Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea for a music application synced with psychological treatments, driven by real-world evidence, enters a market where numerous solutions have already emerged but haven't quite hit the mark. This puts you squarely in what we call a 'Swamp' category. While there are a few similar products (n_matches=3), indicating some market validation, the relatively low engagement (avg n_comments=2) suggests that existing solutions aren't deeply resonating with users. Because of this the overall engagement has been labeled as LOW. This is something you'll have to change. Given this landscape, it's crucial to understand why previous attempts have fallen short and to identify a unique angle or underserved niche to avoid getting lost in the crowd. Proceed with caution!

Recommendations

  1. Start by deeply researching existing music and therapy applications. Focus on identifying their shortcomings. What are users complaining about? Where are the gaps in functionality or approach? This understanding will be crucial in differentiating your product.
  2. Given the 'Swamp' category, finding a specific, underserved group is essential. Instead of targeting a broad audience, focus on a niche segment, such as individuals with specific anxiety disorders, PTSD, or those undergoing particular types of therapy. Tailoring the music and treatment sync to their unique needs will significantly increase your chances of success.
  3. Consider focusing on the 'evidence and data-driven' aspect of your idea. Partner with therapists or researchers to conduct pilot studies and gather real-world data on the efficacy of your application. Publishing these findings can establish credibility and attract users seeking science-backed solutions.
  4. Explore integrations with existing therapy platforms or tools. Instead of building a standalone application, consider creating a plugin or add-on that enhances the functionality of established platforms. This can provide a faster route to market and access to a ready-made user base.
  5. From the similar product analysis: 'Shimmr' received both positive reviews and requests for an Android version. This highlights the importance of platform accessibility. If you proceed, ensure your application is available on both iOS and Android to maximize your reach.
  6. The 'Shimmr' analysis also pointed to 'concerns about the lack of content'. Make sure you prioritize not just the platform itself but also the richness of its content, and ensure that there is a steady stream of updates. Content is king!

Questions

  1. What specific psychological treatments will your application integrate with, and how will the music dynamically adapt to the user's progress and emotional state during those treatments?
  2. What specific real-world evidence and data will you collect to demonstrate the effectiveness of your application, and how will you ensure the privacy and security of user data?
  3. Considering the potential for direct competition and established alternatives, what is your long-term monetization strategy, and how will you ensure the application remains accessible to users who may not be able to afford premium subscriptions?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Shimmr: Free iOS App Uses CIA Findings to Enhance Meditation and Focus

31 Jul 2024 Productivity

I built this free app to learn about creating Swift apps. As a software engineer, I wanted to deepen my knowledge in iOS development. Initially, I tried to build this app in React Native but couldn’t achieve the desired sound quality.I have been meditating for 16 years and have utilized many different sounds. Some years ago, I came across Bob Monroe and the Hemi-sync tapes, which is ultimately the original inspiration to create this app. You can search the CIA archives and find some interesting investigations on Bob Monroe’s works and frequencies in general. I also used some Google patent research for inspiration.Shimmr uses AudioKit to create sounds in real-time. This approach supports my long-term goal of adding more custom functionality for users. I have some ideas on creating dynamic tones that will in some way be more custom for each user. Using just MP3s or WAVs was never going to work. This is the MVP I released recently. Please give it a try—it’s free! :) Lots of new sounds and additions are already in the works.I’d love to hear your feedback and thoughts!Cheers!

Users are generally positive about the free app for learning Swift, with some drawing inspiration from Hemi-sync. There are requests for an Android version or an alternative mediation app. Some users are excited to try the product at work, and it is seen as an affordable alternative to Headspace or Calm. However, there is a concern about the lack of content.

The main criticisms are that React Native didn't achieve the desired sound quality and there is no Android version available.
