Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

Your idea for a mobile app that allows users to create drawings using their camera falls into the 'Freemium' category. This means users generally enjoy using similar apps, but are hesitant to pay for them. With 7 similar products already in the market, competition is significant, so differentiating your app is crucial. While there is no explicit 'use' or 'buy' signal data from the provided metrics, the medium engagement (average of 7 comments) suggests there's interest in this type of app. The good news is, based on the other apps and their comments, there's a good chance people will want to USE your app, the bad news is, they are used to using it for free. This highlights the core challenge: how to deliver such disproportionate value that users overcome this reluctance and willingly pay, or, alternatively, identify a specific niche or user segment that is willing to pay for the enhanced capabilities your app offers. Building this app has merit, but success hinges on effectively differentiating it and strategizing monetization.

Recommendations

  1. Given that users are generally hesitant to pay for drawing apps, you need to carefully identify which users derive the most value from the free version of your app. Focus on understanding their needs and usage patterns through surveys, in-app analytics, and user interviews. The AR Drawing app praised pre-separated pictures simplifying the drawing process, this might be a good starting point.
  2. Based on your understanding of high-value free users, develop premium features that cater to their specific needs and enhance their experience. This could include advanced editing tools, exclusive filters, cloud storage, collaboration features, or removing watermarks. The 'Sketch AI Drawing To Art Maker' app had users who loved the transformed images. Consider a premium AI component.
  3. Instead of focusing solely on individual users, consider offering team-based subscriptions with features tailored to collaborative drawing and design projects. This could include shared workspaces, version control, and team-specific templates. This shifts the value proposition from individual entertainment to collaborative productivity, potentially increasing willingness to pay.
  4. Offer personalized help, tutorials, or even one-on-one consulting services to users who want to improve their drawing skills. This could be bundled as part of a premium subscription or offered as a separate add-on service. This capitalizes on user's desire to improve their skills.
  5. Before fully launching your premium features, conduct A/B testing with small groups of users to gauge their willingness to pay for different pricing approaches and feature combinations. This allows you to optimize your monetization strategy based on real-world data and user feedback. Consider different lengths of trial periods or freemium credits.
  6. Actively monitor the discussions and criticisms surrounding your competitors. For instance, the 'Draw3D' app faced criticism regarding image handling and public domain concerns. Make sure your app prioritizes user privacy and control over their created content by providing clear options for deletion and usage rights.
  7. Since several similar apps received mixed reviews on their AI capabilities, invest in high-quality AI integration. If you plan to integrate AI features like those offered by 'Sketch AI Drawing To Art Maker' or 'Turbo Paint', make sure your AI model is robust and produces consistently impressive results to avoid user disappointment. Also consider transparency, some users were curious which AI model was used (DALL-E or Midjourney).
  8. In the early stages, focus heavily on content generation showcasing the unique capabilities of your app. Create tutorials, examples, and user stories that demonstrate how your app can be used to create amazing drawings. This will help attract new users and build a strong community around your app.

Questions

  1. Given the concerns raised about the use of potentially stolen artwork in similar apps, how will you ensure the originality and ethical sourcing of the content used in your app's AI features or pre-designed templates?
  2. Considering that many users are accustomed to free drawing apps, what specific, unique value proposition will you offer in your premium version that justifies the cost and compels users to upgrade?
  3. How will you balance the user experience between free and paid users to encourage conversions without alienating your free user base, and what metrics will you track to measure the effectiveness of your freemium model?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Painting app with many brushes, reference drawing and auto color picker

24 Apr 2024 Design Tools

It is a free drawing app that I took the courage to finally reveal after years of development.Main idea was to make drawing from reference effortless but also make an app that makes sketching very realistic especially with pencil. After Importing a reference image the "peek" button and additional slider are unlocked, allowing for quick preview of the reference image and fast changing of the reference image opacity so that you can trace or paint over the reference. The app is still in beta so expect bugs and crashes. In the near future I am going to create a website to describe its features in detail and post some tutorial videos.Apart from the "peek" button and the reference opacity slider there are more unique features for example each brush has 5 toggles, eraser allows you to erase with the given brush, pen pressure and pen opacity toggles, blending allows to blend colors with that brush and the last one is auto color picking, when reference image is available the brush will automatically peek color from the reference image while you paint - simple magic ;).Thus far I was the only one testing the app so I am quite scared about the feedback especially worried that it will crash for you, in case it happens please let me know here or via email contact.kreska@gmail.comI am exhausted today (working to publish the app) but will do my best to reply to any questions you may have.Thank you and enjoy! With regards,Michal Bednarczykcontact.kreska@gmail.com

Users appreciate the smooth brush strokes but find them somewhat unnatural. The product works better with a Wacom tablet and retains sketches from prior sessions. The first update has fixed bugs and is requesting contributions from artists.

The brush strokes in the product do not accurately mimic real painting, leading to a less authentic user experience.

Draw3D - Convert your drawing to a realistic photo

27 Mar 2023 Design Tools Art Drawing

Convert your Drawing to a realistic photo

The AI tool is praised for its clever implementation and usefulness to painters, with excitement surrounding its ability to transform sketches into photorealistic images while maintaining facial structure. A question was raised about compatibility with human sketches for colorization. There's a user concern regarding public domain and the absence of a deletion option. Some users congratulated the launch team, including Edworking, who also asked for support for their own launch. The tool is viewed as impressive and amazing, with users excited to try it.

The primary criticism revolves around image handling. Users are concerned that images uploaded become public domain without an option for deletion. This lack of control over image privacy and removal is a significant drawback.

Sketch AI Drawing To Art Maker - Turn any of your idea or sketch into an artwork with AI

You have always wanted to draw a beautiful picture but it was too difficult. Now, you can type a sketch or you can sketch directly on your phone and then enter a prompt for that painting idea, wait a few seconds and the AI will come up with amazing results.

The Sketch AI Drawing To Art Maker app launch on Product Hunt received mixed feedback. Many users congratulated the launch and expressed excitement to test the app, praising its innovation, potential, and usefulness, especially as a cheaper alternative to hiring a designer. Some users loved the transformed images, describing them as beautiful and artistic. However, some users reported unimpressive results, with one alleging the use of stolen art examples. Users also inquired about the text-to-image feature and the AI model used (DALL-E or Midjourney).

The primary criticisms revolve around the app's reliance on potentially stolen artwork, leading to concerns about misleading customers. Additionally, the app's output quality is perceived as heavily dependent on the initial input image, with desirable results mainly achieved when starting from a picture.
