Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market with your weight loss tracking app. Our analysis, based on 20 similar products, suggests this space falls into what we call the 'Swamp' category. This means there are already many solutions available, but none have truly captured the market's heart. The average engagement (n_comments = 1) on these similar products is low, suggesting users aren't particularly excited about the existing options. While there are successful apps, standing out requires a unique angle. The additional features you're considering, like hairstyle and clothing recommendations, might help you differentiate, but it's crucial to execute them well. The lack of positive signals (net use/buy) suggests that people don't really miss yet another one of these apps. Before you dedicate too much time and money into this idea, make sure you can create something DIFFERENT and compelling.

Recommendations

  1. Given the crowded market, your first step should be in-depth competitor analysis. Don't just look at features; understand why existing apps haven't become indispensable for users. Read through user reviews of apps like MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, and others to identify pain points and unmet needs.
  2. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, focus on a specific niche within the weight loss space. For example, you could target new mothers, people with specific dietary restrictions (like gluten-free or vegan), or individuals who prefer visual tracking methods. Specializing will help you tailor your app to a defined user group and reduce direct competition.
  3. Explore potential integrations with existing health and fitness platforms (like Apple Health, Google Fit, or Fitbit). This could provide you with a user base from day one and save you the hassle of building an ecosystem from scratch. Ensure you provide added value beyond what these platforms already offer.
  4. Instead of building a standalone app, consider creating tools or plugins for existing weight loss platforms. This would allow you to leverage their established user base and revenue streams without the risk of building your own competing platform.
  5. Based on user feedback from similar products (e.g., requests for Apple Watch support, Android app), ensure your app is cross-platform compatible and supports popular wearable devices. Addressing these known pain points early will give you a competitive edge.
  6. Prioritize user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design. Several similar products received criticism for poor UI, so invest in creating an intuitive and visually appealing app. Conduct user testing early and often to gather feedback and iterate on your design.
  7. Given that many users find calorie tracking challenging and express concerns about accuracy (as seen in the comments for similar products), focus on providing accurate and reliable nutritional information. Consider incorporating a verified food database or allowing users to submit corrections.
  8. Since meal tracking based on camera input raised accuracy concerns, think about giving the user multiple ways to input meals (text input, voice input, photos). Consider integrating with restaurant menus and grocery store databases to make finding and logging food easier.

Questions

  1. What unique value proposition does your app offer that isn't already available in the crowded weight loss market? How will you stand out and attract users?
  2. How will you ensure the accuracy of your meal recommendations and calorie tracking, and what measures will you take to address user concerns about privacy and data security?
  3. Given the low engagement observed in similar products, how will you create a compelling and habit-forming user experience that keeps users motivated and coming back for more?

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

FitBee – A Better Alternative to MyFitnessPal

04 Dec 2024 Health & Fitness

I was overweight in college and started my weight loss journey using an app called MyFitnessPal. Tracking calories not only helped me lose weight but also taught me a lot about nutrition and helped establish healthy eating habits that continue to benefit me. However, I’ve always been frustrated by the existing nutrition tracking apps. They are slow and bloated, lack accurate nutrition data, or don’t respect user privacy. I wanted to build something that I’d love using myself.A few things that make FitBee stand out:* Fast, lightweight and to the point - The app is just about tracking your nutrition and makes that front and center. I've tried to make things that you do often as simple as possible (e.g., log yesterday's breakfast).* Robust Apple Health support - You can read/write data to Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises.* Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.* Photo Logging - You can take a photo of a food and get an estimate of the calories and macros. It's not 100% accurate but it's been super helpful for me when eating at a restaurant that doesn't have published nutrition info.* Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.* No Ads - The app is monetized via a subscription.* Monetization - Most of the features are free, but there are a few which require a monthly or annual subscription ($4.99/month or $39.99/year). I also recently added a one time purchase option since a few folks had asked about it.You can try FitBee here: https://apple.co/4aGUw5X. I'd love your feedback!

I Built a Lightweight Nutrition Tracker for the iPhone

Psychology and overeating impact weight loss more than calorie counting.

Calorie counting less effective for weight loss.

I made a weight-loss app using OpenAI APIs

11 May 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN, wanted to show you my weekend project (several weekends actually).A few months back I started experimenting with LLMs as a way to estimate calories/macros and give useful feedback. The results were good enough that I felt like something was there. I wanted to shed a few pounds so I built out a web app for myself. A few friends tried it and everyone said "this needs to be a native app".So I converted the Rails app to just be an API backend and built an iOS app in SwiftUI. It just got approved in the (US) app store last week.https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fatgpt-ai-weight-loss-coach/id...Feature-wise it's pretty simple compared to MFP or Noom. But I've been logging my food every day for a while now and am down 12 pounds. It's been really fun to build and I'm trying to release a new version every week.Happy to hear any feedback or answer questions.

A Simple Nutrition Tracker for iOS

I've tracked my calories and macros off and on for years, and always felt that the existing apps were somewhat bloated and clunky to use.To scratch my own itch, I built FitBee to make tracking a bit less of a pain in the butt.A few things that make FitBee stand out:* Fast and lightweight - It's completely native, (mostly built using SwiftUI) and I've tried to make it as fast to launch/use as possible.* Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.* Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.* Robust Apple Health support - You can sync data with Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises. You can try FitBee here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fitbee-calorie-macro-counter/i...If you end up trying it, I'd love any feedback!

