Idea type: Run Away

Multiple attempts have failed with clear negative feedback. Continuing down this path would likely waste your time and resources when better opportunities exist elsewhere.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

The idea of creating a coloring app where kids can easily color images from URLs or uploads falls into a highly competitive space. With 27 similar products already identified, expect a crowded market. While the average engagement for these types of apps is medium (8 comments), indicating some user interest, the lack of positive 'use' or 'buy' signals suggests that existing solutions might already be satisfying user needs or that monetization is tricky. Many similar products face criticisms regarding biased AI, copyright issues, and generating inappropriate content, which could be significant pitfalls. Also, there are reports of negative feedback about low quality of the output images. Before proceeding, carefully evaluate how your app will differentiate itself and address the existing pain points in the market.

Recommendations

  1. Given the crowded market and the criticisms of existing coloring apps, your first step should be to deeply analyze the negative reviews and comments from similar products. Identify specific areas where current apps fall short, such as biased AI, copyright violations, or poor image quality. Focus on addressing these issues in your app's design and functionality.
  2. Instead of directly competing with existing apps, consider if your skills could solve a related but different problem. Are there adjacent areas within children's entertainment or education where your expertise could be better applied? This pivot could lead to a less crowded market with untapped potential.
  3. If you've already started building your app, evaluate if the underlying technology could be repurposed for a different application. The image processing or coloring algorithms might be valuable in other creative tools or educational resources.
  4. Conduct user interviews with parents, teachers, and children who have tried similar coloring apps. Ask them about their likes, dislikes, and unmet needs. This qualitative feedback can provide valuable insights for refining your app's features and addressing user pain points.
  5. Use the insights gained from user interviews and competitive analysis to identify a unique value proposition for your app. What specific problem will your app solve that others don't? Will it offer superior image quality, a wider range of coloring options, or enhanced safety features for children? This differentiation is crucial for standing out in a crowded market.
  6. Incorporate safety mechanisms like content filtering to ensure that your application is not misused. A reoccurring criticism is that AI-generated coloring pages might show adult/dystopian themes, or other forms of inappropriate content for kids. The best way to handle this is to never expose the raw AI features to the end user, and pre-process all images to ensure that they comply with your safety guidelines.
  7. Carefully consider the legal issues around copyright before launching. There were concerns about some services violating well-known trademarks like Disney or Pokemon, which could result in significant legal risk.

Questions

  1. Given the criticism around AI-generated content sometimes resulting in disturbing or uncanny images, how will you ensure that your app consistently generates appropriate and engaging coloring pages for children?
  2. How will you address potential copyright issues when users upload or link to images from the internet, and what measures will you take to prevent the app from being used to infringe on existing intellectual property?
  3. Considering that existing coloring apps haven't demonstrated strong 'buy' signals, what monetization strategy will you employ, and how will you ensure that your app provides enough unique value to justify user payments or subscriptions?

Creating custom coloring pages from photos. Great for parents/teachers

13 Mar 2024 Design Tools

Making coloring pages out of your own personal photos is a fun and creative way to engage kids (and adults!) with art. Instead of generic coloring pages, you can turn special memories into custom works of art just waiting to be filled in with color.

The Show HN product, an AI model for photo to line art conversion, has received mixed feedback. Users criticized its racial bias, inaccurate representations, and tendency to alter appearances, with specific issues in depicting black hair and skin tones. The edge-detection was deemed janky, and there were concerns about image artifacting. Some users were dissuaded by the email signup requirement, suggesting privacy concerns. Others noted the potential for the tool in creating coloring pages and comic strips but were disappointed by the lack of accuracy and detail. There were also suggestions for improving user experience, like adding a progress bar and job cancellation options.

Users criticized the app for misrepresenting diverse hairstyles and having biased training data, particularly underrepresenting minorities. The app's artistic license and context understanding were questioned, with complaints about inaccurate results, poor edge-detection, and image artifacting. Concerns were raised about privacy, with users unhappy about the requirement for email signup and photo storage. The service's user experience was also criticized for lacking progress indicators, cancellation options, and misleading homepage examples. Additionally, there were technical issues like slow processing, and a lack of detail in high-frequency objects like foliage.

A Coloring App for Everyone

04 Nov 2024 Design Tools

Hello!I made a coloring / sticker book app that’s free - for those who often find themselves buying coloring books for their children/nieces/nephews as I do. Works on iPad and your iPhone. Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

Users are requesting an Android-based version of the product. Some suggest testing on iOS first to find product-market fit and SEO patterns before expanding. There are concerns about the difficulty of releasing Android apps for individual developers, especially with Google's new requirements affecting personal accounts after November 13, 2023. However, it is noted that publishing APKs on Github releases is easy.

Users criticized the lack of an Android version, stating it is not worth maintaining two platforms initially. They also mentioned that testing requirements are a major bottleneck and that the product is out of touch with Google's latest requirements. Additionally, users were unhappy that the product is only available on the Play Store.

Custom coloring pages for kids and adults

30 Jan 2024 Kids

I built colorbliss.art back in September basically so that I could spend less time scrolling on google looking for coloring pages.A typical scrolling session with my five year old would be:Him: "Dad, can I have a coloring page"Me: "Sure, what kind do you want"Him: "Something with dinosaurs, and maybe spiderman"Me: "I'm not sure if we're going to find that"Him: "Just look it up dad"Me: "Ok...hm, I"m not finding that"Him: "Just keep scrolling dad"Me: scrolling, scrollingHim: "Just keep scrolling dad"*repeat forever*I thought this would be a great use case for AI - creating the actual coloring sheet he wanted. It takes a text prompt (Spiderman at the Eiffel Tower, Skeletons on parade) and makes a coloring page in about 10s or less. We've had a lot of fun using it together, and so I thought I'd share it here as well.Would love any feedback!

