Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market with your health and weight loss app, as indicated by the 20 similar products we found. This high number suggests significant competition but also validates the demand for such solutions. Given the 'Freemium' category, users are generally interested in using these apps, but tend to resist paying for them. This is pretty typical, so you'll need to identify a strategy to offer enough value in a premium version to convert free users into paying customers. The average number of comments on similar products is moderate, so there's some engagement, but capturing user attention and maintaining it will be crucial. The feedback from similar launches highlights the importance of accuracy, transparency, and a user-friendly experience.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by identifying the specific user segments that derive the most value from the free version of your app. Understand their pain points and usage patterns to inform your premium feature development. For example, if users are heavily reliant on the calorie tracker, consider a premium feature that offers advanced macro analysis or personalized recipe recommendations based on their dietary needs.
  2. Develop premium features that directly address the needs of your identified user segments and offer significantly enhanced value. This could include personalized coaching, advanced analytics, integration with wearable devices, or access to exclusive content. Feedback from similar products indicates that users appreciate features like Apple Watch support and offline accessibility, so consider incorporating these into your premium offering.
  3. Consider offering team or family plans to cater to groups of users rather than just individuals. This approach can increase the perceived value of your premium subscription and encourage more users to upgrade. For instance, offer a family plan that allows multiple users to track their progress and share recipes and meal plans.
  4. Provide personalized help or consulting services as part of your premium offering. This could include one-on-one coaching sessions with registered dietitians or personalized meal planning services. Given the concerns about misleading nutritional information in similar apps, offering expert guidance can be a significant differentiator.
  5. Test different pricing approaches with small groups of users to determine the optimal pricing strategy for your premium features. Experiment with various pricing tiers and subscription models to find the sweet spot that maximizes revenue without alienating your free users. Based on criticisms from similar products, avoid hiding pricing information behind email submission forms, as this creates a negative initial experience.
  6. Prioritize transparency and accuracy in your nutrition information to address user concerns about misleading data. Provide detailed information about food processing, fiber content, and net carbs. Ensure that calorie counts are consistent and accurate across all food items in your database.
  7. Actively solicit feedback from your users and use it to continuously improve your app. Pay close attention to user reviews and comments, and address any concerns or criticisms promptly. Consider implementing a user feedback forum or survey to gather insights and identify areas for improvement.
  8. Focus on building a user-friendly and intuitive interface to enhance the overall user experience. Simplify the process of tracking meals and workouts, and provide clear and concise information about nutrition and health metrics. Based on feedback from similar products, ensure that your app is easy to navigate and that users can quickly access the features they need.

Questions

  1. Given the high competition in the health and weight loss app market, what unique features or functionalities can you offer to differentiate your app from existing solutions and attract a loyal user base?
  2. How will you ensure the accuracy and credibility of the nutritional information provided in your app, and how will you address user concerns about misleading data or oversimplification of information?
  3. What specific strategies will you employ to convert free users into paying customers, and how will you ensure that your premium features offer enough value to justify the subscription cost?

I Built a Lightweight Nutrition Tracker for the iPhone

25 Nov 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN,I was overweight in college and started my weight loss journey using an app called MyFitnessPal. Tracking calories not only helped me lose weight but also taught me a lot about nutrition and helped establish healthy eating habits that continue to benefit me. However, I’ve always been frustrated by the existing nutrition tracking apps. Many are slow and bloated, lack accurate nutrition data, or don’t respect user privacy. I wanted to build something that I’d love using myself.A few things that make FitBee stand out:* Fast, lightweight and to the point - The app is just about tracking your nutrition and makes that front and center. I've tried to make things that you do often as simple as possible (e.g., log yesterday's breakfast).* Robust Apple Health support - You can read/write data to Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises.* Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.* Photo Logging - You can take a photo of a food and get an estimate of the calories and macros. It's not 100% accurate but it's been super helpful for me when eating at a restaurant that doesn't have published nutrition info.* Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.* No Ads - The app is monetized via a subscription.* Subscription - Most of the features are free, but there are a few which require a monthly or annual subscription ($4.99/month or $39.99/year).You can try FitBee here: https://apple.co/4aGUw5X. I'd love your feedback!

Psychology and overeating impact weight loss more than calorie counting.

Calorie counting less effective for weight loss.

I made a weight-loss app using OpenAI APIs

11 May 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN, wanted to show you my weekend project (several weekends actually).A few months back I started experimenting with LLMs as a way to estimate calories/macros and give useful feedback. The results were good enough that I felt like something was there. I wanted to shed a few pounds so I built out a web app for myself. A few friends tried it and everyone said "this needs to be a native app".So I converted the Rails app to just be an API backend and built an iOS app in SwiftUI. It just got approved in the (US) app store last week.https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fatgpt-ai-weight-loss-coach/id...Feature-wise it's pretty simple compared to MFP or Noom. But I've been logging my food every day for a while now and am down 12 pounds. It's been really fun to build and I'm trying to release a new version every week.Happy to hear any feedback or answer questions.

Intuitive nutrition information

29 Dec 2023 Health & Fitness

Hey everyone, I've been building this nutrition tracker and calorie counter recently, after being frustrated by existing products for ages. I built a similar app 8 years ago [1], but came back to this problem again since there are still no good solutions here. Lmk your thoughts and improvement ideas :)[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10077618

Users highlighted concerns about misleading nutritional information, particularly regarding sugars and food processing. They suggested improvements like adding fiber and net carb data, detailed food processing information, and consistent calorie counts. Some users questioned the need for the app to determine food processing levels and sought a rule of thumb for healthy eating. There were mixed opinions on the user experience, with some praising the simplicity and others wanting more detailed integration. Comments also touched on the credibility of organic certifications, the processing of oat milk, and the effectiveness of existing nutrition trackers like MacroFactor and Cronometer.

