Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space: an AI tool search engine with adaptability dashboards. Our analysis reveals a significant number of similar products already exist (n_matches = 28), which firmly places your idea in a 'Swamp' category. This means you'll face substantial competition and the risk of getting lost among mediocre solutions if you don't offer something truly unique. The average engagement across these similar products is low (n_comments = 3), suggesting that users aren't particularly excited about existing solutions or that they're not finding what they need. Given that this category falls into the 'Swamp', it’s crucial to understand why current solutions aren't resonating with users. The existing solutions have been criticized for being too similar, for UI/UX issues, for signup issues and for simply being seen as 'junk'. Without a fundamental difference, success will be an uphill battle.

Recommendations

  1. Before diving in, conduct thorough research on why current AI tool search engines haven't fully succeeded. Analyze user reviews, identify pain points, and pinpoint the gaps in the market that your platform can uniquely address. Leverage the negative feedback from similar products, specifically around signup issues and UI/UX problems, to inform your development process.
  2. If you still want to proceed, focus on identifying a niche group of users that are currently underserved by existing AI tool directories. What specific industry, use case, or skill level can you cater to with a curated and specialized search experience? Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, carve out a niche where you can provide exceptional value.
  3. Explore the possibility of creating tools or services that enhance the capabilities of existing AI tool providers, instead of directly competing with them. For example, you could develop a plugin or integration that improves the search functionality, enhances the user experience, or automates specific tasks within these platforms. This may result in faster adoption rates and immediate revenue, since you'll be providing value to existing platforms.
  4. Consider examining adjacent problems that might be more promising. Instead of another AI tool directory, could you focus on helping users integrate AI tools into their workflows, or train them on how to use these tools effectively? By shifting your focus to a related area with less competition, you may find a more viable path to success.
  5. Given the crowded marketplace and the challenges faced by existing solutions, it's wise to carefully consider whether this is the best use of your time and resources. Explore other startup ideas or focus on personal development until a better opportunity presents itself. A well-timed pivot could save you from investing in a likely failure.
  6. Based on the user feedback from similar products, focus relentlessly on the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI). Make sure the tool is easy to navigate and use, not 'dashboard-like', and eliminate all friction. Address any possible signup issues reported by users by implementing third party signin (Google, X, Facebook).
  7. Given that some users complained about 'junk' in the results, create a very transparent and highly visible ranking system for your search results. List the criteria for inclusion and exclusion and allow users to flag tools for manual review. Prioritize community input in order to down-rank the junk and improve result quality.

Questions

  1. What are the top 3-5 AI tools that you personally use regularly, and what specific pain points do you experience when trying to discover new AI tools that could further improve your workflow?
  2. How can you implement a feedback loop where user interactions directly influence the ranking and discoverability of AI tools within your search engine, creating a dynamic and self-improving ecosystem?
  3. Given that multiple similar products have launched recently, what is your unfair advantage that will allow you to gain significant market share and outcompete the existing solutions? Is it superior technology, a unique distribution channel, or a deeply entrenched relationship with a specific user group?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

AskAITools – A Search Engine for Discovering AI Apps

Hi, everyone. I created a search engine dedicated to helping people find the right AI tools for a specific task.I built it after noticing a recurring pattern in AI forums: people constantly asking for tool recommendations.Key features:- Smart search combining keyword matching and semantic understanding- Clean, ad-free interface- Database of 10,000+ AI tools- Metrics display (monthly visits, interaction rates) to aid decision-making- Open-source core functionality (https://github.com/askaitools/askaitools-community-edition)I built this to solve a personal pain point and hopefully make AI tool discovery more efficient for others. Looking forward to your feedback and suggestions for improvement.

The Show HN product received mixed feedback. Users appreciated the open-source nature for community contributions and the speed of the AI search platform. It was noted as a useful AI tool, with some users discovering sales tools they needed. However, there were also comments indicating a lack of content and some comments were marked as dead.

Users feel that while there are a few good AI tools, the majority are considered mediocre.

AiSearch, the search engine that down-ranks junk

A lot has changed since I last posted about AI Search. It now supports all languages and uses a multitude of AI models under the hood resulting in fast AI summariesThe UI has been revamped and a chrome extension is now available that integrates searches with the navigation bar (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ai-search/eoggknli...)I am not holding my breath for AiSearch becoming a well-known search engine any time soon. In fact, I prefer if it doesn't as I don't want to draw attention in the search engine all-out war. However, I have chosen to give the product for free because I find it useful for myself and perhaps someone can also benefit from it. Obviously, the engine is as private as it can beIf it becomes too expensive to run, I will unfortunately have to kill it. We'll see. Current costs are pretty low and I don't need it to feed me

Users are concerned about how the system determines what is considered junk and are complaining about the presence of ads in AI-generated summary results.

Users criticized the unclear criteria for determining junk and the presence of ads despite downranking them.

There are congratulatory messages and encouragement for continued excellent work. However, one user expresses frustration about the missing link/address, not wanting to search for the company.
