Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space with your job tracker, AI resume/cover letter generator, and Chrome extension. We found 15 similar products, which means there's high competition. User engagement is low across these similar products, with an average of only 2 comments per launch. Because of this high competition and low engagement you're going to need to find a way to drastically differentiate yourself from existing solutions which users are clearly not engaging with in a meaningful way. Many have tried to solve this problem and user criticism revolves around AI-powered applications, issues with ATS systems and data privacy.

Recommendations

  1. Given the crowded market, thoroughly research why existing job application tools haven't fully satisfied users. Dive deep into user reviews and identify pain points that current solutions are missing. Look into the criticisms related to the similar products and make sure to address these in your approach. Don't just replicate existing features.
  2. Instead of targeting all job seekers, identify a specific niche with unique needs. For example, focus on a particular industry, experience level, or those with specific career gaps. Tailoring your features and marketing to a smaller audience will help you stand out.
  3. Before building a standalone product, explore creating tools or integrations for existing job platforms or applicant tracking systems (ATS). This could be a faster way to gain traction and provide value without directly competing with established players.
  4. Based on the similar product discussions, users are concerned about data privacy and the potential for AI to worsen the job application process. Clearly communicate your data privacy policies and how your AI enhances, rather than hinders, the application process. Consider features that address these concerns directly, such as anonymizing data or providing explanations for AI-driven suggestions.
  5. Focus on a specific problem within the job search process, such as ATS compatibility, resume formatting, or cover letter generation. By excelling in one area, you can attract users seeking a specialized solution. Given user criticism about ATS systems, consider focusing on helping candidates navigate these systems effectively.
  6. Instead of a generic AI resume builder, tailor the AI to analyze job descriptions and highlight relevant skills. This could save users time and improve their chances of getting noticed. Also make sure to offer users control over the final output, addressing concerns about generic AI-generated content.
  7. Given users' concerns about the time and effort required for manual data entry, prioritize seamless integration with job boards and LinkedIn. Automate data import and reduce the need for users to retype information. This will improve user experience and increase adoption.
  8. Consider pivoting to an adjacent problem, such as interview preparation, salary negotiation, or career coaching. These areas may have less competition and a stronger demand for personalized solutions.
  9. If the idea still feels too risky, consider putting it on hold and focusing on other opportunities. Sometimes the best decision is to save your resources for a more promising venture. Don't be afraid to cut your losses and move on to something else.

Questions

  1. Given the negative sentiment towards AI-driven job applications, how will your product ensure it enhances the process rather than clogging pipelines and harming genuine applicants?
  2. Considering the challenges posed by ATS systems, what specific features will your job tracker offer to help candidates bypass filters and get noticed?
  3. How will you address user concerns about data privacy and ensure that your product doesn't exploit user data for profit?

I Made an AI Resume Maker That Turns Any Job Link into Tailored Resumes

Hey HN, I am a solopreneur building AI SaaS and mini tools.I recently built ResumeSet, an AI resume builder that creates tailored resumes based on job descriptions from any job link.Job hunting can feel like a full-time job itself, especially with the growing reliance on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that automatically filter out resumes. I wanted to help job seekers create resumes more likely to pass ATS checks without endless manual tweaking. How it works: - Paste the job link, and ResumeSet's AI analyzes the job requirements to tailor your resume to match the job's key requirements and skills. - The result? A resume that is ATS (Applicant Tracking System) friendly and increases the likelihood of passing automated screenings. - PDF export feature for easy downloads and integrations into existing job platforms. - No fancy templates, just functional and ATS-friendly formatting. Why I built this: I noticed how time-consuming and frustrating it is to repeatedly tweak resumes for every job application, especially when fighting against rigid ATS systems. I wanted to automate this process and make job hunting more efficient by focusing on what matters—tailoring resumes specifically to each role.ResumeSet helps users avoid the generic, one-size-fits-all resumes that often get rejected. I see how often good candidates are missed due to poorly optimized resumes. My goal was to make a simple but effective tool that bridges that gap.Tech Stack: - Built with Django and OpenAI API for the core AI functionality. - Frontend is a simple Bootstrap for a responsive design.I'd love to get feedback from the community. Thoughts on improving it or potential features? You can try it for free here: https://resumeset.com.Looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

