Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market for motivational quote apps, indicated by the high number of similar products (23), which categorizes your idea into the 'Swamp' category. This means you'll face significant competition, and many similar apps have already been launched without substantial success. The engagement level is low (avg 2 comments), suggesting that these apps don't generate much user interaction. There are many motivational quote apps out there, so it is difficult to stand out. To succeed you'll need a strategy for how to stand out in the market, or you should look into another idea. The widget is potentially a differentiating feature, but this alone won't guarantee success, especially if the core app isn't compelling or lacks unique content. While the other apps are having positive reviews in general, some users are asking for offline functionality, quote-sharing features and an Android version.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly research existing motivational quote apps to understand why they haven't achieved widespread popularity. Identify their shortcomings and unmet user needs to find opportunities for differentiation. Given the 'Swamp' category, understanding the failures of past attempts is critical before investing further.
  2. Instead of broadly targeting all users, identify a specific niche or underserved group within the motivational content space. For example, you could focus on quotes tailored to specific professions, hobbies, or life stages. Addressing a specific audience can make your app more relevant and appealing.
  3. Before investing in a full app build, test the widget concept independently. Create a simple prototype or mock-up of the widget and gather feedback from potential users. Validate whether the widget truly enhances the user experience and adds unique value. Consider using A/B testing to see which quotes resonate best.
  4. Explore building tools or content for existing motivational platforms or providers rather than directly competing with them. This could involve creating quote packs, themes, or integrations for popular productivity or mindfulness apps. Partnering with established players can provide a faster route to market.
  5. Given the feedback from similar apps, consider incorporating offline functionality, quote-sharing features, and ensuring compatibility with both iOS and Android platforms. Addressing these common requests can improve user satisfaction and broaden your app's reach.
  6. Explore adjacent problems related to motivation or personal development that may be more promising than a general quote app. For example, you could focus on tools for habit tracking, goal setting, or mindfulness exercises. Expanding the scope can create a more comprehensive and valuable product.
  7. Consider how you can leverage social media in your app design, given that similar apps have been suggested to integrate with social media platforms. Determine if you should include social media integration and how to implement it in the app.

Questions

  1. What specific problem does your motivational quote app solve that existing apps don't? How will your app provide unique and tangible value to users beyond simply displaying quotes?
  2. Considering the low engagement levels of similar apps, what specific strategies will you implement to drive user interaction, retention, and long-term value? How will you keep users coming back to your app daily?
  3. How will you ensure the quality and authenticity of the quotes featured in your app, given that users of similar apps have questioned content origin? What steps will you take to curate content that is both accurate and inspiring?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

I made an iOS app that puts motivating quotes in your widgets

16 Sep 2024 Productivity

Hey HN,I love a good daily quote for motivation and inspiration so I made this app to submit to a hackathon. It has a quote library with thousands of quotes that you can browse and save, then turn into pretty word art using a fun little editor. Once you have a cool design you can set them as iOS widgets, export as wallpapers, social posts etc.It also has a quote of the day feature that will send a curated quote as a notification on a schedule of your choosing. All SwiftUI, Firebase, usual indie iOS stack. It's fun to use and can feed you a daily dose of motivation when you need it.Launching on Product Hunt today too if you want to support: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/quotable-3Thanks all, Jack

Quoter – Daily Inspirational Quotes App

20 May 2024 Android

I've been working on an app called Quoter, designed to deliver daily inspirational quotes from renowned authors and thinkers. With Quoter, you can swipe right to like a quote or left to dislike it, making it easy to engage with content that resonates with you. You can save your favorite quotes and organize them into custom collections. Registered users can also add their own quotes. Sharing quotes with friends or on social media is straightforward. Plus, registered users can back up their quotes to keep them safe, even if you reinstall the app.I created Quoter because I wanted a simple, customizable way to get daily inspiration. There are a lot of quote apps out there, but I felt they lacked interactive features and user-friendly design. Quoter introduces a swipe feature, adding a playful element to the browsing experience. The focus on simplicity ensures that using Quoter is straightforward and intuitive.Quoter is currently available in the USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, UK, and New Zealand. You can download it on iOS:https://apps.apple.com/us/app/quoter-daily-inspiration/id647...and Android:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alexfeller...I'd love to get your feedback and hear any suggestions for improvement. Thanks!