I built an AI-powered app that helped me lose 30 lbs and gain muscle

Hey everyone, Like many of you, I've been amazed by the latest AI advancements and have integrated AI into my daily life. As a fitness enthusiast, I was searching for an all-in-one tool that could track my nutrition, workouts, and sleep in one place, while providing insights into how these factors correlate with each other. This need led me to create HealthMaxAI. Using the app, I've personally lost over 30 pounds of fat, which has been incredibly motivating. HealthMaxAI has truly transformed my approach to health and fitness, and I believe it can do the same for others. I'm excited to share this tool with you and would love any feedback you might have. Your insights will be invaluable in making HealthMaxAI even better. Thank you in advance for your time and for checking out the app!

Users expressed doubts about the authenticity of the service, requested screenshots and a better explanation on the landing page, and reported an issue with Google Sign-in. One user is excited to try the service but seeks more information on how it works.

Users criticized the product for not being a real place, the landing page lacking screenshots and app usage explanation, and issues with Google Sign-in on the Android app.

12 May 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey everyone!I've been diving into a project that stemmed from a familiar frustration. I found myself hitting a wall with exercise routines and healthy meals—keeping things fresh and staying on top of progress felt like a challenge. None of the existing solutions quite clicked for me.So, I decided to channel my tech skills into something snappy and efficient to tackle this dilemma head-on. The result? I've crafted an initial version of a web app that packs a punch:Snap a pic to track your meals effortlessly. Instantly get meal suggestions tailored to your dietary preferences (think vegan, Mediterranean, paleo, keto...) with a simple tap, thanks to some nifty machine learning.website: eliteolympus.comI'm already gearing up for future features like exercise tracking and suggestions, lifestyle analytics, progress charts, wearables integration, daily goals, a calendar view—you name it!I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas on where to take this next!

Camera-based meal tracking app could be helpful.

Difficult to achieve accuracy in meal tracking.

Speech to Calories (just speak to log your calories automatically)

26 Aug 2024 Health & Fitness

I started this as a fasting tracker app, but then I realized I was using ChatGPT a lot for tracking my meals. It was a bit inconvenient as I couldn't make edits easily, no dedicated UI etc. There were a lot of apps that have photo to calories functionality (this app has it too) but I find it much less useful than speaking, as I already weigh my stuff and actually read the nutritional info. So I've made this app, and I'd appreciate any sort of feedback.

Track your calories easily by saying what you ate

Hi guys,I created this app to solve one of my own problems: I found calorie tracking to be a real pain. Now, instead of scanning barcodes, scrolling through lists, or taking photos of food, I just speak into my phone (or computer), tell Calorio what I’ve eaten, and it handles the rest. It uses OpenAI’s APIs to process audio and map foods to calories. It’s free to use without an account, but if you want it to tally daily calories and remember everything you’ve eaten, you’ll need to sign up with your Google account and subscribe (you get 7 days for free).I would really appreciate any feedback; please let me know if you have any questions, issues or suggestions.Thank you! Paul.

Users find calorie tracking challenging and express a preference for text input due to privacy and accuracy concerns. There's specific feedback on inaccurate calorie estimations, notably with chicken breast counts being off. While some users commend the app and appreciate the macros feature, there's a suggestion to look at MacroFactor for voice to text and AI enhancements.

Users criticized the product for privacy issues related to voice input, lack of text input options, unreliable nutritional labels, and inaccurate calorie estimations. The calorie estimation issue was highlighted multiple times, with suggestions for improvement through learning from previous logs. Additionally, users noted the absence of a macros tracking feature, pointing out that a similar feature is available in MacroFactor.

ChatGPT for calorie tracking. Frictionless diet and exercise tracking

07 Nov 2024 Health & Fitness

Hi, I'm Steve and I've built this mobile app to solve my very long-standing problem of not consistently using any calorie tracking apps due to the poor UX (many clicks, too much friction). So, although I am not the best UI/UX designer, I have tried to remove friction at every corner with Journable. This applies to the1. Tracking experience: Chat-based interface (think ChatGPT) to log food/exercise 2. Onboarding experience: No login screen, no measurements or goals, straight to the main chat window 3. Photo entries: Just take a picture of your plate and doneThat said, I'm not the best UI/UX designer so I would really appreciate any feedback on the app, and I welcome any and all comments & suggestions. Should I make it easier? Faster? Simpler? Does it need more color? Keen to hear it all!

Good app, no login needed, needs meal editing and saving.

Feedback per meal is repetitive, prefer daily feedback.

Meal planning app I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022

27 Dec 2023 Health & Fitness

1500cals is a calorie and excercise tracking tool that I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022 through simply watching what I ate and starting to exercise. The main "trick" I uncovered is simply to plan meals ahead. It sounds boring, it sounds annoying, but really its such a tiny effort for such outsized and life changing rewards that it should be a no-brainer.The existing tools I found were more focused on tracking after eating which is great in terms of capturing data and measuring over time, but I found really didn’t help me with locking in a routine. I wanted to fix this and bring some of this planning side along with tracking into an easy to use app. This is 1500cals!

Users praised the achievement and liked the idea. They suggested making it easier to find ingredients and requested an Android app.

Users find it difficult to locate specific ingredients and are disappointed by the lack of an Android app.

track-calories.com - AI-powered calorie tracking from photos of your food.

📷 Track your calories ✅ Focus on simplicity: Upload photos of your meals and receive detailed calorie and nutrient information. ✅ Personalized tracking: Adjust your nutritional goals based on your individual profile.

Users praise the simplicity and ease of use of the Track-Calories.com tool, highlighting its accuracy. A suggestion was made to convert pricing to the user's location.

The primary criticism from the Product Hunt launch feedback is the need for improvement in pricing, specifically the conversion of prices to the user's location for better clarity and user experience.
