Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded market with your recipe storage, inventory management, and sharing platform. With 29 similar products already out there, it's going to be an uphill battle to stand out. The overall engagement in this space is low, with an average of only 2 comments per product. This suggests that while people are launching these tools, not many people are actively using or discussing them. The IDEA CATEGORY is called 'Swamp' and you should not build it.

Recommendations

  1. Before you invest further, take a hard look at why existing recipe and inventory management solutions haven't captured significant user engagement. What are they missing? What problems do users still have that aren't being solved?
  2. If you decide to proceed, identify a specific niche within the broader cooking community that you can serve exceptionally well. This could be people with specific dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free), those focused on reducing food waste, or families with young children. Specialization is key to finding an underserved audience.
  3. Instead of building a standalone platform, explore creating tools or integrations that enhance existing recipe management or grocery shopping services. For example, you could develop an AI-powered recipe suggestion tool for Notion, that matches the user's fridge content (like OneClick Recipe did).
  4. Based on the similar product discussions, consider features like AI recipe generation based on available ingredients (like Fridgeraider and Kitchenese), grocery integration, dietary filters, sharing capabilities, and detailed nutrition information. Also make sure quantities and cup sizes are included in the recipes.
  5. Look into the issues encountered by similar products, such as bugs, errors with input validation (spaces in names), and inaccurate recipe information (Everyday Chef). Ensuring a stable and reliable user experience is crucial.
  6. Before launch, have a solid plan for addressing issues quickly and iterating based on user feedback (Pantry AId). Continual updates and improvements are necessary to maintain user interest.
  7. Explore adjacent problems in the food space that might be more promising, such as meal planning, automated grocery ordering, or personalized nutrition recommendations.
  8. Honestly evaluate if this is the best use of your time and resources. There might be better opportunities out there that align more closely with market demand.

Questions

  1. Given the existing solutions, what is the one killer feature that will make your platform irresistible to users and create a loyal community?
  2. How will you ensure the accuracy and reliability of user-generated recipes and inventory data, and what measures will you take to prevent errors or misinformation?
  3. What is your plan for long-term monetization and sustainability in a market where users are hesitant to pay for recipe and inventory management tools?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

A recipe manager for saving recipes from social media URLs or any text

15 Feb 2024 Cooking Food & Drink

If you like to save recipes you might have had issues with managing recipes from several sources: not being able to search through them, missing features in some of them like ingredient scaling, or just a bad interface. This is especially the case for recipes from Instagram, which can be a great place to discover them but is not “cooking-friendly”.With our web app you can create a recipe from an instagram post and save it in a format that can be searched by recipe title or ingredients. We launched it barely over a month ago to a small group and have since also added an explore feature to make adding your first recipes even easier and an AI assistant that generates recipes based on your prompt. Recipes you create can be public or private. You can check out already published recipes and save them without making an account, but to create new ones you’ll need to log in. If you don’t want to make an account one you can use this log in to try it out:showhn@pomeloapp.ioshowhnLet me know what you think?

Everyday Chef and Recipe Platform

30 Oct 2024 Cooking

All of my friends wanted my mom's recipes when they came round for my birthday. Now I realised she doesn't store anything - it's all in her head! Then the same thing happened with my friend although she writes hers down in a diary (how old school). And then I noticed so many food influencers posting their recipes in the descriptions of their tiktok/insta posts. And then as I started searching for recipes online, I found the websites full of ads and popups and terrible UI. I only cared about the ingredients and the method. So I created this, and have been having a lot of fun with it.I hope to see up and coming food influencers using this as a platform directly to link with their social media posts, engaging and competing with an already interested audience.Technical talk: Building a fullstack application so quickly and being able to publish all single handedly was a fantastic experience. The SEO is fantastic! My site ranks 1st on Google for related searches.Edit: There are some links in the footer that may not lead anywhere. These are under construction.

Users reported several issues with the service, including a bug in the 'report a bug' link, 500 errors when using spaces in usernames or recipe names, and various errors in the explore section such as bad recipe displays and incorrect Thai dish information. One user mentioned that using the service helped them practice their testing skills, which they found beneficial.

Users reported several issues: the link provided does not work, there is a 500 error when spaces are used as input, and there are multiple errors in the explore feature including bad recipe displays and incorrect information for Thai dishes.

I made a recipe manager, import recipes by URL and get rid of the ads

01 May 2024 Productivity

Dealing with hundreds of recipe bookmarks was becoming impossible, needed a way to save them and organize them.So I made a recipe manager, with the main goal of being simple to use and navigate. And it should look good on any device I happen to be using in the kitchen: phone, tablet.Regarding pricing, I see it being free for most basic features, and having a Premium plan for more advanced features (like importing recipes from pictures or videos). Which means Premium would always be completely optional, not forced. Hopefully just £2.90 per month. But until there are more features, it's totally free.

Collaborative recipe manager for iOS, built with SwiftUI and Firebase

25 May 2023 Productivity

I initially created Umami for my family. We'd been using a giant google sheet of recipes that my wife made (one recipe per tab plus a table of contents at the front), but the UX of that left much to be desired, especially on mobile. We also tried a bunch of other recipe apps like Paprika, Whisk, Mela, etc., but most of them don't let you create a shared collection of recipes without using the same login credentials, which we didn't want to share with extended family members.Anyways, I've steadily been working on Umami as a solo side project for about 3 years. At first, just my family and a few friends were using it, but now it's starting to get downloaded by other people. I'd love to get feedback here on what kinds of features would be helpful to y'all. Also happy to answer any questions about the tech stack. Thanks friends!

Intelligent Recipe and Meal Tracking Tool

08 Dec 2023 Cooking Productivity

I started building this tool for personal use about a year ago, but eventually decided to flesh it out and put it up for public use.My partner and I frequently adjust recipes to our taste, then forget what we did by the next time we make them. This tool aims to solve that by storing a canonical version of your recipes that automatically updates according to the notes you write. If you like to cook and fine-tune your recipes over time, check it out and let me know what you think!

Aggregate recipes and make shopping lists, is it useful though?

28 May 2024 Cooking

I built a small app where you can pull recipes from your favourite websites and generate an interactive shopping to then buy the ingredients to make them. You can give it a try for free, no payment details required. This idea will hardly set the world alight but it scratched an itch for me and wanted to blow the cobwebs off of shipping a product, so I thought I would throw something together quickly and would love any feedback on it if possible! This idea came about from- my lack of cooking skills requiring me to reference recipes I’ve already made before- having to go on a deep dive through WhatsApp to find the recipes that had been sent to me- writing the aggregated shopping list for multiple recipes took way too long- alot of recipe websites not getting to the cooking steps quick enoughI have had issues getting the AI model to scrape the websites correctly. I had to add the ability of users to copy & paste steps and ingredients into the form to improve accuracy. If anyone has any tips on improving the accuracy of models (using Open AI Assistants), that would be great! Thanks for your time if you check it out, it is very much appreciated!I'm also on X if you want to discuss there!https://x.com/jaackevans_