Users criticized the product for misleading nutritional information, particularly regarding sugars and carbohydrates, and the lack of fiber content. There were concerns about the oversimplification of data, the need for better quantification, and transparency in labeling. The honor system for nutrition labels and the effects of processed sugars were also questioned. Criticisms extended to the user experience, such as the need for clarity in meal splitting and food weight, and the product's limited focus on macros. Additionally, there were mentions of GMOs, the high cost of tracking farm chemicals, and comparisons to similar services like Cronometer.

Delite Meal Planner - Lose weight the delicious way

The app generates meal plans that include delicious and healthy versions of your go-to comfort foods. You can enjoy the foods you love while still making progress towards your weight loss goals.

The product launch was well-received, with users praising the slick UI and expressing excitement for the meal planning solution. A common concern was the requirement to provide an email address to view pricing, which some users found undesirable. Congratulations were offered to Artur Lebedenko on the launch.

Users criticize the practice of hiding pricing information behind an email submission form. This requirement is seen as a significant barrier to entry, deterring potential users from exploring and trying the product. The lack of upfront pricing creates a negative initial experience.

An intuitive, no subscription, privacy-first calorie tracker for iPhone

29 Mar 2023 Health & Fitness

Hi all, over the last 2 years I've been on and off building my app for iPhone.Caloree is basically a freemium calorie tracker/food diary with the ability to only track calories. This sets it apart from the competition which usually allows logging a gazillion macros. This (hopefully) makes it easier for users to log their food. Feedback so far has been great. The app launched today, which I am quite proud of. It's been 2 years next to raising 2 small kids which meant to often sacrifice the project when it was moving along nicely and spending way less time on it than I would have wanted to. It was a real test on my patience which is usually not that great :)Let me know if you have any questions or feedback is also greatly appreciated!- Rudy

Users praised the launch and appreciated the offline feature. There were requests for additional features and questions about calorie calculation, specifically BMR vs TDEE for weight loss. Discussions also focused on the use of BMR in weight loss and calorie tracking apps.

Users criticized the product for having a low calorie limit and calculation. They also mentioned that using BMR is less appropriate than TDEE for accurate measurements. Additionally, there were concerns about the source of the food database.

ChatGPT for calorie tracking. Frictionless diet and exercise tracking

07 Nov 2024 Health & Fitness

Hi, I'm Steve and I've built this mobile app to solve my very long-standing problem of not consistently using any calorie tracking apps due to the poor UX (many clicks, too much friction). So, although I am not the best UI/UX designer, I have tried to remove friction at every corner with Journable. This applies to the1. Tracking experience: Chat-based interface (think ChatGPT) to log food/exercise 2. Onboarding experience: No login screen, no measurements or goals, straight to the main chat window 3. Photo entries: Just take a picture of your plate and doneThat said, I'm not the best UI/UX designer so I would really appreciate any feedback on the app, and I welcome any and all comments & suggestions. Should I make it easier? Faster? Simpler? Does it need more color? Keen to hear it all!

Good app, no login needed, needs meal editing and saving.

Feedback per meal is repetitive, prefer daily feedback.

App to Track Meals Automatically

12 May 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey everyone!I've been diving into a project that stemmed from a familiar frustration. I found myself hitting a wall with exercise routines and healthy meals—keeping things fresh and staying on top of progress felt like a challenge. None of the existing solutions quite clicked for me.So, I decided to channel my tech skills into something snappy and efficient to tackle this dilemma head-on. The result? I've crafted an initial version of a web app that packs a punch:Snap a pic to track your meals effortlessly. Instantly get meal suggestions tailored to your dietary preferences (think vegan, Mediterranean, paleo, keto...) with a simple tap, thanks to some nifty machine learning.website: eliteolympus.comI'm already gearing up for future features like exercise tracking and suggestions, lifestyle analytics, progress charts, wearables integration, daily goals, a calendar view—you name it!I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas on where to take this next!

Camera-based meal tracking app could be helpful.

Difficult to achieve accuracy in meal tracking.

Speech to Calories (just speak to log your calories automatically)

26 Aug 2024 Health & Fitness

I started this as a fasting tracker app, but then I realized I was using ChatGPT a lot for tracking my meals. It was a bit inconvenient as I couldn't make edits easily, no dedicated UI etc. There were a lot of apps that have photo to calories functionality (this app has it too) but I find it much less useful than speaking, as I already weigh my stuff and actually read the nutritional info. So I've made this app, and I'd appreciate any sort of feedback.

A Simple Nutrition Tracker for iOS

I've tracked my calories and macros off and on for years, and always felt that the existing apps were somewhat bloated and clunky to use.To scratch my own itch, I built FitBee to make tracking a bit less of a pain in the butt.A few things that make FitBee stand out:* Fast and lightweight - It's completely native, (mostly built using SwiftUI) and I've tried to make it as fast to launch/use as possible.* Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.* Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.* Robust Apple Health support - You can sync data with Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises. You can try FitBee here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fitbee-calorie-macro-counter/i...If you end up trying it, I'd love any feedback!
