Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

You're entering a "Freemium" market with your reel maker tool, designed to help musicians showcase their work. The good news is that there are 6 similar products out there, so there's a proven need. This gives us high confidence that you're in the right general area, but the higher number of similar products also means more competition. These products also enjoy high engagement, measured by number of comments. The challenge, as with all freemium products, will be convincing users to pay for premium features. People love free stuff, but the idea category description says that they resist paying for it. A key insight from similar product launches is to focus on ease of use and efficiency.

Recommendations

  1. Start by identifying the core features that would be most valuable to your target users (composers, musicians). Since this idea category is called Freemium, focus on a "free" version first.
  2. Based on feedback from similar tools, prioritize ease of use and time-saving features. Think about how to make the process of creating reels as efficient as possible for musicians showcasing their work to potential employers. For example, the YClipper reviews praised its ease of use, so that's a great model to follow.
  3. Offer a free tier with basic functionality, and then create premium features that cater to power users or teams. This could include advanced editing tools, collaboration features, or expanded storage. Also, in line with the idea category description, think hard about who is most likely to pay. Is it individual musicians? Or agencies?
  4. Explore charging teams or agencies for access to the tool, rather than individual musicians. A team-based pricing model can be more sustainable and offer more value to larger organizations. This approach fits well within the 'Freemium' model, where individual users might be hesitant to pay, but organizations see the value in a paid solution.
  5. Consider offering personalized help or consulting services to musicians who need assistance creating compelling reels. This could be a separate revenue stream or bundled with premium features. Also, consider that similar product launches asked about VST Plugins to integrate into DAWs like Ableton or Logic. That might be a natural upsell as well.
  6. Test different pricing approaches with small groups of users to see what resonates best. Gather feedback on the value they perceive in the premium features and adjust your pricing accordingly. Don't be afraid to experiment to see what works best.
  7. Actively seek user feedback and incorporate it into your product development roadmap. The high engagement observed in similar products suggests users are eager to provide input and help shape the tool's evolution. For example, one product was criticized for not being mobile-friendly. Make sure you cover your bases and listen to your users.

Questions

  1. What are the most common pain points musicians face when creating reels to showcase their work, and how can your tool specifically address those challenges?
  2. Beyond the core reel-making functionality, what additional value-added services or features could you offer to justify a premium price point and attract paying customers?
  3. How will you differentiate your reel maker from existing video editing tools and ensure it stands out in a crowded market, given the high number of similar products?

I made an app that uses the device's screen recorder to render videos

01 Aug 2024 Video

I built this music visualizer app that helps artists create content to promote their new songs. When building it, I realized that I could let users render and export video through screen recording instead of using FFMPEG or creating the video server-side. I wonder if there are other applications for this little hack. It works well for this specific use case, but there are probably other uses as well. It has made the app about 10x simpler to build and maintain than it would otherwise.

Looks great, iOS only, would be great webapp
