Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

Creating an AI-powered app for generating bedtime stories for kids puts you in a competitive but potentially rewarding space. There are at least 30 similar products on the market, which validates the interest in this area. The engagement around these products is medium, indicating people are curious and actively exploring these solutions. However, because the market is crowded, differentiation is key. As a freemium product, the challenge will be convincing users to pay for premium features in a space where several free options already exist. You'll need to focus on what makes your app uniquely valuable and who exactly will be willing to pay for it. Building the app makes sense, but consider monetization strategies and how to stand out.

Recommendations

  1. Since you are in the Freemium category, focus on identifying which user segments get the most value from the free version of your AI bedtime story app. Are they parents who need a quick story, or educators looking for themed tales? Understanding this will help you tailor premium offerings.
  2. Develop premium features that cater specifically to these high-value users. Consider offering advanced customization options (e.g., specific moral lessons, personalized character appearances, or complex plot lines) as premium features. User feedback from similar products suggests that features like ASMR voice options, background music, and integration with devices like Yoto could be strong differentiators. Address the concerns about character consistency and advanced vocabulary that other similar apps have faced.
  3. Explore the possibility of charging teams, such as preschools or daycare centers, rather than individual users. These institutions could benefit from a library of AI-generated stories and be willing to pay for commercial use licenses and additional features like collaborative story creation.
  4. Offer personalized help or consulting services related to storytelling. This could include workshops for parents on creating engaging stories or custom story creation services for special occasions. This helps in increasing the perceived value of the premium version and drives conversions.
  5. Before a wide launch, test different pricing approaches and feature sets with small groups of users. This allows you to gather valuable feedback and refine your monetization strategy before committing to a particular model. For example, test a subscription versus a pay-per-story model to determine which resonates better with your audience.
  6. Based on criticisms of existing apps, prioritize a user-friendly design, especially for children. Address potential UI issues on mobile devices and ensure site accessibility. Pay attention to image consistency and avoid blurry or 'nightmarish' AI-generated illustrations.
  7. Given the potential privacy concerns around AI-generated content, be transparent about how user data is handled and ensure compliance with child privacy regulations. Address the API key exposure issue that some similar apps have faced to build trust with parents.
  8. Think about additional delivery formats beyond the app itself. Many users have requested book formats for the stories. Consider offering print-on-demand options or partnerships with children's book publishers.

Questions

  1. Given the criticisms of existing apps for using overly complex vocabulary, how will you ensure your app creates stories that are appropriately tailored to different age groups, and can the vocabulary be adjusted based on the target age range?
  2. How will you balance the desire for personalization (character creation, moral lessons) with the risk of generating generic or 'formulaic' stories, as seen in the criticisms of similar apps?
  3. With numerous competitors in the AI bedtime story space, what is your unique selling proposition beyond simply generating stories? How will you build a brand that resonates with parents and stands out from the crowd, especially given that positive buy signals for similar products are rare?

Choose-your-own-adventure bedtime stories by AI

27 Dec 2023 Kids

Hi! I have a 3-yo child that loves bedtime stories and I built an app for him that has evolved a lot during the last 5 months. The main features are: - Personalised stories with your own character names, topics (emojis) and moral - Interactive mode, which is like the "Choose your own adventure" books I used to read in the 80s - Image generation (DALL-e 3) - Text-to-speech (Google TTS) - Supports 5 languages: EN, ES, PT, FR, NOI'd love to see some feedback about the app functionality and how to find a suitable business model (that covers API expenses). Thanks in advance!

A user questions the necessity of GPT-4-turbo and expresses a preference for GPT-3.5-turbo-1106. Other comments are either dead or contain no content.

Users believe that GPT-4-turbo is unnecessary and that GPT-3.5-turbo-1106 is a better option.

