Hi everyoneAbout a year ago I was travelling to Mexico for a trip and forgot to cancel my Duolingo trial (because of course I did), so accidentally committed myself to learning Spanish badly. My Spanish-speaking partner noticed that I'd been learning a slightly more latin version so it was a good thing I was going to Mexico, but it got me thinking: most translation apps/phrasebooks are one language-to-another language without much consideration for local dialects.I'd been wanting to mess about and build a little side project so made an early prototype of a city-specific translation app using the GPT-4 API. After poking around the App Store I realised that the travel category was so saturated with AI-generated itinerary planners or tour guide resellers.So one thing led to another and I decided to start from scratch and build an AI-augmented city guide app: Waywise. The idea being that I don't really want to "recommend" anything as such; I just want to surface useful information for travellers that will allow them to explore a city in their own way.Some of the features:Transport information - Detailed guides on airports and how to get into the city centre. Train and bus station and local public transit information.Local language: Translations, colloquialisms, and a comprehensive phrasebook for all major spoken languages in the city.Currency tips: Information on cash, cashless payments, stored value cards, tipping etiquette and a currency conversion tool.Neighbourhood insights: Find the best places to stay, shop, party and explore the sights.*Currently there are a handful of cities that I've verified the information for which are purchasable and downloadable for a one-off fee (all future updates included too), and the remainder are AI-generated. If there isn't a city guide available, subscribers can generate one for almost any city with a population of over 100,000.There's scope to do lots more and I've been squeezing this in between client work so it's taken me the best part of a year to finally get out the door but any feedback would be super useful!Cheers :)

Hi HN,I've made an app for language learning with spaced repetition flashcards. It takes the all of the features that I've liked from other language learning apps, removes the ones I've disliked and puts them into one package.- Cloze cards: Ich habe einen _____ (dog). - These types of cards work much better for more advanced words without 1:1 translations. - Spaced repetition is fully adjustable - Most other apps would force me to use their fixed intervals. :( - Words from content - My favorite way of learning is by watching YouTube videos in my target language, so I've added a youtube (and website) viewer to the app. - Audio, images - Each card gets AI generated image and audio. - Fast - To practice a card, you just tap it and swipe left/right. I was getting frustrated with childish exercises other apps were forcing me to do. - No gamification - Yes, that's a feature. :D - Aimed at advanced learners - A lot of apps end at B1 level (2000-3000), whereas to understand a language comfortably you need around 10 000 words, so the app aims at people who want to learn the final 7 000 words. - Words are grouped correctly - The conjugations - gehen, gehe, geht, gehst... are all considered to be the same word. Surprisingly uncommon in the language learning app space.Would love to hear your feedback!Petr

I created this browser extension and mobile app to look up unfamiliar foreign words and learn them as flashcards on my mobile device.There are multiple solutions to do that, but my itch was that all the solutions make it difficult to create a high-quality flashcard: - nouns have to be saved as singulars - verbs have to be saved as infinitives - each word has to have a descriptionWorks well (at least for the Dutch language). I have created around 900 cards, primarily good out of the box.What do you guys think about it?

Natively I speak Norwegian, and English when I travel.Benefits = I get to practice A LOT of English Downsides = I feel like I am losing Norwegian words.I spend a lot of time working on my computer and I wanted an easy way to build vocabulary. The result: AtomicVocabBuild your vocabulary in English and Norwegian, straight in your browser! The words chosen are the more uncommon words that still can be used to communicate your ideas better.Would love to hear your feedback!

Glossarie – a new, immersive way to learn a language

Hi HN, For over two years I've been working on an App to learn languages (currently French, Italian and Spanish), together with my partner, a language teacher. I think it is finally ready to share with this community!The idea is to introduce vocabulary and grammar whilst you read eBooks in your own language. I've found that it is easier to remember vocabulary 'in context' and with regular repetition. Plus you don't have to carve out dedicated time for language learning. Other apps require you to build a habit around various exercises or ‘games’, whereas lots of people already read books.From testing with early users so far it's proving effective for building a basic understanding of a language and quickly getting to the point where you can read and broadly understand text in the target language. It’s even better in combination with other apps that help with listening/speaking like Pimsleur.There were lots of technical challenges making this. It turned out to be (reassuringly) hard to get accuracy to an acceptable level, requiring a rabbit-hole into machine translation. There was a lot of testing required to optimise the engine that chooses the translations to show and to reduce the friction when reading books. And the backend to support uploading books is a beast in itself. I’d love to share details if there is interest.Roadmap- Accuracy - 100% accuracy is the target, but at present there can be errors. Feedback from users will be important here so that accuracy issues can be generalised and solved at scale. Errors can be reported within the app - please do so if you spot anything!- Dynamic difficulty - rather than have a progression of difficulty levels I’d prefer to introduce vocabulary and grammar automatically in response to user progress, balancing against the friction of seeing unfamiliar words. There’s a lot ‘under the hood’ to manage this today, but plenty of room to improve.- More practice features - to reinforce vocabulary/grammar and support writing, listening and speaking.- Better eBook support - improving the formatting of eBooks within the app and providing more methods for finding good books to read.Use of AI- LLMs provided a step change in accuracy and have enabled a feature that explains translations and grammar to the user- vastly improving the utility versus a year ago.- I believe apps like this, which use AI to enhance or scale functionality rather than simply acting as a wrapper over APIs, will be the major beneficiaries as LLMs improve.Take a look, and let me know your thoughts or questions!
