Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

You're entering a competitive market with your travel planning app for solo and group travelers. Our analysis shows high confidence due to the existence of 29 similar products. This also means there's a significant amount of competition. The freemium model seems to be prevalent in this category, which means people like using travel planning apps, but they aren't so eager to pay for them. Given this, you'll need to carefully consider how to differentiate your app and how to create additional value that users are willing to pay for. It's a 'build but think about differentiation and monetization' situation, so let's get to work!

Recommendations

  1. Given the freemium nature of this category, start by deeply understanding which user segments (solo travelers vs. groups, budget travelers vs. luxury travelers, etc.) derive the most value from the free version of your app. Focus user research and analytics on these groups to identify their pain points and unmet needs.
  2. Based on that understanding, design premium features that directly address the needs of your most engaged free users, making their travel planning even more efficient, enjoyable, or personalized. Consider features like advanced itinerary optimization, exclusive deals, or personalized recommendations based on AI. Consider how AI can add value and what review platforms to link.
  3. Explore charging models that align with the collaborative nature of group travel planning. Instead of charging individual users, consider offering team/group subscriptions that unlock premium features for everyone involved in planning a trip together. Roamazing showed positive feedback on it's beautiful design, lean into this and make sure the app has a great UX and UI.
  4. Differentiate your app by offering personalized help or consulting services, especially for complex or unique travel itineraries. This could involve connecting users with travel experts who can provide customized advice and support for a fee. Tripnotes.ai faced issues with database errors; make sure that your database and information is constantly updated.
  5. Before launching paid features widely, test different pricing approaches and feature bundles with small groups of users. Gather feedback on what they value most and adjust your offerings accordingly. Also make sure that your pricing is easy to understand after considering 80days.me criticism on unclear pricing and upfront paywalls.
  6. Based on the TripBFF feedback, your app should be easy to use. The TripBFF users chose their app over whatsapp or facebook groups. Stippl app users criticized their onboarding friction, so make your onboarding process as frictionless as possible. Address login issues, and avoid a clunky interface based on users' experience with 'Coordinating Trips Between Friends and Family'.
  7. Consider what Voyago users said that the app was lacking, such as packing, translation, navigation and personalization features. Also consider Ambulate's criticism of unreliable 3rd party booking sites with inadequate customer support; users would prefer direct bookings.
  8. Consider TravelTrail-Planifica Tu Viaje's praise regarding AI personalization and detailed information and lean into it, maybe add it to your premium features for travel enthusiasts.
  9. Take into account "I made a web app to open source travel itineraries"'s feedback; users said that the pricing symbols were unclear and the search functionality needs to be improved, and TripPlanss users experienced anxiety due to inconsistent tool names, make sure all of that is consistent and easy to understand.

Questions

  1. Given the prevalence of free travel planning tools, what specific, unique value proposition will entice users to upgrade to your premium features, and how will you effectively communicate this value?
  2. Considering the collaborative nature of group travel, how can you design your app to seamlessly facilitate communication, decision-making, and itinerary sharing among group members, and how will you monetize this functionality?
  3. With several similar apps already in the market, what partnerships or integrations can you forge with airlines, hotels, tour operators, or other travel-related services to offer exclusive deals or personalized experiences that differentiate your app from the competition?

Turas.app for Collaborative Trip Planning

16 Jan 2023 Travel

Over the New Year weekend, I was planning a trip with my wife on Google Docs and it became really frustrating trying to move days and activities around and figuring out which days we needed which hotels and trying to see which order of days/activities worked best for what we wanted to do. So I did what any weekend hacker does and ended up coding something.Turas lets you: - Collaboratively organize and plan your trips and easily reorganize days and places on your itinerary - Quickly visualize how changing the start date changes the structure of your trip - Visualize routes and paths between places on your itinerary and quickly load into Google Maps on the go - Organize your checklists - packing list, pre-departure, and more - Generate a text trip summary - perfect for sending in emails and text messages - Create an inspiration board to capture your notes and ideas as you plan your adventure If you'd like to see a short intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFx5fJUR53II admit, I ended up "rage building" Turas.app over that weekend out of frustration with Google Docs so I did not look into other options like Wanderlog; I just knew what my wife and I needed based on how we organize our multi-day trips.Would love to get HN's feedback!

