Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea of uploading a file to get a code for downloading falls into a crowded space. We've seen 12 similar products, placing it in a highly competitive category. These types of products tend to be considered "Swamp", which means the market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Engagement is low, with similar products averaging just 2 comments each. While we don't have specific 'use' or 'buy' signals from the data, the sheer number of competitors suggests it's difficult to stand out and capture significant user attention in this area. Given the 'Swamp' category, unless you can pinpoint a way to offer something radically different, prepare for an uphill battle. Most products in this category fail to gain traction.

Recommendations

  1. First and foremost, deeply research why existing file-sharing solutions with code access haven't resonated with users. What are their pain points? What's missing? Focus on finding unmet needs before building anything.
  2. If you still want to proceed, identify a niche audience that's currently underserved by existing file sharing solutions. This could be a specific industry (e.g., designers needing to share large creative files) or a user group with specific privacy concerns (e.g., lawyers sharing sensitive documents). Specialization is key.
  3. Consider creating add-ons or plugins for existing popular file storage providers (like Google Drive or Dropbox) that add the code-based access feature. This could be a less risky way to test the market and validate the need for your specific approach.
  4. Explore related problems. Are there frustrations around file versioning, collaboration workflows, or secure access controls that could be more promising avenues for innovation? Look adjacent to the core 'upload and get code' functionality.
  5. Based on the similar product discussions, address security concerns head-on. Clearly communicate your data encryption methods, storage policies, and DMCA compliance procedures. Transparency is crucial for building trust. Refer to the criticism of 'Upload your PDF and get a shareable link' regarding security and data privacy to build trust.
  6. Carefully consider the user experience, especially regarding readability. The feedback on 'FliQR' highlights the importance of font choices and contrast. Ensure your interface is clean, intuitive, and accessible.
  7. Since a common criticism revolved around the lack of a DMCA process and potential data collection, ensure you address these points by implementing a clear and transparent process. Make sure you also explain your data collection to users.

Questions

  1. What fundamental problem are you solving that isn't already adequately addressed by existing file-sharing services? What is your unfair advantage?
  2. How will you ensure the long-term sustainability of your service, especially concerning storage costs and the potential for abuse (illegal content, data leaks)?
  3. How will you differentiate yourself from established players like WeTransfer or Dropbox, not just in terms of features, but also in terms of user experience and trust?

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Upload your PDF and get a shareable link

11 Jul 2024 Productivity

Users appreciate the idea and implementation of the product but express significant privacy and security concerns, including potential abuse for illegal content, personal data leaks, and SQL injection vulnerabilities. There's skepticism about the sustainability of its free service model and storage costs. Some users compare it favorably to WeTransfer for in-browser viewing, but others question its advantages. The lack of a DMCA process and suspicions of data collection are also mentioned.

Users expressed discomfort with uploading personal information and exposing PII, alongside concerns about the lack of a DMCA process and potential data collection attempts. Questions about the project's sustainability if it remains free were raised, as well as doubts about its benefit over alternatives like WeTransfer. Technical issues noted include being limited to PDFs, file ID leaks upon upload, SQL injection vulnerabilities, and the requirement for correct MIME type settings. There's also skepticism about the service's longevity and the deletion of an example PDF, which undermines the promise of being free.

Browser-side encrypted file uploads

11 Jan 2024 Developer Tools

After developing a client-side encryption plugin for the Uppy uploader (https://github.com/0sumcode/uppy-encrypt), I created a proof of concept web app that encrypts files before upload (and decrypts them after download). There are other solutions like this, but I wanted one that was simple, fast, and open-source (https://github.com/0sumcode/0up) so others can adapt it for any projects that could benefit from it. I hope some folks find the service and/or code helpful!

Dropbox-like file requests for free using Google Drive

23 Mar 2023 Storage

Hello! Using this Google App Script code makes it possible to do file requests (even anonymous ones) using Google Drive. The implementation provided uses user input to create folders within a specified folder but you can remove that feature pretty easily for anonymous uploads.I've limited it to 100MB transfers but you can also remove that and test the limits for yourself. I've successfully done up to 200MB at one time which is pretty huge for being absolutely free and customizable. Thanks!

Google App Script for anonymous Google Drive file requests.

ReleaseZip – release and share zip files via .zip domain

As Google recently released the new .zip top level domain, it is valid to enter some "zip filename" to the address bar. I wonder it might serve as a more intuisive way to release and share zip files, so I developed a tiny website "ReleaseZip" to show the idea.It is very simple -- upload a zip file (yourfile.zip), and you can instantly access it through yourfile.released.zip (copy & paste it to the address bar in your browser). That's it.You can even use it in command line, type> curl -LF file=@yourfile.zip releasezip.comand then you can access it anywhere by> curl -JLO yourfile.released.zipAs an experimental project, only file < 1MB is supported yet and the file may not be permanently storaged. Please just use it for fun :)
