Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea for a scores-prediction website where groups compete is entering a crowded space, categorized as a "Swamp." This means there are already several similar solutions available, and it might be difficult to stand out. We found 13 similar products (high confidence in this assessment!), which confirms the competitive nature of this market. Engagement appears to be low, with an average of just 1 comment per product among the matches we found. The lack of positive 'use' or 'buy' signals suggests people aren't actively seeking new solutions in this area. To be brutally honest, you'll face an uphill battle if you proceed without a significant differentiator.

Recommendations

  1. Before investing further, conduct thorough research to understand why existing score prediction platforms haven't achieved widespread success. Analyze their user feedback, identify pain points, and determine if there are unmet needs or desires. This will help you identify potential gaps in the market you could fill.
  2. If you're determined to proceed, focus on a specific niche or group of users who are currently underserved by existing platforms. For instance, you could target fans of a particular sport, region, or competition level. Tailoring your platform to a specific audience will make it easier to attract and retain users.
  3. Consider offering tools or services that complement existing prediction platforms instead of directly competing with them. For example, you could develop an API that integrates with popular score providers or create a suite of analytical tools that help users make more informed predictions.
  4. Explore adjacent problems or opportunities in the sports prediction space that might be more promising. For example, you could focus on developing a platform for tracking and analyzing betting odds or creating a fantasy sports game with a unique twist. Think about the broader ecosystem and identify areas where you can add value without directly competing with established players.
  5. Given the competitive landscape, it might be wise to save your energy and resources for a more promising opportunity. Carefully evaluate the potential risks and rewards of pursuing this idea before committing significant time or money. Perhaps there's a different startup idea that aligns better with your skills and interests, and the current market conditions.
  6. Given Penal and EURO 2024 Predictor's positive feedback around user interface and team morale, consider putting extra thought into the UX, and the social aspects of your product. Make it frictionless to set up groups, invite friends, and customize the experience for them.

Questions

  1. What unique features or functionalities will your platform offer that differentiate it from existing score prediction websites and address the unmet needs of users?
  2. How will you acquire users and build a community around your platform in a crowded market with low engagement, especially without a significant marketing budget?
  3. What is your plan to monetize the platform, and how will you ensure that your revenue model is sustainable in the long term, considering the absence of strong "buy" signals?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Use predictive modeling to win your bracket competition

14 Jan 2023 Tech

Hi! I made this as a side project this week to submit a bracket for our friends' NFL playoff bracket competition. It is all html and vanilla JS, runs directly in the browser, and is pretty fun to take for a spin.Obviously it is far from polished - that might have to wait for next year!
