Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Your idea for a motivational Bible passage app based on mood falls into a crowded space, which we call the 'Swamp'. We found 8 similar products already, indicating a high level of competition. Most of these apps have faced challenges in gaining significant traction, as evidenced by the low engagement (average of just 1 comment per app). While the underlying sentiment is positive, and users feel that these solutions are needed, it's critical to recognize that a 'me-too' app will likely struggle. Without a really differentiated approach, this idea may not be the best use of your time, since it might be hard to stand out or make money.

Recommendations

  1. Begin by deeply researching the existing solutions in the market, specifically focusing on understanding why they haven't achieved widespread success. Understanding the shortcomings of apps like 'InSpirit', 'Reborn', and 'ScriptureChat' will provide crucial insights.
  2. If you remain committed to this idea, identify a very specific niche within the Christian community that is currently underserved by existing apps. What specific demographics, needs, or spiritual practices are not being adequately addressed?
  3. Consider pivoting your strategy to develop tools or services that could be integrated into existing faith-based platforms or apps. Instead of direct competition, explore how you can enhance the value proposition of established players.
  4. Explore adjacent problem spaces within the realm of faith and spirituality that might offer more promising opportunities for innovation. Are there unmet needs related to community building, spiritual growth, or religious education that could be addressed through a different type of app?
  5. Given the competitive landscape, it may be wise to re-evaluate your priorities and dedicate your efforts to a different, more promising entrepreneurial endeavor. Is there another problem you could solve that has less competition?
  6. Based on the feedback of similar apps, think about expanding the apps function into meditation, as suggested by one of the user from the app 'Reborn'. This can increase the potential users.

Questions

  1. What unique value proposition can your app offer that isn't already present in the existing market of motivational and religious apps?
  2. How can you leverage community engagement and user feedback to create a truly personalized and meaningful experience for your app users, surpassing what similar apps currently provide?
  3. What are some alternative revenue models, beyond simple in-app purchases or subscriptions, that could be implemented to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of your app?

Ascent, a Christian habits tracker for Lent

10 Feb 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey HN! This is my first iOS app. I built it because I was curious about SwiftUI and wanted to learn by doing.Since Lent is around the corner, I thought I'd share it with you.It has also been hunted on PH today: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/ascentI relied heavily on ChatGPT to build it, and honestly it was quite frustrating at times. The best part of building the app was to do it in public, as I shared regular updates on X and ended up having amazing conversations.

Nice.
