Idea type: Run Away

Multiple attempts have failed with clear negative feedback. Continuing down this path would likely waste your time and resources when better opportunities exist elsewhere.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're aiming to create a website to test startup ideas, which puts you in a crowded space. We found 21 similar products, indicating high competition. The average engagement is medium, with around 4 comments per product. Unfortunately, we don't have enough data to calculate net use or buy signals, which is neutral. Several similar ventures have faced criticism regarding the effectiveness of AI in idea validation, concerns about idea theft, and skepticism about the originality and clarity of problem-solving. Many users preferred existing tools like Google Docs or human validation. Given this landscape and the challenges faced by similar projects, tread carefully.

Recommendations

  1. Carefully analyze the negative feedback from similar products, especially regarding AI's effectiveness and concerns about idea theft. Understand why users rejected those approaches before committing to building your own platform.
  2. Consider pivoting to a related but different problem where your skills can provide a unique solution. For instance, instead of generating ideas, focus on helping founders refine and validate their existing ideas through user feedback.
  3. If you've already built some components, explore if the technology can be repurposed for a different application with better market potential. Can the core technology be adapted to solve a more pressing problem?
  4. Talk to at least three people who have tried similar products and understand their actual needs and pain points. What are they missing? What frustrates them about existing solutions?
  5. Based on the discussions from competing products, users have expressed interest in a more streamlined platform, while some express skepticism about AI's effectiveness for the service, likening it to Google Docs, and questioned its originality and clarity in solving problems. Think about building your platform around a human-driven validation process that is streamlined or automated through AI. Do not overpromise AI capabilities.
  6. Focus on solving a very specific problem. Instead of providing general idea validation, think of an idea to help founders identify the right metrics to track for their early-stage sales and marketing efforts.
  7. Instead of building out a full website, first test a simple landing page using a minimalist page builder. See if you can generate any traffic, collect emails and understand if the users are willing to pay you anything before you invest significant time and effort.
  8. Carefully choose your words and tone. The "world domination" goal was criticized as unclear and inappropriate in a similar product. Ensure that your messaging is clear, concise, and relevant to the target audience.
  9. Since customers voiced concern about the trustworthiness of customer testimonials, ensure that you address this on your page and that you get trusted feedback and testimonials.
  10. Review other products on Product Hunt that discuss the topic of market and reddit analysis. Reach out and get their opinions and feedback. There is no point in reinventing the wheel.

Questions

  1. Given the existing criticisms of AI-driven validation, how will your platform differentiate itself to provide genuinely insightful and actionable feedback?
  2. What specific problem within the startup idea validation process are you uniquely positioned to solve, and how will you measure your success in addressing it?
  3. Considering the concerns about idea theft, what concrete measures will you implement to protect user ideas and build trust within the community?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

I made a tool to help collect and validate startup ideas

Hey HN, I’m Kyrylo. I recently created a small tool that lets you gather, refine, and validate SaaS/startup ideas using AI. I used to jot down my product ideas in a note apps, but it wasn’t very practical for collecting feedback or refining them. So, I built this tool to make the process easier. Here’s how it works:1. Enter a brief description of your idea. 2. The app uses AI to generate project details. 3. Share your idea via a link that includes a feedback form. It’s pretty straightforward, and I’d love to hear your thoughts or any suggestions!

Users commented on a variety of Show HN products/services, from FuneralDash for funeral planning to WeatherBet for weather betting. Some expressed skepticism about AI and preferred human validation or existing tools like Google Docs. There were concerns about age limitations, licensing, and the effectiveness of some ideas. Innovative concepts like Antimatter warp engines and video conferencing toilets were mentioned, as well as a crowdfunding platform for political lobbying. Users also discussed the potential of IdeaCapturePro and AdPaw Hat for monetization. The landing page and Pieter Levels were praised, while some comments were sarcastic or protective of their ideas.

Users expressed skepticism about AI's effectiveness for the service, likened it to Google Docs, and questioned its originality and clarity in solving problems. Concerns about idea theft, arbitrary restrictions, and the platform's tone were noted. The 'world domination' goal was criticized as unclear and inappropriate. Users found the Q&A format unsuitable for brainstorming and were puzzled by the public nature of the platform. Criticisms also included a lack of features, differentiation, and creativity, as well as issues with idea rejection and selection criteria. The sign-up process was faulted for not saving initial ideas.

