Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

Your idea for a party playlist system where people can queue up songs together falls into the 'Freemium' category. This means similar products are well-liked, but users often resist paying for them. With 11 similar products already out there, the competition is significant. Engagement for these types of apps is medium, averaging around 4 comments per product launch. Given the landscape, you will need to find a segment of users who are willing to pay for a premium version of the product, or you have to create additional value in your offer to make the economics of your product work. Focus on features that make the experience so much better that users are willing to pay to have them. Think through differentiation and monetization from day one.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by deeply understanding which users derive the most value from the free version of your party playlist system. Are they casual users at small gatherings, or frequent users at larger events? This understanding will inform your premium feature development.
  2. Develop premium features that significantly enhance the experience for those power users. This could include advanced queue management, DJ-style controls, ad-free listening, higher quality audio streaming, or integrations with professional sound systems.
  3. Instead of focusing solely on individual users, consider offering team or venue-based subscriptions. For example, bars, clubs, or event organizers might be willing to pay for a system that streamlines their music management and enhances the customer experience. This also aligns with the 'should you build it' recommendation to think about differentiation and monetization.
  4. Offer personalized setup assistance or music curation consulting services, especially for venues or larger events. This could be a high-value add-on that justifies a premium price point.
  5. Before committing to a pricing strategy, test different approaches with small user groups. Experiment with tiered pricing based on features or usage, or offer limited-time promotions to gauge interest and price sensitivity.
  6. Based on feedback from similar products, implement a robust voting system (upvotes/downvotes) to ensure music satisfaction and prevent unwanted songs from dominating the queue. This addresses the criticism that some apps don't match users' music tastes.
  7. Carefully consider the name of your app. 'Jamocracy' was criticized for sounding unprofessional. Choose a name that is memorable, relevant, and reflects the app's functionality and target audience.
  8. Prioritize ease of use and a smooth onboarding experience. Address the criticism that some users found similar apps confusing to set up by providing clear instructions and intuitive connection processes.
  9. Consider adding a 'skip song' feature, which was a suggestion from users of similar platforms. This gives users more control over the playlist and enhances the overall experience.
  10. Integrate with popular music streaming services like Spotify to avoid the need to recreate existing playlists and ensure a wide selection of available music. This aligns with user feedback that Spotify integration is a significant plus.

Questions

  1. What specific pain points do current party playlist systems fail to address, and how can your app uniquely solve those problems to justify a premium offering?
  2. Beyond basic music queuing, what unique social or interactive features could you incorporate to enhance the party atmosphere and drive engagement, and potentially make it monetizable?
  3. What are the legal and licensing considerations for a collaborative music platform, and how will you ensure compliance to avoid potential copyright issues?

Collaborative Spotify Queue with upvotes and downvotes

01 Nov 2023 Music

Hey all, I created http://cueued.com that works as a remote for a collaborative spotify queue where the users can upvote and downvote music they want to hear next.Only the person who is playing the music needs to have spotify premium! And if you're far from your friends (and have premium) and want to listen together, you can go to the settings and click Connect to Room, and you all can listen to the same music remotely.Let me know what y'all think about it, and any improvements as well. And if anyone's interested in how I built it let me know as well.

The HN title initially read 'shopify', but the issue was fixed and thanks were given.
