Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Creating portfolio websites and case study templates for UX designers puts you in a crowded space. Our analysis found 27 similar products, indicating high competition. The 'Swamp' category fits because many existing solutions in this space are mediocre, and users don't love them. Engagement is low, with similar products averaging only 2 comments. This suggests it's hard to stand out. Given this context, it's crucial to offer something fundamentally different to avoid struggling for attention and revenue. You need to differentiate yourself from the existing solutions to succeed.

Recommendations

  1. Start by thoroughly researching why existing portfolio website solutions haven’t fully satisfied UX designers. What are the common pain points, frustrations, and unmet needs? The criticism summaries from similar products mention limitations in customization, time-consuming processes, and steep learning curves. Focus your research on understanding these issues deeply.
  2. If you decide to proceed, identify a specific niche or group of UX designers who are underserved by current portfolio solutions. For example, are you targeting junior designers, designers with a specific style, or those with unique project requirements? Tailoring your solution to a specific audience can help you stand out.
  3. Consider building tools or integrations for existing portfolio platforms rather than creating a completely new platform. This could involve creating a plugin for a popular website builder or a set of case study templates for a specific design tool. This approach would let you leverage existing user bases.
  4. If creating a new platform, focus on truly novel features. MyDevPage was praised for its simplicity and customization, while Portfolio2me gained traction with its gamified approach. What can you offer that is entirely new?
  5. Based on the discussions in similar products, many users seek inspiration for portfolio design. Creating a resource that provides inspiration and examples could be a valuable addition to your platform. Allow users to filter examples by design specialization to improve navigation, as suggested in the feedback for 'Portfolio Design Inspiration'.
  6. Since 'MyDevPage' got feedback that building pages was too time-consuming, focus on streamlining the template creation process. Offer pre-built sections and drag-and-drop functionality to speed up the build process.
  7. Incorporate security measures and clearly communicate them to your users. Portfolio2me received criticism for lacking security explanations. Address security concerns proactively to build trust with your users.

Questions

  1. What is the one core feature that your platform offers that no other portfolio website builder for UX designers can match?
  2. How will you acquire your first 100 paying customers, and what is your strategy for ensuring they have a successful experience that they can share with others?
  3. Given the low engagement seen with similar products, what specific marketing strategies will you employ to generate interest and engagement with your target audience of UX designers?

I made a UX/UI design portfolio component library using Framer

Hi everyone, I'm a UX & UI designer.I built a Framer component library that may be helpful to UX & UI designers trying to create their portfolio.Problem: When looking to build my own UX/UI design portfolio, I was frustrated with the restrictive nature and lack of customisation that some of the other portfolio builders offered. I felt as if none of these platforms allowed me to showcase my work and personality the way I wanted to. I also didn’t have the time required to create a portfolio from scratch.- Limited customisation options - Time consuming - Steep learning curves - Limited case study optionsSolution: I created Profolio because I knew other designers would be experiencing similar issues and I wanted to help create a better solution. With Profolio my goal was to make it as easy and time-efficient as possible for UX & UI designers to create a custom portfolio that showcases their skills, experience and personality so that it gives them everything they need to land a design job.- 90+ unstyled Framer portfolio components - 30+ components to build case studies - Mockups, UX/ UI deliverables & wireframe templates - Unlimited customisation - Minimal learning curveWould love any feedback, thanks

Created Profolio for customizable UX/UI design portfolios.

Limited customisation, time consuming, steep learning curves.

I made portfolio builder to create a portfolio in a few clicks

06 Aug 2024 Productivity

As a solopreneur I'm around freelancers, just a lot of my freelancer friends have been writing to me to see if I could do a web portfolio for them, saying that they don't have much time to do it and that they need it fast so they can put their work and experience on there and send it to (future) jobs. They were in a hurry because they wanted to join some freelance groups or get a job but they wanted to see a portfolio everywhere. So I was looking for a way to create something easy to use, where a freelancers can write their experience, projects, about me text and add some social links thanks to in build cms and optimally keep it simple and time saving. But at the same time I knew I had to do at least some customizability because not everyone will like the same thing. That's why I was also thinking about combining themes. After 3 weeks of intensive work I made Portfolio4me.com. It's a combination of all my thoughts that came to mind and a solution to the above problems! For speed I used NextJS, SupaBase.I hope this platform of mine will help more people! I will be glad for any feedback.Vladimir

One user compared it to using a public Notion website and another reported a minor URL issue. Many users expressed enthusiasm to try the product, highlighting its potential to help developers focus on their projects rather than website building.