Users appreciate the app for its trip planning capabilities and flexibility in accommodating different planning styles. Some users note that the app borrows tags from TaskPaper and express a preference for plain text with graphical views. There are also inquiries about what users dislike about Wanderlog.

Users find Taskpaper trip notes difficult to view on a friend's computer and prefer a structured graphical view on mobile devices.

Tripnotes.ai: Intelligent Travel Planner

Hey HN,We're excited to announce the public beta preview of Tripnotes, an intelligent travel planner that mixes a custom recommendation engine, our own data, and a bit of GPT to help you find the right places to go while traveling. Our team has been working hard on this project for 6 months, and we're excited to finally share it with the HN community. With Tripnotes, you can keep track of all your notes about travel when planning to visit a city. Paste in article URLs, videos, emails, text messages, any other text, and if you need some help with research, ask our Concierge which will provide useful recommendations and itineraries for the city in question - with a fallback to GPT for things we didn't quite understand. If you're not ready to dive right in, here are a few short highlight videos:https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1619047755271536640https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1621172173598756864https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1623703548545445890https://twitter.com/matthewer/status/1638010661694234625All the places by Tripnotes are from our own database, but we rely upon GPT to understand the intent of the incoming prompts, as well as to help with the prose in our response to ensure the place descriptions fit what's being asked for.Since we tweeted about our preview release on Monday, we've had over 15,000 people come and try at least one prompt, with over 40,000 unique notes generated from prompts about cities all over the world. We'd love for you to give Tripnotes a try and let us know what you think. The "unauthed" version is open to everyone. If you're interested in using the full version, please join our waitlist. The full version maintains a history of your notes and allows you to edit the text and auto-highlights any text you write/paste in on the fly, which can be useful for pasting recommendations from friends (say via SMS or Email) and having them auto-highlighted and mapped. You can also paste in links from articles, websites, blogs, even Tiktok or Youtube. We scrape those urls, gather the list of places that are mentioned, and then show them on the map along side the rest of your note. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback, so please feel free to leave a comment or reach out to us directly. Thanks for your support!

The product is praised for its usefulness in travel planning and regular updates. However, users have reported errors in closures and descriptions, and there are concerns about the app siphoning data from phones.

Users raised concerns about the sources and updates of the database, reported errors in closures and descriptions, and expressed worries about the app siphoning all data from their phones.

Coordinating Trips Between Friends and Family

19 Feb 2024 Travel

I've been working on this project to simplify the organization done by one or two people to get a group of people to agree on a place to go that works with everyone's schedule.I've found in the past that email/text makes it tricky to get everyone to get a sense of the details of a trip, and also puts one person in the position to be persistent and spend a lot of time ensuring everyone's needs are met. This simple app attempts to ease that process and keep everyone in sync. It's similar to Troupe but aiming to focus on the basics of the upfront coordination rather than the activities/itinerary (at this point)Would love feedback and thoughts on the current state and where the best places to take it next are. It's a bit barebones at this point but more coming soon!Behind the scenes it uses flutter/firebase

Users reported issues with logging in, particularly with Google login on Chromium, though it works on Safari. Additionally, the app was described as clunky and unintuitive.

Users reported issues with Google login, including failures and the workflow not starting. Additionally, the app has an unintuitive workflow and forces account creation for invitations.

