Breakroom is an open-source, AI-native communication platform that ...

...lets companies run Slack-style internal chat and Discord-style public community channels inside one workspace. Every message, file and doc is automatically vector-indexed for semantic search, while built-in agents can be created in seconds—via code or a simple “/bot” prompt—to schedule releases, triage support or wire up new integrations. Deploy it yourself in Kubernetes, air-gapped, or use our managed cloud; swap in local open-weight models or plug your own API key. We sell enterprise hosting, SSO and compliance add-ons while the core remains Apache-2.0.

Idea type: Minimal Signal

There’s barely any market activity - either because the problem is very niche or not important enough. You’ll need to prove real demand exists before investing significant time.

Should You Build It?

Not yet, validate more.

Your are here

Breakroom is entering a market categorized by minimal signal, indicating a niche problem or a lack of widespread urgency. With only two similar products identified, confidence in market validation is low, and competition, while present, isn't fierce yet. Engagement, measured by the average number of comments on similar products, is also low. The absence of positive or negative 'use' and 'buy' signals suggests that existing solutions haven't garnered significant feedback, whether positive or negative. This could mean the market is nascent, or the messaging around existing products hasn't resonated with potential users. Given these signals, it's crucial to validate demand before heavily investing in Breakroom.

Recommendations

  1. Start by thoroughly engaging with potential customers in online communities, such as developer forums, open-source project groups, and even internal communication-focused subreddits, where your target audience—companies seeking Slack-style chat with Discord-like community channels—congregates. Actively participate, understand their current communication challenges, and gauge interest in a solution like Breakroom. Directly solicit feedback on the specific features, such as AI-powered semantic search and bot creation, to refine your value proposition based on real needs.
  2. Instead of immediately building out the entire Breakroom platform, offer to manually solve the internal and external communication challenges for 2-3 potential customers. This could involve setting up temporary chat solutions, integrating existing tools, or even creating custom bot workflows using readily available services. This hands-on approach will give you invaluable insights into their workflows, pain points, and willingness to pay for a comprehensive solution like Breakroom. Plus, this will help you understand the nuances and undocumented requirements.
  3. Develop a concise and engaging explainer video showcasing Breakroom's unique capabilities, particularly its AI-native features and open-source nature. Highlight the benefits of unified internal and external communication, semantic search, and easy bot creation. Track the video's completion rate to measure audience interest. If viewers drop off early, reassess the messaging and focus on the most compelling aspects of Breakroom, such as the ability to deploy on Kubernetes, air-gapped environments, or managed cloud.
  4. Create a waiting list for Breakroom, and ask for a small, non-refundable deposit to join. This isn't about generating revenue upfront; it's about gauging serious interest and commitment. Clearly communicate the value proposition of Breakroom—the unified communication platform, AI capabilities, and open-source flexibility. If potential users are willing to put down a small amount, it indicates a genuine need and a belief that Breakroom can solve their communication challenges. However, make sure you clearly state what they are paying for.
  5. Set a clear deadline. If you can't find 5 genuinely interested people in 3 weeks who are willing to pay a small deposit, it's a strong indicator that the demand for Breakroom is not yet validated. Reconsider the target market, features, or messaging. It might be necessary to pivot to a different problem within the communication space or to focus on a more specific niche where Breakroom's unique capabilities can address a critical need.
  6. Given the positive reception to the clean and simple frontend of similar products, prioritize user experience in Breakroom. Focus on creating an intuitive interface that is easy to navigate and use, especially for non-technical users. Iterate on the design based on user feedback to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.
  7. Considering the discussion around integrating multiple messaging platforms into one place, carefully evaluate which integrations are most important to your target audience. Focus on integrating the platforms that are most widely used by your potential customers to provide the most value. Be strategic about which integrations you support early on, based on user demand and technical feasibility.

Questions

  1. Given the open-source nature of Breakroom, what is your strategy for building a sustainable business model beyond enterprise hosting and compliance add-ons? How will you incentivize contributions from the open-source community while protecting your core intellectual property?
  2. Considering the AI-native features of Breakroom, how do you plan to address potential concerns around data privacy, security, and algorithmic bias? What measures will you take to ensure that the AI-powered features are transparent, ethical, and compliant with relevant regulations?
  3. How will you differentiate Breakroom from established communication platforms like Slack and Discord, especially in terms of features, pricing, and target market? What specific niche or use case will Breakroom focus on to gain a competitive advantage and build a loyal user base?

  • Confidence: Low
    • Number of similar products: 2
  • Engagement: Low
    • Average number of comments: 2

    • Negative use signal: 0.0%
  • Net buy signal: 0.0%
    • Positive buy signal: 0.0%
    • Negative buy signal: 0.0%

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

BreakRoom, draft messages/documents using the information in your files

Hi HN! BreakRoom is a tool that lets you upload files, then uses the information in them to draft messages, responses, and other types of documents.I felt like existing AI tools require careful prompting to get usable results, making them hard to use for less tech/AI savvy users. I built BreakRoom to let users get usable results with very little prompt engineering — it uses information from your repository of files when relevant, and has a pre-written set of chain-of-thought prompts for each use-case.Full transparency, I wanted to build a tool that did all this directly within a Gmail inbox, but Google’s new security audit requirement for sensitive scopes was a barrier to entry. I figured I’d build something quick and dirty to validate usefulness and iterate first. I wanted people to have a little fun with it too so check out the "After Hours" toggle on the top right :)Thank you to anyone that uses BreakRoom and/or provides feedback. Thanks!Ashwin

Users appreciate the clean and simple frontend, which enhances the user experience. The retro feel is also well-received, with some users planning to add the product to their toolkit. Overall, the feedback is very positive.

A tool that improves cross-platform communication for teams

27 Jan 2023 Messaging

Hey there,I created a new startup, and i'd like to have your feedback about it.I've been using many messaging platforms: Slack, Teams, Discord, telegram… And it's a nightmare to manage. So I created my solution where you can have all your chat in one place. For example, you use your favorite chat tool, and your partners, customers, and agencies use their tools - we support Slack, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Discord, WhatsApp, or Text Message (SMS).My first clients use StartADAM for a variety of purposes:- External collaboration: bring service providers, clients, vendors, agencies, and external firms into your Slack team from any tool they prefer- Enterprise: let different teams chat from their preferred & highest-performing chat app (e.g. Sales teams use Microsoft Teams while Product squads use Slack)- Freelancing: use one chat app to interact with all clients- Sales: bond with customers & stay organizedWe're on a freemium model, so you can test it for free and let me know what you think about it!

Startup integrates multiple messaging platforms into one place.
