fitness tracker that uses AI to suggest well-rounded workout plans

Confidence
Engagement
Net use signal
Net buy signal

Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

The market for AI-powered fitness trackers is becoming increasingly crowded, with 23 similar products already identified. This indicates a high level of competition but also validates the interest in this area. The engagement level, measured by the average number of comments, is medium, suggesting a decent level of user interaction with existing products. However, there's a notable absence of strong buy or use signals from these similar products; most users are hesitant to pay for these apps. You're entering a freemium market, which means many users are happy with free versions, and convincing them to upgrade will be challenging. Differentiation and a clear monetization strategy are crucial for success. You'll need to demonstrate how your AI provides unique value that warrants a premium subscription, as seen in the criticisms from products, where users question the actual AI improvement over existing workflows.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by identifying the specific user segment that benefits the most from free access to your fitness tracker. This could be beginners, people who are tracking basic stats, or certain age groups. Understanding who loves the free version will help tailor premium features to entice them to convert.
  2. Develop premium features that significantly enhance the experience for those high-value free users. This could include truly personalized workout plans based on AI analysis of their performance and goals, advanced progress tracking, integration with wearables for real-time feedback, or injury prevention recommendations. Consider the need for form analysis in your features, as identified in Dumbbell AI criticism.
  3. Explore charging teams or groups (e.g., corporate wellness programs, sports teams) instead of individual users. Businesses may be more willing to pay for solutions that improve employee health and productivity. Consider integrating features that promote team challenges and social support, as seen in the positive comments for Fit.AI.
  4. Offer personalized help or consulting as part of a premium tier. This could include one-on-one coaching sessions with certified trainers who use the AI data to provide tailored advice. This human element can address the concerns raised about the lack of human touch in fully automated fitness apps.
  5. Implement A/B testing with small user groups to experiment with different pricing models and feature bundles. This will help you optimize your monetization strategy and identify the most appealing offers. For example, some users may want to pay for ad-free experience, while others may not.
  6. Address the feedback from similar products regarding seamless integration with a variety of fitness trackers and equipment (Fit.AI criticism). Supporting more devices will increase your appeal to a wider audience. Prioritize the most popular ones initially.
  7. Consider adding video tutorials for exercises, as requested by users of Workout Tools. This can help users perform exercises correctly and safely, improving their overall experience and reducing the risk of injury. Make sure to include beginner modules too, as suggested by the Dumbbell AI launch.
  8. Provide transparency about how your AI works and the data it collects, as privacy concerns were raised in the Dumbbell AI launch. Clearly communicate your data privacy policies to build trust with your users.

Questions

  1. What specific data points will your AI use to create 'well-rounded' workout plans that differentiate your product from existing fitness apps, and how will you ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of these AI-generated plans in preventing injuries?
  2. Given the freemium nature of the market and the lack of strong 'buy' signals for similar products, what are the key premium features that you believe will be most compelling to users and how will you effectively communicate the value of these features to drive conversions?
  3. Considering the common criticism that AI-powered fitness apps lack a human touch, how will you balance the use of AI with personalized support and guidance to create a more engaging and effective user experience?

AI coach for runners using reinforcement learning

I have been experimenting with deep reinforcement learning since watching the DeepMind lecture series on YouTube a while back.I'm also an obsessive runner, so I figured a good first project to build would be an AI coach for runners. What started out small... quickly turned into something big.I've been using it myself for a couple of months and been tweaking it continuously. Feeding it new and improved data sets. I think for most normal runners (beginner -> immediate -> advanced) it works pretty well. It might be completely off if you're an elite runner. But I decided it's good enough to release to the world. So I'm launching it as an app for iPhone and Apple Watch (free for now). Would love to get some feedback from other runners.