I made tool to plan your trips

09 Jul 2024 Travel

My second startup is a tool to help with traveling.I love traveling, but keeping everything organized can be a real headache. It's tough to remember flight times, hotel bookings, and daily plans. I used to struggle with messy notes and missed details.I looked for solutions, but nothing really worked for me. I used simple notes, but I always missed something when I tried to access them, like when I wanted to visit a place or eat somewhere. I even tried popular apps like "TripIt" to arrange all my trips, but the interface was too complex and had too many details to fill in.I wanted something where I could save all my dates, location names, and especially important notes like:Eat in the old cafe in Paris. Visit the river in Florence.Where I can fill in fields if I wanted or just leave them empty. That's why I made. It's a simple tool that helps you keep all your plan details in one place.Check it out, and let me know what you think!Happy travels!

TripPlanss is praised for simplifying travel organization and being easy to use. However, some users experience anxiety due to inconsistency in the tool's name.

Users criticized the tool for having inconsistent naming conventions, which caused confusion and hindered usability.

As someone who’d love to travel more at some point, I thought it’d be great to have a place where I can access all the information I’d need to just take a trip. It’s a community based platform so trips would be created, shared, and rated by the community.Would love to hear your feedback and suggestions. Thank you.

Ambulate – Detailed Trip Planning

22 Oct 2024 Travel

Ambulate was created because planning hiking trips using spreadsheets and various map solutions got chaotic. I wanted an app to manage and map multi day trip itineraries in the outdoors/backcountry.Features - Manage itineraries - Add activities and map markers - Add routes (upload GPX or plot by hand on map) - Desktop and mobileIt is free to try (login using Google or create a user). Alternatively the slides on the home page give an idea of the UI.I'll appreciate any thoughts and feedback you care to share:)

Users find trip planning for professionals challenging, especially with contingencies and booking steps. They suggest a single site for seamless booking and appreciate features like finding hotels with specific amenities. Issues with third-party sites like booking.com are noted, including billing problems and the need for direct booking. Users desire a simple UI, fast editing, and integration with other tools. Concerns about the product's name, mobile usability, and the need for more information before account creation are raised. Comparisons with other apps and the request for a demo account indicate a mixed reception with some expressing gratitude and others finding the product unusable on mobile or lacking in features.

Users criticize booking systems for poor transaction handling, difficult booking steps, and unreliable sites with inadequate customer support. There's a lack of incentives for direct bookings and third-party airline use, with centralization issues due to upselling. Specific complaints include unclear bathtub information on Booking.com, clunky interfaces, insufficient information, and poor mobile experiences. Some products are seen as too medical or have negative name associations. Users want demos, email verification, and better UI/UX, with some calling for open-source options. Outdated content and auto-advancing slides are also problematic.

Pineqone – A simple way to research and plan a trip

I get fed up with all the useless information that is posted on blogs, etc.So I decided to create a website which has everything one needs to plan a trip.I also created a Planner tool which lets users organize every step of their trips as easy as possible. The goal of the project is to help people research and plan their trips as easily as possible.I know this isn't the typical B2B SaaS that's usually posted here, but would love to get your thoughts!

I built a web app to open source travel itineraries

28 Mar 2024 Travel

I made TripGeeks, a website where you create and share travel itineraries. Would love to hear any feedback you might have. Thanks!

Users appreciate the app's concept for trip planning but suggest improvements such as clearer pricing symbols, better search functionality, and the addition of tags for different trip types. Some users find the term 'open source' confusing and debate its meaning, while others focus on the app's performance and user interface, suggesting features like map views and shareable itineraries. There's a mix of comparisons to other apps, requests for demo access without account creation, and a call for transparency regarding the app's source code. Feedback on the app's aesthetics and timing for personal trips is also positive.

Users criticized the product for irrelevant search results, particularly location mismatches, and poor ranking algorithms. The definition and use of 'open source' were frequently questioned, alongside concerns about unclear pricing and fee allocation. The user interface was deemed outdated, and the signup process confusing due to a lack of clarity and demo access. Performance issues were noted, as well as a lack of self-hosting options. Itineraries were criticized for being overly ambitious and unromantic. The product's mission and use of community resources were also challenged.
