Hiring Career

A way for job applicants to figure out their skills, check whether ...

...they meet the requirements for a job they want to apply for and maybe a directory that can be linked to and allows them to know if an employer uses ATS and other tools to filter out resumes.

Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space with your idea for a job application skills analyzer and ATS checker. The "Swamp" category fits because there are already many similar tools available, as evidenced by the 22 matching products we found. Unfortunately, the average engagement for similar products is low. This suggests that existing solutions might not be fully addressing user needs or are failing to capture sustained interest. Because of the high competition and relatively low engagement in this niche, succeeding will require a significantly differentiated approach or a focus on a very specific, underserved segment of the job applicant market.

Recommendations

  1. First, deeply investigate why existing resume and ATS tools haven't fully satisfied users. Look at the criticism from similar products, and pay attention to how users dislike that AI tools can worsen the hiring process, and how much users hate manual data entry. Identify gaps in the current market offerings and unmet needs among job seekers.
  2. Instead of directly competing with established players, consider focusing on a niche within the job application process. For example, tailor your tool to a specific industry, job level (entry-level, executive), or applicant demographic (e.g., veterans, career changers). This will allow you to offer more targeted and valuable assistance.
  3. Explore opportunities to integrate with existing ATS platforms or job boards rather than creating a standalone tool. By providing value to these platforms, you can tap into their existing user base and avoid the challenge of building a user base from scratch. Consider creating plugins or extensions that enhance the functionality of popular ATS systems.
  4. Given the user concerns around data security on similar products, develop a clear and transparent data security policy. Clearly communicate how applicant data is handled, stored, and protected. Addressing these concerns proactively can build trust and differentiate you from competitors.
  5. Before investing heavily in development, validate your idea with your target audience. Conduct user interviews, run surveys, and create prototypes to gather feedback on your proposed features and functionality. Iterate based on user feedback to ensure you're building a product that meets their needs and solves their pain points.

Questions

  1. What specific underserved group within the job applicant market will your tool target, and what unique value proposition will resonate with them?
  2. How will you differentiate your tool from existing solutions to avoid becoming just another mediocre offering in a crowded market?
  3. What is your go-to-market strategy to reach your target audience and acquire initial users, considering the low engagement observed in similar products?

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

I Made an AI Resume Maker That Turns Any Job Link into Tailored Resumes

Hey HN, I am a solopreneur building AI SaaS and mini tools.I recently built ResumeSet, an AI resume builder that creates tailored resumes based on job descriptions from any job link.Job hunting can feel like a full-time job itself, especially with the growing reliance on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that automatically filter out resumes. I wanted to help job seekers create resumes more likely to pass ATS checks without endless manual tweaking. How it works: - Paste the job link, and ResumeSet's AI analyzes the job requirements to tailor your resume to match the job's key requirements and skills. - The result? A resume that is ATS (Applicant Tracking System) friendly and increases the likelihood of passing automated screenings. - PDF export feature for easy downloads and integrations into existing job platforms. - No fancy templates, just functional and ATS-friendly formatting. Why I built this: I noticed how time-consuming and frustrating it is to repeatedly tweak resumes for every job application, especially when fighting against rigid ATS systems. I wanted to automate this process and make job hunting more efficient by focusing on what matters—tailoring resumes specifically to each role.ResumeSet helps users avoid the generic, one-size-fits-all resumes that often get rejected. I see how often good candidates are missed due to poorly optimized resumes. My goal was to make a simple but effective tool that bridges that gap.Tech Stack: - Built with Django and OpenAI API for the core AI functionality. - Frontend is a simple Bootstrap for a responsive design.I'd love to get feedback from the community. Thoughts on improving it or potential features? You can try it for free here: https://resumeset.com.Looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

Users express concerns about AI tools in hiring, noting they can worsen the process by clogging pipelines and harming genuine applicants. There's a call for an AI-powered application checker and criticism of ATS systems. Suggestions include adopting jsonresume format for easier data import and improving job application strategies. Positive feedback includes praise for the invention and interest in filtering irrelevant job history. Technical issues reported include a broken UI on Firefox. Two comments were noted as dead.

Users criticize the product for exacerbating hiring issues, with AI tools causing false positives and harming job seekers. There's no redress for rejections. The job application strategy is deemed terrible, with excessive manual data entry, disliked resume retyping, and lengthy profile detail filling. Additionally, the UI is reported to be broken on Firefox.
