Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space with your recipe directory mobile app. Our analysis identifies this as a 'Swamp' category, meaning many similar solutions exist, but few have truly resonated with users. We found 21 similar products, indicating high competition. Engagement is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. Critically, we don't have sufficient positive user signals (use or buy) to indicate a strong market pull for another recipe app. This doesn't mean your idea is inherently bad, but it needs a significant differentiator to avoid being lost in the noise and if it doesn't have this differentiator, then you should seriously consider a pivot.

Recommendations

  1. Before investing further, deeply research why existing recipe apps haven't achieved widespread success. Don't just focus on features; investigate user experience, marketing, and monetization strategies. Read reviews, analyze competitor failures (as highlighted in the similar products criticism summaries), and identify unmet needs that your app can uniquely address.
  2. If you proceed, identify a specific niche or underserved group within the broader cooking community. Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, focus on a particular diet (e.g., specific allergies), cooking skill level (e.g., beginner sous vide), or cultural cuisine (e.g., authentic regional recipes). This will help you tailor your app and marketing efforts for a more receptive audience.
  3. Consider a B2B approach. Instead of directly competing with existing recipe apps, explore providing tools or services to them. This could involve recipe database management, AI-powered recipe suggestions, or user engagement features. Partnering with established players might be a faster and more sustainable path to market.
  4. Given the challenges in the recipe app market, explore adjacent problems that might be more promising. Could you focus on meal planning, grocery shopping, or reducing food waste? These related areas might offer a clearer path to success with less direct competition.
  5. Analyze the criticism summaries of similar products. For example, several users requested vegan recipes and the integration of AI. If you continue with the recipe app, implement these suggestions. Also, based on other criticisms, focus on recipe export functionality from day one.
  6. Consider how you can differentiate in terms of data quality. The "I made recipes app" was criticized for accepting harmful, non-food items as ingredients. Ensure you have robust data validation and curation processes in place to ensure accuracy and safety.
  7. Given that you are creating a mobile app, consider carefully if it must be a mobile app only. Consider if there's a web component you can add. If users can use it without downloading it that might add convenience.

Questions

  1. What is the core, unique value proposition of your app that existing solutions lack? How will you validate this proposition early on with real users?
  2. Given the low engagement observed in similar products, what specific strategies will you employ to drive user engagement and retention?
  3. How can you leverage AI to make your app stand out from the competition, and how will you ensure the AI is reliable and accurate? Could you implement AI recipe suggestion, recipe critique or even a chatbot?

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

The idea is not to waste food, and if you have left some ingredients in the Kitchen, you can write it down in app and get a recipe based on these ingredients. The app is free to use, however have more features available for paid users. Would be thankful for feedback, so I can improve the app more!

A recipe manager for saving recipes from social media URLs or any text

15 Feb 2024 Cooking Food & Drink

If you like to save recipes you might have had issues with managing recipes from several sources: not being able to search through them, missing features in some of them like ingredient scaling, or just a bad interface. This is especially the case for recipes from Instagram, which can be a great place to discover them but is not “cooking-friendly”.With our web app you can create a recipe from an instagram post and save it in a format that can be searched by recipe title or ingredients. We launched it barely over a month ago to a small group and have since also added an explore feature to make adding your first recipes even easier and an AI assistant that generates recipes based on your prompt. Recipes you create can be public or private. You can check out already published recipes and save them without making an account, but to create new ones you’ll need to log in. If you don’t want to make an account one you can use this log in to try it out:showhn@pomeloapp.ioshowhnLet me know what you think?

