Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

You're entering the freemium weight tracking app market, which has a good number of competitors (n_matches=17), so differentiation will be key. This is an area where people are interested in tracking their progress, estimating calorie deficits, and visualizing their body changes. The core challenge in the "Freemium" category is that while people love using these tools, they often resist paying for them. Engagement is medium with similar products getting an average of 4 comments. Since you're in a freemium space, consider that you'll need to either find a niche of users willing to pay for premium features or create additional value that justifies a subscription. Given the existing competition, your 3D model rendering feature needs to be exceptionally accurate and visually appealing to stand out.

Recommendations

  1. Focus on identifying the user segments that derive the most value from the free version of your app. Understand their pain points and usage patterns to tailor premium features that directly address their needs. For example, users who meticulously track measurements and appreciate the visual feedback from the 3D model might be more inclined to pay for advanced analytics or personalized workout plans.
  2. Develop premium features that significantly enhance the user experience and offer tangible benefits beyond basic tracking. Consider features like AI-powered personalized meal plans based on dietary restrictions and preferences, advanced body composition analysis, or integration with wearable devices for real-time data tracking. Address concerns raised by users of similar products by ensuring high accuracy of body fat measurements and offering clear explanations of the underlying calculations.
  3. Explore the possibility of offering team-based subscriptions, particularly if your app can be used in gyms, fitness studios, or corporate wellness programs. These entities might be willing to pay for features like group progress tracking, personalized challenges, and aggregated data analysis. Selling to teams will reduce your marketing overhead, and increase retention rate.
  4. Consider offering personalized help or consulting services as a premium add-on. This could include one-on-one coaching sessions with certified nutritionists or fitness trainers, personalized workout plans, or detailed analysis of user data to identify areas for improvement. This approach will not only generate revenue but also foster a stronger connection with your users.
  5. Implement A/B testing with different pricing models and feature sets to determine the optimal combination for maximizing revenue and user satisfaction. Start with small groups of users and gradually roll out the most successful models to the broader user base. Make sure you factor in your costs when coming up with a pricing and margins strategy.
  6. Address accuracy concerns head-on. Since accuracy of body fat measurement is a key point of criticism in similar products (like FITYCAL), invest heavily in ensuring your 3D model rendering is as precise as possible. Be transparent about the technology you're using and its limitations, and provide users with options to validate their measurements using traditional methods.
  7. Based on user feedback from similar products, prioritize a clean and intuitive UI/UX design. NextLevel Fit's users have clearly expressed that better UI is desired. Make the app easy to navigate, visually appealing, and ensure that all features are easily accessible. Conduct user testing throughout the development process to identify and address any usability issues.
  8. Capitalize on the trend of AI-powered nutrition tracking, as seen in products like track-calories.com and CalorieAI. Integrate AI to simplify calorie tracking from photos of food or provide personalized meal suggestions based on user preferences and dietary restrictions. Ensure accuracy and provide transparent explanations of how the AI works to build trust with your users.

Questions

  1. Given the concerns about misleading nutritional information in similar apps like 'Intuitive nutrition information', how will you ensure the accuracy and transparency of the calorie and macronutrient data in your app, and how will you address potential misinformation about food processing or ingredients?
  2. Considering the mixed reactions to the accuracy of AI-based body assessments, how will you validate the accuracy of your 3D model renderings and body fat estimations, and what alternative methods will you offer users to verify their measurements?
  3. Many users are requesting additional platforms or features. How will you prioritize which features to build and which platform to port to first based on user demand, technical feasibility, and alignment with your overall business goals?

I made a weight-loss app using OpenAI APIs

11 May 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN, wanted to show you my weekend project (several weekends actually).A few months back I started experimenting with LLMs as a way to estimate calories/macros and give useful feedback. The results were good enough that I felt like something was there. I wanted to shed a few pounds so I built out a web app for myself. A few friends tried it and everyone said "this needs to be a native app".So I converted the Rails app to just be an API backend and built an iOS app in SwiftUI. It just got approved in the (US) app store last week.https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fatgpt-ai-weight-loss-coach/id...Feature-wise it's pretty simple compared to MFP or Noom. But I've been logging my food every day for a while now and am down 12 pounds. It's been really fun to build and I'm trying to release a new version every week.Happy to hear any feedback or answer questions.