Tonight's Bedtime Story – AI generated stories with images and audio

Hey HN - sharing out my holiday hacking project.Tonight's Bedtime Story uses the OpenAI API to generate a bedtime story based on a prompt (or you can just say "tell me a story"). It also generates an image prompt and uses that to create a cover image with dalle-3 then turns the text of the story into audio for easy playback. It's been interesting to see how well this does (as well as some of its limitations).Heres one of my favorite stories it has generated so far: <https://bedtime-ai.nokk.io/stories/2Zek3PtK4SoQaHO1edZDPuQnh...>The project is built on Nokkio[0], a full-stack React framework, and the code is available on GitHub[1].Hope you like it, suggestions welcome![0] https://www.nokk.io[1] https://github.com/bradleyboy/bedtime-ai

Users appreciate the open-source nature of the project and share similar project links. There is also curiosity about whether children enjoy the stories.

I outsourced my child's bedtime stories to AI (Don't Judge Me)

Hey folks,I made this app for my child and nephews, they really enjoy it and I thought some of you might find it useful. It started because I was struggling with bedtime stories for my kid. You know how it is, fried brain after 8 hours work, complete lack of imagination, and there I am repeating the same horrible story over and over again. In the app, you specify a few things like your kids age, a plot, characters and a place, if there's a message you would like to convey (sometimes i've no idea how to touch certain topics) and it will generate a story with images and optional narration based on those parameters.I've been dogfooding it for a couple months now, and it's been pretty helpful and engaging. Thought maybe other tired parents out there might want to give it a shot too. It's not perfect, and it's definitely not meant to replace actual parenting. Just a little assist when imagination runs out.If you're curious, feel free to check it out. I'd love your feedback and if you have any thoughts on how to make it better, let me know! Thanks for taking a look!

AI for Toddlers

I wanted to share a few AI related things I've made for my kids (ages 2 and 4). It's mind blowing that the tech didn't exist in a useful state a year ago and now I end up using it almost daily.1. Story creator app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/custom-ai-stories/id1669159225 - iphone app to create and read stories. This uses the openAI API and Amazon Polly (text to speech). Icon generated by Midjourney. Recently the stories have been taking a bit longer than the estimate to generate, I think due to increased openAI API usage2. Belle uses the potty book - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1PBVZeM3PdDYQDF0VJrU-sRn6v43AqSmaqm-w-08Tmyo/edit?usp=sharing - the images were created using Midjourney. Most of the children's books I've made for the kiddos are on random financial topics without a main character so it was fun to try Midjourney for this one.3. Children's book recommender - https://www.yes.ai/bookrec/?library=paloalto - GPT powered book recommendations with a link to get it from the local library.4. AI robot - https://photos.app.goo.gl/3RnYVF1qCsbq3PbR6 - A raspberry pi powered voice interface for chatGPT. You push the button to ask it a question, it sends to openAI and then reads outloud the response. Speech to text isn't great on toddler voices so this hasn't been used as much as I had hoped.5. textGPT - https://www.twilio.com/blog/text-ai-assistant-gpt-3-aws-lambda-twilio - I set up a phone number so I could text GPT as needed instead of using the web UI, I've used it for random things like suggesting nearby u-pick strawberry farms and answering questions about dinosaurs.I'd love to hear what AI related things you guys are building.

The app is praised for answering toddler's questions in a fun way. Users also appreciate the AI-illustrated Tarot book created using Midjourney, and the use of GIMP and Publisher for achieving perfect margins. The story and theme setting are considered brilliant, with users loving the icon and requesting prompts.

The Amazon Kindle creation tool received strong criticism for being the worst.

Kids audiobook spoken in their parent's voice using AI voice clones

Hey HN! I’ve built an app for parents to create kids audiobooks spoken in their voice. Parents record a story for 2.5 mins in the app to create their AI voice clone. They can then choose any book from our kids library to create their own personalised audiobook. We have no background in coding, so its been a labour of love using a no-code app builder. Would love to know what you think, and what could be improved!www.soundaisleep.com

The product encourages reading to children and includes a Jurassic World quote about animal social skills. It is currently available on the Apple App Store, with an Android launch planned for the end of the year. However, it is not available in the Philippines App Store.

The product or service is not available in the Philippines.