PurePlates – A Recipe Scraping iOS App

30 Sep 2024 Cooking

Hey Everyone! This is my first post on Hacker News, and I wanted to share my project with you! From a young age, I dreamed of becoming a chef, but life took me down the path of software engineering instead. Nevertheless, my passion for creating delicious meals has always remained close to my heart. This journey led me to seek out recipes to enhance my cooking skills, but I often found myself frustrated by the websites I encountered—ads everywhere, walls of text, and recipes that were difficult to follow. That’s where PurePlates comes in. PurePlates allows users to share a recipe through their mobile browser or simply copy and paste the URL directly into the app. In an instant, you receive a scraped recipe that includes instructions, ingredients, and any available nutrition information. You can easily start cooking and follow along step by step, making the process much more enjoyable. Plus, if you find a recipe you love, you can add it to your favorites for quick access later! As this is just an MVP, there’s still plenty of room for improvement, and I’m actively working on enhancing the extraction rate for recipes. Thanks for reading, and keep hacking! Connor

Users appreciate the self-hosted, web-based recipe manager Mealie, with some recommending the Tandoor Recipes app. A veteran cook emphasizes the importance of recipe export over import in such apps. There are questions about account signup, with comparisons to the Paprika app. One user loves the app and suggests adding an auto-tagging feature for cuisine types.

Users criticized the recipe app for having a limited lifespan and difficulty in exporting recipes. Additionally, they found Paprika to be old and clunky. Another common complaint was the lack of auto-tagging for cuisine types.

Everyday Chef and Recipe Platform

30 Oct 2024 Cooking

All of my friends wanted my mom's recipes when they came round for my birthday. Now I realised she doesn't store anything - it's all in her head! Then the same thing happened with my friend although she writes hers down in a diary (how old school). And then I noticed so many food influencers posting their recipes in the descriptions of their tiktok/insta posts. And then as I started searching for recipes online, I found the websites full of ads and popups and terrible UI. I only cared about the ingredients and the method. So I created this, and have been having a lot of fun with it.I hope to see up and coming food influencers using this as a platform directly to link with their social media posts, engaging and competing with an already interested audience.Technical talk: Building a fullstack application so quickly and being able to publish all single handedly was a fantastic experience. The SEO is fantastic! My site ranks 1st on Google for related searches.Edit: There are some links in the footer that may not lead anywhere. These are under construction.

Users reported several issues with the service, including a bug in the 'report a bug' link, 500 errors when using spaces in usernames or recipe names, and various errors in the explore section such as bad recipe displays and incorrect Thai dish information. One user mentioned that using the service helped them practice their testing skills, which they found beneficial.

Users reported several issues: the link provided does not work, there is a 500 error when spaces are used as input, and there are multiple errors in the explore feature including bad recipe displays and incorrect information for Thai dishes.

Aggregate recipes and make shopping lists, is it useful though?

28 May 2024 Cooking

I built a small app where you can pull recipes from your favourite websites and generate an interactive shopping to then buy the ingredients to make them. You can give it a try for free, no payment details required. This idea will hardly set the world alight but it scratched an itch for me and wanted to blow the cobwebs off of shipping a product, so I thought I would throw something together quickly and would love any feedback on it if possible! This idea came about from- my lack of cooking skills requiring me to reference recipes I’ve already made before- having to go on a deep dive through WhatsApp to find the recipes that had been sent to me- writing the aggregated shopping list for multiple recipes took way too long- alot of recipe websites not getting to the cooking steps quick enoughI have had issues getting the AI model to scrape the websites correctly. I had to add the ability of users to copy & paste steps and ingredients into the form to improve accuracy. If anyone has any tips on improving the accuracy of models (using Open AI Assistants), that would be great! Thanks for your time if you check it out, it is very much appreciated!I'm also on X if you want to discuss there!https://x.com/jaackevans_

I made a recipe manager, import recipes by URL and get rid of the ads

01 May 2024 Productivity

Dealing with hundreds of recipe bookmarks was becoming impossible, needed a way to save them and organize them.So I made a recipe manager, with the main goal of being simple to use and navigate. And it should look good on any device I happen to be using in the kitchen: phone, tablet.Regarding pricing, I see it being free for most basic features, and having a Premium plan for more advanced features (like importing recipes from pictures or videos). Which means Premium would always be completely optional, not forced. Hopefully just £2.90 per month. But until there are more features, it's totally free.