I Built a Lightweight Nutrition Tracker for the iPhone

25 Nov 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN,I was overweight in college and started my weight loss journey using an app called MyFitnessPal. Tracking calories not only helped me lose weight but also taught me a lot about nutrition and helped establish healthy eating habits that continue to benefit me. However, I’ve always been frustrated by the existing nutrition tracking apps. Many are slow and bloated, lack accurate nutrition data, or don’t respect user privacy. I wanted to build something that I’d love using myself.A few things that make FitBee stand out:* Fast, lightweight and to the point - The app is just about tracking your nutrition and makes that front and center. I've tried to make things that you do often as simple as possible (e.g., log yesterday's breakfast).* Robust Apple Health support - You can read/write data to Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises.* Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.* Photo Logging - You can take a photo of a food and get an estimate of the calories and macros. It's not 100% accurate but it's been super helpful for me when eating at a restaurant that doesn't have published nutrition info.* Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.* No Ads - The app is monetized via a subscription.* Subscription - Most of the features are free, but there are a few which require a monthly or annual subscription ($4.99/month or $39.99/year).You can try FitBee here: https://apple.co/4aGUw5X. I'd love your feedback!

Psychology and overeating impact weight loss more than calorie counting.

Calorie counting less effective for weight loss.

Meal planning app I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022

27 Dec 2023 Health & Fitness

1500cals is a calorie and excercise tracking tool that I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022 through simply watching what I ate and starting to exercise. The main "trick" I uncovered is simply to plan meals ahead. It sounds boring, it sounds annoying, but really its such a tiny effort for such outsized and life changing rewards that it should be a no-brainer.The existing tools I found were more focused on tracking after eating which is great in terms of capturing data and measuring over time, but I found really didn’t help me with locking in a routine. I wanted to fix this and bring some of this planning side along with tracking into an easy to use app. This is 1500cals!

Users praised the achievement and liked the idea. They suggested making it easier to find ingredients and requested an Android app.

Users find it difficult to locate specific ingredients and are disappointed by the lack of an Android app.

Intuitive nutrition information

29 Dec 2023 Health & Fitness

Hey everyone, I've been building this nutrition tracker and calorie counter recently, after being frustrated by existing products for ages. I built a similar app 8 years ago [1], but came back to this problem again since there are still no good solutions here. Lmk your thoughts and improvement ideas :)[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10077618

Users highlighted concerns about misleading nutritional information, particularly regarding sugars and food processing. They suggested improvements like adding fiber and net carb data, detailed food processing information, and consistent calorie counts. Some users questioned the need for the app to determine food processing levels and sought a rule of thumb for healthy eating. There were mixed opinions on the user experience, with some praising the simplicity and others wanting more detailed integration. Comments also touched on the credibility of organic certifications, the processing of oat milk, and the effectiveness of existing nutrition trackers like MacroFactor and Cronometer.

Users criticized the product for misleading nutritional information, particularly regarding sugars and carbohydrates, and the lack of fiber content. There were concerns about the oversimplification of data, the need for better quantification, and transparency in labeling. The honor system for nutrition labels and the effects of processed sugars were also questioned. Criticisms extended to the user experience, such as the need for clarity in meal splitting and food weight, and the product's limited focus on macros. Additionally, there were mentions of GMOs, the high cost of tracking farm chemicals, and comparisons to similar services like Cronometer.

An intuitive, no subscription, privacy-first calorie tracker for iPhone

29 Mar 2023 Health & Fitness

Hi all, over the last 2 years I've been on and off building my app for iPhone.Caloree is basically a freemium calorie tracker/food diary with the ability to only track calories. This sets it apart from the competition which usually allows logging a gazillion macros. This (hopefully) makes it easier for users to log their food. Feedback so far has been great. The app launched today, which I am quite proud of. It's been 2 years next to raising 2 small kids which meant to often sacrifice the project when it was moving along nicely and spending way less time on it than I would have wanted to. It was a real test on my patience which is usually not that great :)Let me know if you have any questions or feedback is also greatly appreciated!- Rudy

Users praised the launch and appreciated the offline feature. There were requests for additional features and questions about calorie calculation, specifically BMR vs TDEE for weight loss. Discussions also focused on the use of BMR in weight loss and calorie tracking apps.

Users criticized the product for having a low calorie limit and calculation. They also mentioned that using BMR is less appropriate than TDEE for accurate measurements. Additionally, there were concerns about the source of the food database.
