Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

Creating an app for organizing tennis tournaments places you in a competitive but viable market. We found 7 similar products, indicating a good level of interest, but also the need for strong differentiation. The average engagement for these types of products is medium (4 comments), so there is interest in the sports-organizing niche, but it may take time and effort to gain traction. Given the 'Freemium' category, you'll likely face challenges in getting users to pay, so figuring out your monetization strategy early is critical. Many people are happy to use the free versions of similar products, so you need to create additional value to convert them to paying customers. Focus on features that solve specific pain points for organizers and players, as people are generally frustrated with currently available apps.

Recommendations

  1. Given the 'Freemium' categorization, start by deeply understanding which users derive the MOST value from the free version of your tennis tournament app. Are they tournament organizers, casual players, or specific age groups? Knowing this allows you to tailor premium features to their needs.
  2. Develop premium features that directly address the pain points of those high-value free users. For instance, if tournament organizers find scheduling difficult, offer advanced scheduling tools, bracket generation, or automated communication features in the premium version, like real-time notifications.
  3. Explore charging teams or clubs instead of individual players. A club subscription could unlock premium features for all its members, offering a more sustainable revenue model. Consider volume discounts to incentivize larger organizations.
  4. Offer personalized support or consulting services for larger tournaments or organizations. This could include on-site assistance, custom branding, or priority support, which can be a high-value offering that justifies a premium price, as well as potential partnership opportunities.
  5. Implement A/B testing on different pricing models and feature sets with small user groups. Test different price points, subscription durations, and feature bundles to identify the most effective combination for driving conversions.
  6. Focus on sports diversity based on user feedback. OutyPlay received positive feedback, with some users requesting the inclusion of Rugby and Touch Rugby within the application. Consider adding other sports or activities to increase the app's appeal.
  7. Improve the user experience with features like real-time notifications and bracket updates, as requested by Tourminator users. Consider adding these features to enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

Questions

  1. What specific, underserved needs of tennis tournament organizers can your app uniquely address to compel them to upgrade to a paid version?
  2. How can you leverage the social aspect of tennis (e.g., team play, rivalries) to incentivize users to invite others and grow your user base organically?
  3. Given the challenge of converting free users to paid, what innovative monetization strategies, beyond feature gating, can you implement (e.g., partnerships, sponsorships, data analytics for organizers)?

Open-Source Tournament System

18 Feb 2024 GitHub

Over the last year, I developed a tournament system (Bracket). Most (if not all) tournament systems available online are paid and ask tons of money (a typical minimum subscription costs 50 euros per month, and go up to 500 euros per month or so), which is not feasible for many small sport clubs/individuals. So I developed my own system and put it publicly on GitHub.I made this tournament system for my badminton club and hosted three tournaments successfully. It features flexible setups, where a tournament can have multiple stages and each stage can have multiple "items" (round robin, single elimination or swiss).Backend is written in async Python with FastAPI and frontend in Next.js with the great Mantine library.I would appreciate some feedback.GitHub: https://github.com/evroon/bracketDemo: https://www.bracketapp.nl/demoDocs: https://docs.bracketapp.nl

Find and match with people playing sports around you – Courtship

04 Dec 2024 Android Sports Dating

Hi friends, have you ever found it frustrating to match with people to play sports on the current apps? I certainly did! Using the tennis apps on the market was such a laborious task that I decided to create something better — a platform where you can quickly and easily find people to play your favorite sports with, whether near your home or while traveling to a new city.

The product is a sports matching platform, but the name may misleadingly suggest dating or intimacy.

Users find the current apps frustrating and laborious to use. Additionally, the name of the product suggests dating and intimacy, which may not align with its intended purpose.
