Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space. Our analysis shows about 29 similar products focusing on AI-powered travel planning. This indicates a significant level of competition. Engagement, measured by average comments, is low at 3, which suggests that while there's interest, users aren't deeply invested in current solutions. We didn't detect strong positive or negative signals for product use or purchase in the existing market. This could mean that the existing solutions are not fully meeting user needs, leaving an opportunity for a truly innovative offering, but also that users don't want or need this type of product. Many users have criticized existing travel planning tools for a lack of customization and inaccurate recommendations. The key is to provide a significantly differentiated experience to stand out.

Recommendations

  1. Deeply research existing AI travel planning solutions to understand why they haven't fully resonated with users. What are their shortcomings in terms of personalization, accuracy, and user experience? Focus on the unmet needs and pain points to identify opportunities for differentiation. The similar product discussions and criticism summaries highlight key areas of user dissatisfaction, which should inform your research.
  2. Instead of targeting the broad travel market, identify a specific niche or demographic group with unique travel needs. This could be solo travelers, families with young children, adventure travelers, or travelers with specific dietary requirements. Tailor your AI assistant and planning tools to address the unique challenges and preferences of this niche, offering a more personalized and relevant experience.
  3. Explore building tools or features that can be integrated into existing travel platforms or used by travel agents and tour operators. This approach allows you to leverage existing distribution channels and tap into established customer bases. Rather than directly competing with established players, you can provide value-added services that enhance their offerings.
  4. Consider focusing on a specific stage of the travel planning process. For example, instead of offering a full-fledged itinerary planner, focus on helping users find the best hotels or experiences based on their budget, preferences, and location. Alternatively, you could specialize in providing real-time travel advice and support during the trip itself. This approach allows you to narrow your focus and deliver a more specialized and valuable service.
  5. Before investing significant resources into building the full application, validate your core assumptions and features through user testing and prototyping. Create a simple MVP (Minimum Viable Product) that demonstrates the key value proposition of your AI travel assistant. Gather feedback from potential users and iterate on your design and functionality based on their input. Several similar products have been criticized for lack of UI and failing forms.
  6. Given criticisms of existing platforms, focus on building robust data validation and feedback mechanisms. Ensure that your AI is providing accurate and up-to-date information, and provide users with easy ways to report errors or suggest improvements. Actively monitor user feedback and address any issues promptly to build trust and credibility. The discussions highlight that innacurate or impractical travel plans were not well received.
  7. Explore partnerships with local businesses, travel bloggers, and influencers to promote your app and reach a wider audience. Collaborate on content creation, cross-promotional campaigns, and referral programs. Building a strong network of partners can help you establish credibility and drive user acquisition. Similar products inquired about integration of user reviews, which implies the user-base values trusted opinions.

Questions

  1. Given the low engagement with existing solutions, what specific features or functionalities can you offer that will truly captivate users and encourage them to actively use and recommend your app?
  2. Considering the concerns about inaccurate recommendations and lack of customization in similar products, how will you ensure that your AI assistant provides personalized and reliable travel advice that meets the unique needs and preferences of each user?
  3. Since many similar travel planning tools have been critized for lacking customization, have you considered features which allow users to customize the level of detail/complexity in their itinerary to match their travel style?

I Built an AI Holiday Planner for Instant, Expert-Level Itineraries

Hi HN, I'm Fran!I'm excited to share my latest project with you all. I built an AI travel planner that generates custom travel itineraries in seconds. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a month-long adventure, this tool can create a detailed, professional-level plan that includes day-by-day activities, hotels, restaurants, and more.As a frequent traveler, I wanted to create something that simplifies the overwhelming task of trip planning and ensures you make the most of your time at any destination. The AI considers various factors to provide recommendations that suit your preferences and interests.I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions. Feel free to ask any questions or share your experiences with travel planning! Thanks for checking it out, Fran

Users appreciate the landing page and free trial of the AI itinerary planner but suggest improvements such as more customization options, booking links, additional information, and fixing the call-to-action (CTA) button.

The generated itinerary lacks value and customization. Users also reported issues with the call-to-action (CTA) links leading to 404 errors, slow generation times, and a need for more autocompletion features and visual aids.

