users are concerned about the product's effectiveness in reducing digital distractions, as it seemingly perpetuates the cycle.

I made an app that locks you out of your Instagram account

01 Jan 2024 Android Social Media

I'm the developer and would love to have folks join me in logging off for the start of the year. Built this after taking the last three months off of social media. It is pretty straightforward tech-wise, but the ritual of locking yourself out has proven really powerful for me.

The comments discuss various aspects of a new product or service. One user invites others to log off social media, suggesting it could be useful for a New Year digital detox. Concerns are raised about hard disk failure consequences and backup issues. There is also mention of a loophole that could be exploited to cheat, and a suggestion to reset passwords with new ones.

Users criticized the lack of information on the consequences of hard disk failure and raised concerns about a loophole that allows cheating, which in turn questions the reliability of the backup system.

Temporarily lock yourself out from your phone, computer or account

25 Feb 2024 Productivity

Hi HN,with lockmeout.online, I created an online time-lock service aimed at locking yourself out of distractions and help you to focus on important tasks and activities.During the pandemic I noticed that I could not stay focused when reading a book for an extended period of time anymore - my mind was consistently urging me to check my phone or social media. Other productivity apps did not help me much, as my mind was still playing tricks on me ("Who cares what the usage report says", "I can bypass the block easily by just doing XYZ...").Therefore, I came up with the idea of an irreversible (but temporary) solution: Changing your phone unlock code or account password, and putting it into an online time lock - impossible to bypass or revert until a certain timespan has elapsed. I myself noticed that once my mind was convinced there is no way to bypass the lock, I could focus on complex tasks and experience slow-paced, mindful moments again.

The comments include a humorous comparison to a shock collar device and a reminder that life exists outside.