A minimalist page builder to test as many business ideas as possible

02 Feb 2023 SaaS

I built a minimalist page builder to test as many business ideas as possibleBack story:Been struggling a lot to validate business ideas. Last year, I spent four months on an entire Job board SaaS, I only got a couple of signups (early users, developers), but I couldn’t sell and make money: $0 profit, only expenses :(Decided to keep building SaaS, but with a new approach: before working on the upcoming SaaS ideas, I wanted to have an easy-and-fast way of having a coming soon page (landing page) that helps to collect early signups…I don’t know if this is going to be helpful for other founders, but I’m hoping to run this business as a side project.Would love to get some feedback,Thanks!

Great simplicity and features for landing page builders.

I made the home page for my new SaaS idea

01 Aug 2024 SaaS

Hi, I came up with this idea and am going to be launching soon and have worked on the technical feasibility of the SaaS which is essentially an idea tracker for business ideas with the ability to validate whether they would be good in the market by looking at competitors weaknesses. I have worked on this tool for a while now and have just made the MVP but it isn't launched yet. You can subscribe to the email if you want to but any thoughts on whether you would use this would be great. If you wouldn't that's fine, I just hope it is useful for someone. The idea came from my own annoyance at organising ideas for SaaS projects and am planning on adding many more features. Anyway, thanks for reading my mini manifesto. Hope you like it, Dan

StartupRoaster - Get the feedback your friends are too afraid to give

Your head is full of startup ideas that you think are perfect. But they probably suck. Put them to the test by roasting them for free before writing a single line of code.

Users found the product fun and enjoyable to play with. One user described it as a cheat for "The Mom Test." The general sentiment was positive, with users congratulating the creators on the launch. A comment was deleted, so it was ommitted from the summary.

I made a tool that generates startup ideas with AI by scanning Reddit

I’m the developer of IdeaPicker. I was struggling to find startup ideas that solve real problems. Created this tool for myself to find them with AI from Reddit. Then, made it public and free.1- It scans 150+ subreddits and finds pain points from conversations.2- AI generates a startup idea from the pain point with an estimated revenue.3- Adds the idea to the database of 25000 ideas with pain points.

IdeaPicker is a tool developed to find startup ideas from Reddit. While the project is considered neat, some users feel the title is misleading. Additionally, there are questions about the $52 million valuation for coordinate conversion.

The title of the submission is misleading and gives the wrong impression. Additionally, there are doubts about the accuracy and reliability of the valuation method used.

StartupRoasters – Brutally honest feedback to help you refine your idea

24 Sep 2023 SaaS

Hey HN, Today I'm launching StartupRoasters.com a community of people that give Brutally Honest Feedback to anything from a business idea, a Youtube video, a website...In today's internet, I feel like getting feedback to one's projects is tough because most online communities slaughter anyone who posts their own work stating that it's self-promotion and spam. That's why I built StartupRoasters.com where anyone can post their work and get feedback. You can even add a survey to your post so that people answer specific questions and make votes. The obvious issue is that everyone is just going to post their work and not care about the others. The solution I found was to implement a points system. You need 100 points to create a new post about your project and to get points, you need to review projects from others, get upvotes, comment...Thereby, everyone needs to contribute to get feedback on their own work.I hope this community will grow and be helpful to people in improving their work. Cheers, Yassine (@ybouane)

I built a 100% free startup idea generator

02 May 2024 Productivity

The comments reflect a mix of insights on startups, emphasizing the importance of people, the challenge of finding product-market fit, and the difficulty of execution over idea generation. There's skepticism about the effectiveness of startup idea generator tools, with some users questioning methods and others suggesting improvements like a problem generator tool. Positive feedback was given to concepts like HealthWealth Analytics and people-centric networking solutions. There's also mention of a humorous PlayStation 6 idea and a health app for rating poop photos, indicating a range of creative thinking.

Users criticized the Show HN product for copying ideas without success, overlooking the human aspect in business, and potentially exploiting people. There's skepticism about its effectiveness and market fit, with concerns about competition and solving non-issues. The payment system was noted as difficult, and the prioritization of people over protocols was unclear. Doubts were raised about its ability to generate profitable ideas, and it was seen as just a marketing tool. Healthcare startups were mentioned as needing more than what's offered.

Test my simple landing builder for non technical founders

24 Jul 2024 Productivity

A simple landing page builder which will support for AI generated copy. The software will support drag n drop page building similar to Wix as well as custom CSS or JavaScript. The main focus is to provide a simple/uncrowded experience only providing what people need, this is not meant to to be a WordPress competitor for example. it is meant to be a simple landing page builder for solopreneurs and other early startups. Specifically looking to speedup development and get leads. I'll try and create around 20 premade templates eg. blog, product launch, resume, freelancing and coursesThe website will be affordable (FREE-$25). What i have described above is the MVP, if it is successful i will add payment buttons for users, integrations with email platforms for autoresponders and lead capture forms.I'm not sure if this is a good idea, would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