Hey Fran! Some feedback: I really liked the landing page. It got the point across well, and answered my questions while reading. Having a free trial phase made me actually want to sign up, and the five free plans actually seemed even a bit generous to someone like me who doesn’t travel too often - that’d be a long time until you see any money from me, even though I would probably be willing to pay sooner if it’s worth it.However, the CTA at the top 404-s currently, so you might want to fix that. Signup using the button on the pricing widget worked, however, and having a Google signin option was well received. While I filled out the form, a little more autocompletion would have been nice, such as for locations or airports; I wasn’t sure whether I could also add countries or city names verbatim. What I was missing was some questions on the preferred means of transport; as a European, I mostly avoid flying if possible, for example. Once completed, the actual generation took longer than I would have expected. A fancy loading animation would have been good here, something that distracts from the loading time (see e.g. https://dribbble.com/shots/4291412). The first submission didn’t take me anywhere, so I hit the button again, discovering my credit had been reduced to 3, which felt unjust. This time, however, I actually got my travel plan, and I was pleased by the way the summary picked up my interests (LLMs never stop feeling magic). The order of the sections felt a bit flipped- having a list of Italian restaurants and hotels for the destination „Italy“ felt a bit random, they made more sense after the actual day-by-day trip plan which included them in the descriptions. The timeline would very much benefit from some pictures sourced from the web; I would also suggest adding some kind of travel route visualisation which shows the route and means of transport along the sites, so you can get a feeling for the amount of driving required, where this will take you, and so on. I would also love the option to have it offer alternatives for a given suggestion; like, I’ve been to this particular restaurant and didn’t like the food, or I’d rather not go hiking three days in a row. Having some kind of ChatGPT-like option to come up with prompt modifications the generate alternative paths from any given step would be great (so I could click „request changes“, and it would ask „what would you like to change?“, and get a new suggestion for that day, with kind of pagination buttons to switch between the old and the new one). The useful links felt a bit disconnected; only having domain names wasn’t too helpful, especially Italian ones. Some kind of link unfurling would be good (see e.g. https://www.npmjs.com/package/unfurl.js/v/1.0.0). In general, a lot more options and description would have been good. Show me what I can do there, how it looks like, what alternatives I could consider, what local specialties are, where I can find good photo opportunities (not important to me, but there’s a huge Instagram crowd out there hunting for tips), how others liked the place, what I can do if it’s bad weather that day, and so on.Below the timeline, you could maybe offer some next steps - travel booking links, and so on - I haven’t put too much thought into this, but it felt a bit like being left alone at this point. I’m sure you’re going to find something. After all, I liked the whole premise, and could see myself actually using this to get a rough outline for my trip. Having a bit more information and alternatives at hand, as well as a visualisation of the route before me would be very important, but it’s all clearly sensible features. So if you pull through with it, I’m sure it’s gonna work! Congratulations on the super-clean landing page and the value proposition. I like it.

TripClub – Plan Travel with AI

Hey HN! This is Will and Riley from TripClub (https://tripclub.ai/). TripClub helps you plan and visualize your trips while giving you recommended itineraries to anywhere in the world based on your input. We began working on this when we couldn’t find a good solution to plan trips with friends, and found that most people we knew used something like google docs along with 24 tabs for researching places. Also, with the recent progress in generative AI, we found that we could now create detailed trips based on any input you’d like, and turn these into visually appealing itineraries. As you may have suspected, we primarily use openAI models for trip generation on the backend. We put the recommendations into an interactable map and itinerary. After creating a trip, you can add your friends so everyone can collaborate on editing the various places on your itinerary.Right now every aspect of the app is free and we hope to keep it that way. However we haven’t built in a source of revenue at the moment and are fully bootstrapped, so this could change (we plan to make revenue on hotel bookings in the future). We’re looking forward to hearing any of your comments, questions, and feedback!

Users provided mixed feedback on a travel app, noting an unrealistic bicycle tour itinerary and suggesting improvements in suggested times. Positive remarks include excitement about a specific bicycle tour and the ability to use the app without signing up. A bachelor party itinerary with continuous drinking was mentioned, and one user requested a demo trial without the need for sign-up, while another agreed to try with an email account.

Users criticized the product for an unrealistic itinerary, issues with trip details, and a lack of consideration for hangovers, implying an unrealistic assumption of continuous drinking. They also noted that suggested times were impractical, results were not visible, and there is a need for change. Criticisms included non-local date/time settings, insufficient information, and a lack of full responsiveness.
