Idea type: Run Away

Multiple attempts have failed with clear negative feedback. Continuing down this path would likely waste your time and resources when better opportunities exist elsewhere.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea of creating a Linktree for payments, where users can share all their payment options in one link, falls into a category where multiple attempts have yielded negative feedback. Our analysis shows that there are at least 7 similar products in this space, indicating considerable competition. User engagement, indicated by an average of 5 comments on similar products, is moderate. Unfortunately, we don't have enough information on the net use and buy signals from the comments, indicating that people rarely even talk about using or buying these similar products. Given the existing competition and the lack of strong positive signals from similar attempts, it's crucial to carefully consider whether to proceed with this idea, or whether you should abandon the path.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly analyze the criticism from similar product launches, especially regarding solutions looking for problems, censorship concerns, and repetitive discussions. Understanding these pain points is crucial before investing further resources. Pay close attention to the product 'Share all your payment methods in one link (linktree for payments)'.
  2. Assess if your skills and resources can pivot to solve a related but different problem. Could you focus on a specific niche, like crypto payments, or a specific user group, like freelancers, to differentiate your offering? Consider the product 'Cloakd.ai - Create Private Crypto Payment Links'.
  3. If you've already started building, evaluate whether the technology can be repurposed for a different application. Maybe the core linking functionality can be adapted to a different type of content or resource sharing.
  4. Conduct in-depth interviews with at least three users who have tried similar products. Focus on understanding their unmet needs, frustrations, and desired improvements. Don't just ask if they like the product, find out about the specific tasks they were trying to accomplish.
  5. Based on your research, brainstorm a new idea that addresses the identified needs and avoids the pitfalls of previous attempts. This might involve refining the core concept, targeting a different market segment, or offering a unique value proposition.
  6. Prioritize addressing censorship and surveillance concerns, if present, as these appear to be significant pain points for users. Ensure that your platform is transparent, secure, and respects user privacy. Consider implementing features that give users more control over their data and content.

Questions

  1. Given the mixed reactions to similar products, how can you clearly articulate the specific problem your payment link solution solves, and for whom?
  2. Considering the expressed concerns about censorship and surveillance, what specific measures will you implement to ensure user privacy and data security?
  3. How will you differentiate your platform from existing solutions to avoid the perception that it's just another 'solution looking for a problem'?

I gained 50k users for my app with NO marketing

10 Jan 2023 Marketing

Hi Hackernews,Last year around February, I found myself having to pay contractors for various services that they provided me as I completed my new home. An occurring question that kept coming up with each conversation was - how do you want me to pay you or do you have “X” payment app on your phone that I can send the cash to?I realized that some preferred Venmo, others preferred cash app - some had neither only relied on PayPal. Being the software engineer that I am, I figured why not build an app where a person can just list all their payment apps and then I can pick which ever worked for me. Similar to linktree but ONLY for payment appsSo I did just that, built the app - [https://paylinkz.app/](https://paylinkz.app/) and released it to the store without any fan fare - I didn’t even tell my close relatives because I could care less whether they used it or not. I also didn’t want any high expectations from anyone so did it in silence10 months later we have 50k users with $0 spent on ads. It is worth noting that the initial audience that I had in mind were not even the people who used it the most. Today some of the use cases I have seen on the app are people using it for fund raising, mariachi bands, barber shops, landlords and Uber drivers for collecting tips, fantasy leagues...FWIW - this is not my first rodeo at building an app and I think luck must have favored me this time around. It also helps that it is something that the market needed but never had. Although I was lucky in 2022, my goal is to put some effort into marketing to see where this goes.Would love some overall feedback!

The Show HN product received critical feedback, with multiple users labeling it as spam or marketing ploys, and expressing skepticism about the claimed user growth without marketing. There were requests for details on user acquisition and monetization plans, and suggestions for features like subscription for branding and referral payments. Technical issues were noted, such as a broken Play Store link and a non-functioning markdown hyperlink. Some users questioned the app's presence and reliability in app stores, and one mentioned unexpected positive feedback from a niche community.

Users criticized the Show HN submission for appearing as spam with no value, having a misleading title, and using clickbait tactics. The effectiveness of Show HN was questioned sarcastically. Technical issues included a broken Play Store link, a non-working markdown hyperlink, and a 404 error. The message and app availability were unclear, as was the monetization strategy. There were doubts about the authenticity of user feedback, suggesting bot activity, and concerns over the app's credibility due to its unrated status and txt speak name with few reviews.

Send and split money between various payment apps

26 Jun 2024 Payments

Hi HN! I am a 17-year old high school co-founder and I'm building an app that lets people effortlessly send and split payments between PayPal, Cash App, and Venmo (more platforms coming soon)! I initially came across this problem when I ran a Minecraft server with my friends in freshman year of high school. As our server size grew, we had to worry about how we were going to split the monthly bill. Some of my friends had PayPal, others only had Cash App, and ultimately, it was a hassle when collecting money from everyone. This led to me building PayBridge Technologies. With PayBridge you can seamlessly transfer money between various payment apps without the hassle of multiple logins or steps. We also provide a centralized location where you can easily visualize who has paid you and with what payment method.Right now transactions are slower (for verification purposes), but we are actively working on automating them to make them instant.Start bridging today!Quick demo of a transaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BRBuEt6wdA