Loves idea, frustrated with low-quality Bible coloring pages.

Free create high-quality coloring sheets online no login In

When I have free time, I need to play with my children at home, especially when my children asked me to draw him a dinosaur. I was embarrassed because my poor drawing ability left me at a loss, so my original idea was born.I hope to quickly generate black and white images that children can color, which can not only free their hands, but also allow children to quickly improve their painting and coloring abilities, and enhance their sense of accomplishment (because they will feel that they are themselves drawn). Therefore, I launched an AI tool that can generate high-quality coloring materials, it is called ColorifyAI , is currently completely free and can be used online without logging in. Its main functions are as follows:● 1. Completely free, without any restrictions, you can use it online after opening it.● 2. Vincentian picture: Enter the prompt word to generate a clear black and white artistic picture.● 3. Free download, one-click download, print it out and color it for your children.● 4. Animation generation, quickly generate various animation characters with one click.● 5. The response is very fast and you can get the desired image instantly. All of these are provided for free, you are welcome to experience it. This may not be a good idea, but it should not be buried because of it. I hope people who see this idea can give me more feedback, and I will decide whether to continue based on this. Update iteration.Wish you well!

The comments include a dead comment, a flagged comment, an accusation of astroturfing, and a remark about talking to oneself. The overall tone suggests issues with comment moderation and potential concerns about authenticity.

The product has been criticized for astroturfing, with users accusing it of creating fake positive reviews. Additionally, there are concerns about the developer engaging in conversations with themselves to create a false sense of engagement.

ColoringsAI – Custom Coloring Pages from Ideas (My Daughter's Idea)

27 Nov 2024 Kids

I created ColoringsAI for my 4-year-old daughter, who loves coloring but sometimes gets bored with the same old designs. With this app, you can type in any idea—like “a unicorn in a magical forest” or “a rocket flying through space”—and instantly turn it into a printable coloring page. It’s been a hit in our house, and now I’m sharing it with everyone!Check it out at ColoringsAI and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your feedback or any fun ideas you come up with!

Users appreciate the no-signup requirement and the concept, including AI-generated titles and descriptions. There's admiration for the cute and dystopian imagery, but concerns are raised about inappropriate content for children, copyright issues, and the potential for generating sensitive material. Technical issues like freezing and incorrect results are noted. Suggestions include a donation link and donating crayons to charity. Questions about the AI model and requests for more details on picture creation are present. There's skepticism about the integration of language and image models and the adherence to prompts.

Users criticized the product for dystopian imagery, inappropriate content for children, and adult themes. Concerns about the use of LLM in user-facing applications, incorrect results, and freezing issues were noted. The product's lack of originality, potential copyright issues, especially with litigious companies like Disney, and the risk of cease and desist upon monetization were highlighted. Technical limitations such as handling complex scenes, limited training data, and messy outputs were mentioned. Specific issues with content generation rules for Pokemon and swastikas, and the risk of generating offensive content were also pointed out.

Color.lol – Fun AI coloring page generator for adults and kids

17 Aug 2024 Design Tools Kids

I built Color with my wife Jessica, who is trying to break into the AI scene as a product designer. This is her first AI product, and she designed it from the ground up to be fun for non-technical folks who don't have any experience or interest in AI.There's WordMode, which is your traditional text-to-image image generation prompting experience. Then there's KidMode, where you create new coloring pages by selecting a series of image icons like "Bear", "Baseball Hat," and "Glasses".It's super fun to try with littles (2-5 years old), they love it. There's something magical about selecting a few icons, clicking generate, seeing a unique coloring page on the screen, printing it, and coloring together. You can generate 10 coloring pages for free, so if you give it a try please share what you made, and let me know if there's anything you'd like to see improved. We'd love to hear any feedback or feature requests!--Also if you or someone you know is looking for a product designer for an AI project, hit up Jessica's website for contact info: https://www.jessicagillis.com/

Love KidMode, suggest leaning into kidpix-like UX

We made an interactive coloring experience for kids

Hi HN community!Proud to have recently become a founder myself and now to submit a "Show HN".We are Dibulo, a young startup which is on a mission to redefine coloring sessions for kids! We have built our first worlds, sold our first coloring books and now we want to let the world know about us :) So far we have been praised by parents, and also got pretty good feedback from institutions like daycares and elementary school teachers. What sets our coloring experience apart? Not only do we bring vibrant templates on paper to life on screens, but we also introduce a captivating group activity. Picture this: kids enthusiastically coloring away, their creations showcased prominently on a big screen for all to admire. For us it is crucial that the user experience is smooth and easy. Our platform works in pretty much all modern browsers and on all major devices (PC, laptop, tablet, AndroidTV / FireTV). Setting up a coloring session on Dibulo takes less time than a kid can color our templates and uploading is as easy as snapping a picture. You can even share the coloring session with your family and friends and if they like they can participate and upload their drawings too (remotely).Feel free to download and print our free templates and try them with your kids / nephews / at your daycare.Thank you for checking us out! Looking forward to receiving feedback!

Users appreciate the simplified versions of Little Planet games, highlighting the enjoyment kids get from coloring templates without the need for a subscription or app. The duck race idea is particularly well-loved.

The product is criticized for offering simplified versions of existing games, which may lack originality and fail to provide a unique or engaging experience for users.
