Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea of an event-matching app that connects users based on interests, age, and facilitates group chats to ease anxieties aligns with a crowded space. Our analysis, based on 6 similar products, suggests 'high' confidence in this assessment, but this also means high competition. The average engagement for similar products is low, with an average of only 1 comment per product. This suggests it's a 'Swamp' category, where many mediocre solutions exist and struggle to gain traction. Given this landscape, succeeding requires offering a genuinely differentiated value proposition, which is hard. Unless you find something REALLY unique about your idea, it's going to be hard to stand out.

Recommendations

  1. Before investing significant time and resources, conduct thorough research to understand why existing event-matching solutions haven't achieved widespread success. Identify their shortcomings and areas where your app can offer a genuinely unique and compelling alternative.
  2. If you decide to proceed, narrow your focus to a specific niche or demographic that is currently underserved by existing event platforms. Tailor your app's features and marketing efforts to cater to their unique needs and preferences. This could be based on age (e.g., events for people over 50), specific interests (e.g., board game meetups), or location.
  3. Instead of directly competing with established event platforms, consider developing tools or features that can enhance their existing functionality. This could involve creating plugins or integrations that address specific pain points for event organizers or attendees.
  4. Explore adjacent problems within the event space that might be more promising. For instance, instead of matching people to events, what about tools that enhance the event experience itself? This could be tools that provide real-time feedback for speakers, that help local businesses track foot traffic during events, or anything else that is tangentially related and brings new value.
  5. Based on feedback from similar product launches, ensure event data is current and accurate. Outdated event information was a key criticism. Implement robust data verification processes.
  6. Address potential legal concerns proactively, especially regarding data privacy and user safety. Consult with legal counsel to ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  7. Given the prevalence of invalid invite links in similar apps, rigorously test and monitor all links within your app to ensure they are functioning correctly.

Questions

  1. What is the single most unique feature or aspect of your app that differentiates it from existing event-matching platforms, and why will users find it significantly more compelling?
  2. Considering the low engagement observed in similar products, what specific strategies will you implement to foster a vibrant and active community within your app?
  3. How will you ensure the accuracy and timeliness of event data, and what measures will you take to address and resolve any legal concerns related to data privacy and user safety?

I made an app to help strangers pair up and check on each other

10 Nov 2023 Android

Hi HN ! I've struggled with anxiety for most of my life. But I was lucky to have a supporting family and friends. Not everyone has this chance. So I made Wiro Talk to help strangers pair up and check on each other. Check it out and tell me what you think. It's an mvp so yes it's using discord at the moment.

The initial issue of an invalid Discord invite was resolved and identified as an anomaly.

The primary criticism is that the Discord invite link provided is invalid, preventing users from joining the community or accessing further information.
