Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space for recipe apps, where many have tried and few have truly broken through. Our data shows high confidence due to 8 similar products already existing. This indicates significant competition. Engagement with these apps, as measured by the average number of comments, is low. This suggests that existing solutions haven't fully captured user attention or solved their problems effectively. The recipe app landscape is littered with mediocre solutions. To succeed, you'll need a radically different approach or a laser focus on an underserved niche. Otherwise, your free, offline recipe app risks being just another face in the crowd.

Recommendations

  1. Given the crowded market, start by thoroughly researching why existing recipe apps haven't achieved widespread success. Analyze user reviews, identify pain points, and understand what's missing from current solutions. This will help you identify potential gaps and avoid replicating past mistakes. For example, one similar app was criticized for lacking onboarding and a consolidated shopping cart.
  2. If you still want to move forward, pinpoint a specific niche or user group that's underserved by current recipe apps. Consider dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free), cooking skill levels (beginner, advanced), or cultural cuisines (Indian, Thai). Tailoring your app to a specific audience will increase its relevance and appeal. One app targeted non-food items for recipes, which was viewed negatively.
  3. Instead of building a standalone app, consider creating tools or plugins that integrate with existing recipe platforms or websites. This could involve developing a recipe importer, a meal planning tool, or a shopping list generator. By adding value to existing ecosystems, you can reach a wider audience and establish yourself as a trusted resource.
  4. Explore adjacent problems that might be more promising and less competitive. For example, you could focus on meal planning, grocery shopping, or food waste reduction. By shifting your focus to a related area, you can leverage your knowledge and skills while avoiding direct competition. Another idea is to look at recipe export functionality, as it was highly requested.
  5. Consider focusing on the offline aspect of your app. Many users struggle with connectivity in the kitchen. Make offline access a core differentiator. Ensure that the user experience doesn't suffer offline. Optimize for speed and reliability. Make offline your unique selling proposition.
  6. Before launching, conduct extensive user testing with your target audience. Gather feedback on the app's features, usability, and overall value. Use this feedback to iterate and improve your app before its official release. Pay special attention to onboarding, as some competitors were critiqued for this.
  7. Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that highlights your app's unique features and benefits. Use social media, content marketing, and app store optimization to reach your target audience. Consider collaborating with food bloggers or influencers to promote your app.

Questions

  1. Given the low engagement with similar apps, what specific features or functionalities will your app offer to truly captivate users and keep them coming back for more?
  2. How will you ensure that your app's recipe import function is accurate and reliable, especially when dealing with varying website formats and data structures?
  3. What is your plan for maintaining and updating the app over the long term, considering the ever-changing landscape of mobile technology and user expectations?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

The Product Hunt launch received congratulations and feedback on customisation and a good interface. Suggestions included the need for onboarding, macro targeting, and a consolidated shopping cart. These points highlight areas for improvement and potential features to enhance user experience and functionality.

Users criticize the Product Hunt launch for lacking essential features. Specifically, there's a need for better onboarding, macro targeting capabilities, a consolidated shopping cart, and a clearer definition of its AI purpose. These omissions detract from the user experience and limit the product's overall utility.

I made recipes app, so you don't waste your food ingredients

22 Aug 2024 Cooking

Hello everyone,I created a EasyCook app, this app will generate food recipes based on your ingredients. The idea is not to waste food, and if you have left some ingredients in the Kitchen, you can write it down in app and get a recipe based on these ingredients. The app is free to use, however have more features available for paid users. Would be thankful for feedback, so I can improve the app more!

Recipe accepts non-food, harmful items as ingredients.

Accepts non-food, harmful items.

I made a recipe manager, import recipes by URL and get rid of the ads

01 May 2024 Productivity

Dealing with hundreds of recipe bookmarks was becoming impossible, needed a way to save them and organize them.So I made a recipe manager, with the main goal of being simple to use and navigate. And it should look good on any device I happen to be using in the kitchen: phone, tablet.Regarding pricing, I see it being free for most basic features, and having a Premium plan for more advanced features (like importing recipes from pictures or videos). Which means Premium would always be completely optional, not forced. Hopefully just £2.90 per month. But until there are more features, it's totally free.

PurePlates – A Recipe Scraping iOS App

30 Sep 2024 Cooking

Hey Everyone! This is my first post on Hacker News, and I wanted to share my project with you! From a young age, I dreamed of becoming a chef, but life took me down the path of software engineering instead. Nevertheless, my passion for creating delicious meals has always remained close to my heart. This journey led me to seek out recipes to enhance my cooking skills, but I often found myself frustrated by the websites I encountered—ads everywhere, walls of text, and recipes that were difficult to follow. That’s where PurePlates comes in. PurePlates allows users to share a recipe through their mobile browser or simply copy and paste the URL directly into the app. In an instant, you receive a scraped recipe that includes instructions, ingredients, and any available nutrition information. You can easily start cooking and follow along step by step, making the process much more enjoyable. Plus, if you find a recipe you love, you can add it to your favorites for quick access later! As this is just an MVP, there’s still plenty of room for improvement, and I’m actively working on enhancing the extraction rate for recipes. Thanks for reading, and keep hacking! Connor

Users appreciate the self-hosted, web-based recipe manager Mealie, with some recommending the Tandoor Recipes app. A veteran cook emphasizes the importance of recipe export over import in such apps. There are questions about account signup, with comparisons to the Paprika app. One user loves the app and suggests adding an auto-tagging feature for cuisine types.

Users criticized the recipe app for having a limited lifespan and difficulty in exporting recipes. Additionally, they found Paprika to be old and clunky. Another common complaint was the lack of auto-tagging for cuisine types.

A recipe manager for saving recipes from social media URLs or any text

15 Feb 2024 Cooking Food & Drink

If you like to save recipes you might have had issues with managing recipes from several sources: not being able to search through them, missing features in some of them like ingredient scaling, or just a bad interface. This is especially the case for recipes from Instagram, which can be a great place to discover them but is not “cooking-friendly”.With our web app you can create a recipe from an instagram post and save it in a format that can be searched by recipe title or ingredients. We launched it barely over a month ago to a small group and have since also added an explore feature to make adding your first recipes even easier and an AI assistant that generates recipes based on your prompt. Recipes you create can be public or private. You can check out already published recipes and save them without making an account, but to create new ones you’ll need to log in. If you don’t want to make an account one you can use this log in to try it out:showhn@pomeloapp.ioshowhnLet me know what you think?

I built a tool that extracts and formats any recipe using it's url

24 Sep 2024 Productivity

I cook a lot and most recipe sites are full of fluff and ads. I wanted a place where I can store all my favourite recipes, formatted beautifully with no ads. Version 1 required the user to copy and paste the entire recipe, but version 2 you only need the url of the recipe! Would love to know what y'all thing
