Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space with your one-time secret sharing idea. We found 18 similar products, indicating significant competition. The market for secure message sharing exists, but it's also a 'Swamp' – meaning many existing solutions are mediocre and struggle to gain traction. Engagement for similar products is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. There's no clear positive signal for people wanting to use or buy these types of services. To succeed, you'll need a truly unique approach that addresses the shortcomings of existing solutions and resonates with a specific user base.

Recommendations

  1. First, dive deep into why existing solutions haven't taken off. What are users complaining about? Where do current products fall short in terms of usability, security, or specific use cases? Based on the competitive analysis of similar products, security concerns and insecure sharing of sensitive information seem to be a recurring theme. Understanding these failures is crucial before investing further.
  2. If you decide to move forward, identify a niche group of users with very specific needs not currently being met. Is it developers sharing API keys? Lawyers sharing confidential documents? Tailoring to a specific use case allows you to focus your development and marketing efforts and create a product that truly resonates. For example, consider how 'Secret Sharer' was appreciated for its secure communication features, but a user suggested incorporating usage metrics.
  3. Consider building tools for existing communication platforms (e.g., Slack, Teams) instead of creating a standalone app. Can you create a plugin or integration that offers one-time secret sharing within the tools people already use? This could lower the barrier to entry and increase adoption. However, be aware of concerns over sharing secrets via Slack and email as highlighted with 'Private Passage'.
  4. Before committing to this idea, explore adjacent problems that might be more promising. Are there related security or privacy issues that could be addressed with a different approach? Don't be afraid to pivot if you find a more compelling opportunity. The comments about fake chrome store reviews on similar products could be indicative of the challenges you might face.
  5. Given the 'Swamp' category and the lack of strong user signals, it might be wise to conserve your resources and focus on a different project. Only proceed if you can identify a clear unmet need and a significantly better solution than what's already available.
  6. Explore implementing end-to-end encryption. Several similar products highlight the importance of security, but also raise concerns about potential misuse arising from leaked short-term keys. This is clearly a critical aspect that needs a robust solution.

Questions

  1. What are the top three pain points users experience with existing secure messaging or secret sharing tools, and how does your solution definitively solve them in a way that competitors don't?
  2. What specific security measures, beyond end-to-end encryption, will you implement to prevent misuse and ensure the confidentiality of shared secrets, addressing concerns raised by users of similar products?
  3. How will you validate that your chosen niche market is large enough to sustain a viable business, and what are your customer acquisition strategies for reaching this specific audience?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Private Passage – Real-Time, Encrypted Secret Sharing

16 Jan 2023 Privacy

I made this because I've seen too many secrets (API keys, passwords, private keys) shared via Slack and MS Teams etc. I've even had a private API key or two in my gmail inbox because someone DM'd it when I wasn't there. I know some password managers make sharing secrets fairly easy, but I'm often working with clients who don't use the same tools and need a secure way to get .env files and such.Questions and feedback are welcome! https://github.com/danielfone/private-passage

Concern over sharing secrets via Slack and email.
