Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market for ChatGPT Chrome extensions, specifically those that understand the current browsing context. With 18 similar products already out there, the competition is stiff. While some extensions have garnered positive feedback for their simplicity and usefulness, others face criticism regarding privacy concerns, undesirable redirection, and lack of essential features. Engagement, measured by the average number of comments, is low across these similar products, suggesting that many don't generate significant buzz or sustained interest. The lack of positive use or buy signals further underscores the challenge of creating a compelling offering in this space. The prevailing sentiment is that the market has seen several mediocre solutions, making it difficult to stand out unless you offer something fundamentally different and address the shortcomings of existing solutions.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly research why existing ChatGPT Chrome extensions haven't achieved widespread adoption or sustained engagement. Identify the pain points and unmet needs that you can address with your extension. What are users really complaining about in the reviews? What are they praising?
  2. Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, focus on a specific niche or user group with unique needs. For instance, you could target researchers who need to quickly summarize and analyze academic papers, or content creators who need assistance with generating ideas and outlines based on website content.
  3. Consider offering tools or integrations for existing ChatGPT extension providers rather than directly competing with them. This could involve developing specialized features or integrations that enhance the functionality of established extensions.
  4. Based on criticisms from similar products, prioritize user privacy and data security. Clearly communicate your data handling policies and implement robust security measures to protect user information. Address any concerns regarding web history tracking and data retention.
  5. Instead of redirecting users to a new window, provide in-window answers and seamless integration with the current browsing context. Optimize the user experience to minimize disruptions and maximize convenience.
  6. Implement a freemium model to encourage trials and adoption of your extension. Offer a limited set of features for free, with the option to upgrade to a paid plan for access to advanced functionality and support.
  7. Solicit feedback from users early and often. Actively listen to their suggestions and criticisms, and use their input to iterate and improve your extension. Show that you value their opinions and are committed to addressing their needs.
  8. Given the crowded market and relatively low engagement, explore adjacent problems that might be more promising. Are there other AI-powered tools or browser extensions that you could develop to address different user needs or market segments?
  9. Before investing significant time and resources, validate your idea with potential users. Conduct user interviews, surveys, and beta tests to gauge their interest and gather feedback. Be prepared to pivot or abandon your idea if it doesn't resonate with your target audience.

Questions

  1. What specific problem does your ChatGPT Chrome extension solve that existing solutions don't, and how can you demonstrate its unique value proposition to potential users?
  2. How will you differentiate your extension from the competition in terms of features, user experience, and privacy considerations, and what steps will you take to build trust with your users?
  3. What is your long-term vision for your extension, and how will you adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI and browser technology to stay ahead of the curve?

A Chrome extension to quickly ask ChatGPT about the page you're on

I made this tool for myself back in October after GPT-4 Vision came out. Being able to press Option+C, write a quick question, and hit Enter, with only the screenshot of the current tab as the context was a quick flow that I found very useful.I know there are most certainly more polished solutions out there now, but as we wait for the ChatGPT desktop app with builtin vision support I figured I'd release this now under an MIT license for whoever might find it useful. Plus this just automates your browser, meaning there's no need to put in API tokens or the like (you do have to be logged into ChatGPT, however).I don't think I'll put it on the Chrome Web Store, so the installation steps are a bit annoying, but if even one person finds use in this, I'll be happy!

Users suggest providing in-window answers instead of redirection. They find the idea fun and are asking for specific use cases and availability on the Chrome Web Store. Some comments are either unavailable or have been removed.

Users criticized the product for redirecting to a new window, which they found undesirable. Additionally, they noted that the product is not available on the Chrome Web Store.

Making a ChatGPT Chrome extension after a year of coding break

I guess this isn't very novel idea but I made a chrome extension that puts chatgpt inside any textbox on any website.I was on coding break due to Tech PM job, while making this I must have used chatgpt 100 times to ask for code help & reviews. It helped me make this in 4 days. Also used sveltekit for trying a new framework. Not sure with such crowded space if anyone would buy but my friend is pushing me to publish nevertheless. So here it is. Please check.

Made Chrome extension for ChatGPT in any textbox.

Not a novel idea, crowded space.