Users express concerns about AI tools in hiring, noting they can worsen the process by clogging pipelines and harming genuine applicants. There's a call for an AI-powered application checker and criticism of ATS systems. Suggestions include adopting jsonresume format for easier data import and improving job application strategies. Positive feedback includes praise for the invention and interest in filtering irrelevant job history. Technical issues reported include a broken UI on Firefox. Two comments were noted as dead.

Users criticize the product for exacerbating hiring issues, with AI tools causing false positives and harming job seekers. There's no redress for rejections. The job application strategy is deemed terrible, with excessive manual data entry, disliked resume retyping, and lengthy profile detail filling. Additionally, the UI is reported to be broken on Firefox.

I built a Chrome extension to auto-apply to jobs

I was laid of from a YC company last November and during my job search I got this idea to build an extension that would help me apply to jobs a lot faster. 2 months later, InstaApply was born. The extension really makes applying to jobs super easy. Usually, it takes applying to dozens of jobs to land something and requires filling out the same data over and over again. Which is pretty annoying. This is where InstaApply comes in, it automates all the boring parts of applying to jobs with Ai, condensing the process to just seconds.InstaApply will fill out all the form fields, tailor your cover letter and your resume, all in a flash. How it works: We ask some information from users, analyze their resumes and feed this data to our Ai (along with job description) which intelligently fills out answers with accuracy. Even things like "why work for our company", "what project are you most proud of", location preferences etc.My aim is to help job seekers focus on their skills and interviewing while we take care of the monotonous tasks.

Users suggest that experienced job seekers should focus on targeted applications rather than sending out numerous resumes. Additionally, they highlight that Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) pose a significant challenge in the job application process.

Critics argue that shotgunning resumes is viewed negatively by experienced candidates and that ATS systems filter out most applications, making it difficult for candidates to get noticed.

AI tool to tailor resume and cover letter, and prepare for interviews

06 Nov 2023 Hiring Career

Hi HN Community! I'd really appreciate your feedback on my new web app for job seekers. What it can do:1. Help you optimize your resume for a specific job description.2. Write a personalized cover letter.3. Identify most likely interview questions for the role and provide real-time feedback during mock interviews. The backend is written in Python (Flask). It relies on an internal database and multiple external APIs (incl. ChatGPT). The frontend is HTML/CSS/JavaScript.I'm very curious: What do you like and dislike the most about it? Did you experience any weird issues as you were playing around with it? And what would you suggest to improve? Thanks!

A GPT-driven tool for analyzing & tracking your resumes & job postings

Jobs-Scout is an AI (OpenAI's GPT) driven job tracking tool that can parse job postings and analyze your resumes against them. The AI recommends qualifications, accomplishments and keywords that can improve your chances in matching the job posting. As you add job postings to the tool, it allows you to set status, notes and track resumes used and be better organized as well.I'm keeping it free hoping it will be helpful to some of the new job seekers out there. All I ask for is any feedback that could improve it.PS. an email is needed to login. For Beta, you can use a fake email, but I may clean-up unverified users later. I promise that email goes nowhere other than for authentication.

The comments include a mention of demo login credentials being provided and a query regarding the privacy policy.

Users are concerned about being the product, indicating worries about privacy and data usage.

I built my first project to automate job applications with AI

Hi HN, I'm currently finishing my grad degree and I've been trying to get a job. I noticed that filing out job applications is rather boring and takes a lot of my time for just a few applications. So, me and my friend created a Chrome Extension to automate that process. It takes your CV and, using LLMs, fills out the information in job application so you can just sit back and let the extension do the work. Let me know what you guys think of it. Any feedback is welcome!

Extension works for LinkedIn, Indeed; seeks feedback for improvement.
