Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea of a map integrated with GPT to automatically identify locations and states during travel planning enters a crowded space, which puts it in the 'Swamp' category. We found 12 similar products already, so there's a good amount of competition. While some users show interest in AI-powered travel planning, the engagement, measured by the average number of comments on similar products, is low. The key here is to acknowledge that many have tried and failed. To succeed, you'd need to offer something radically different or cater to a very specific, underserved niche. Positive user sentiment exists, so there is an opening in the market, just be careful.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly research why existing travel planning solutions, especially those using AI, haven't fully satisfied users. Look closely at user reviews and criticisms of competitors like PLAN by ixigo and others listed. Identify the specific pain points they experience and where current solutions fall short.
  2. Instead of a broad travel planning tool, focus on a very specific niche or user group. This could be adventure travelers, families with young children, solo female travelers, or people with specific dietary needs. Tailoring the map and GPT integration to their unique needs can create a more compelling offering.
  3. Before building a standalone app, consider developing tools or plugins that enhance existing travel platforms or mapping services. For example, a GPT-powered plugin for Google Maps that automatically identifies points of interest based on user preferences could be a valuable addition.
  4. Explore adjacent problems in the travel space that might be less competitive. This could include tools for managing travel documents, creating personalized travel guides, or connecting travelers with local experiences.
  5. Given the competitive landscape and the 'Swamp' category assessment, carefully evaluate whether this is the best use of your time and resources. There may be other startup opportunities with a higher potential for success.
  6. Address concerns raised by users of similar products regarding transparency and trust. If you proceed, be open about your team, your technology, and your business model. Consider offering a free trial or demo to allow users to experience the value of your product before committing to a subscription.

Questions

  1. What unique data sources or GPT models can you leverage to provide travel recommendations that are significantly better than existing solutions?
  2. How can you build trust and transparency into your platform to overcome user concerns about anonymous startups in the travel planning space?
  3. What specific user segment is most likely to benefit from your map and GPT integration, and what are their unmet needs that you can address?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Scenic – explore and find interesting places along a route using GPT4

19 Jul 2023 Travel Maps

Hi HN,Made a small app because I found myself doing this manually quite a few times using GPT-4. You put in where you're starting and where you're going, and what kind of places you want to see along the way, and it'll find places and identify a reasonable(ish) path. It's very simple but it has some nice features (e.g. you can get a Google Maps link). The place features you search for can be basically anything and can be as opinionated as you'd like. This is just for fun, but please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Great prototype, suggests route recording and sharing feature.

21 Aug 2024 Travel

Hello HN,## Introducing GuideToGoGuideToGo is an AI-powered audio guide app that brings the world to your fingertips. With a database of over 1.2 million locations worldwide, it provides detailed information and answers your questions in real-time. It's like having a personal tour guide in your pocket, tailored to your unique travel needs and preferences.GuideToGo is available for free for both iOS (https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6503728729?pt=12707...) and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.guidetogo....).Your feedback is incredibly valuable to me as I continue to improve and enhance GuideToGo. I would love it if you could please try it out and share your thoughts. For those curious about the tech stack, the client was built using React Native with Expo, and Elixir powers the backend.## Why?For the last 10+ years, my family generally travels for a month every year. Being a curious family, we love learning about the places we visit, so we often use tour guides. However, almost every time we encountered several issues:- Unanswered questions due to rushed schedules - Inability to explore at our own pace - High costs (tour guides often charge $15 per person on average, which adds up quickly for a family of four)Determined to find a better solution before our trip to the UK and Mediterranean early this year, I couldn't find any existing apps that met our needs. This inspired me to develop GuideToGo to address these common travel pain points.## About MeI've worked in the software industry for the last 20 years, starting as an intern web developer in college and rising to roles like Staff Engineer, Manager, and eventually senior engineering leadership at top companies like ServiceNow and ServiceTitan (VP, Engineering). Along the way, I also founded and successfully exited two startups. This year in April, I decided to take a break from my day-to-day job to explore the world and recharge for the next chapter of my life and career. Feel free to reach out to me over LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/munjalapatel) or X (https://x.com/munjalapatel).Thank you for your time, and happy travels!Best, Munjal A Patel

Planit Earth – Your AI-Powered Travel Planner

Greetings Hacker News family! I'm excited to share with you the first version of our AI-powered travel planner.I'm a digital nomad/tech geek who loves traveling but admittedly am lazy about trip planning, so I created a tool built on ChatGPT that could help me jump start that. I simply enter a destination, the # of days, a budget preference, and it spits out a full travel itinerary with highlighted points of interest. The problem: Trip planning can be overwhelming and time consuming. While some may find excitement in planning, many folks are overwhelmed by the prospect of figuring out where to go and what to do once you arrive at your destination. The typically requires copious amounts of research in order to uncover the major attractions, determine their relative proximities, and weave everything together into an actionable travel itinerary. To complicate things, everyone has different preferences for the types of activities they would like to partake in.The solution: Planit Earth aims to help travelers shortcut this process by leveraging the power of AI to generate personalized itineraries with just a click. The vision over time is for Planit Earth to become the go-to resource for your trip planning needs.Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Cool release, useful for itinerary planning.

Needs input for stay location and airport.

50+ Location Analysis by GPT-4

It's remarkable to think about the amount of work that went into my tasks back in 2017 when I worked as an analyst for a retail company. Much of my analysis was designed to assist store managers and the eCommerce team, ensuring the success of the company's omnichannel strategy.Typically, my day started with location data obtained from market research firms. I'd input this data into our database, use SQL for querying, run the relevant R or Python code, and then send the report to the respective requester. In summary, this entire process took about 2-3 days and required writing at least 50 lines of code. Now, with the advancements in LLMs, I believe traditional methods of analyzing location data will soon be obsolete, especially when it comes to deriving straightforward insights. So, I've enhanced GPT-4 (In-context learning) with the location data from over 75,000 US locations, allowing me to query it directly.(Background)I launched Zipscore last year, aiming to provide small businesses with easy access to location data. Many large firms charge as much as $2000 for such a service, not including consultation fees. While Zipscore didn't initially gain the traction I'd hoped for, I've persisted in developing it. Recently, I've felt that it's the right time to pivot and transform it into an AI Co-Pilot for location data and market analysis.I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you might have. Thank you!

TravelGPT Adventures: Your Guide to Experiencing the World with GPT

Users are requesting a hint or example before signing up for the service. There are concerns about the success and transparency of anonymous startups.

Users criticize the product for requiring account sign-up without prior notice, which discourages them from exploring the service. Additionally, the anonymity of the startup makes it feel cold and untrustworthy.
